JamesSavik Posted May 12, 2011 Posted May 12, 2011 A law was passed in the 70s that banned tobacco advertising on TV. Back in the day tobacco advertising was everywhere. They even sponsored little league teams. When the ban went into place, it hurt the television networks and charities particularly hard. It was hard to find new sponsors with deep pockets. Just goes to show that no good deed goes unpunished.
Tommy_B Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 OMG can you just imagine SpongeBob smoking cigarettes! Or Ryan Seacrest and the judges on American Idol in a smoke filled theater!
Former Member Posted May 13, 2011 Posted May 13, 2011 OMG can you just imagine SpongeBob smoking cigarettes! Or Ryan Seacrest and the judges on American Idol in a smoke filled theater! That would surely bring some spice back in to reality tv. I'm sure Simon Cowell wouldn't mind. He smokes more than 30 a day, so I've heard.

rustle Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 But I guess it is. I promise you it's real. I saw this commercial aired in prime time during the first run of The Flintstones. Mad Men didn't come out of a vacuum.
Tipdin Posted May 14, 2011 Posted May 14, 2011 Oh gosh, I remember lots of TV commercials for smoking. I had a crush on the Marlboro cowboy - he was nummy!
