    Chapter 25

I worked with a woman who had been posted to the oil fields in Venezuela for a couple of years. After rotating Stateside, she eventually developed a severe recurring fever that left her debilitated for months on end, Doctor after doctor, test after test, no resolution. Eventually she ended up at a practice with a new physician who had trained in Cuba. He listened to her symptoms, thought for a bit, and asked if she had traveled in tropical Latin America. When he heard the connection to Venezuela, he responded, "Oh, yeah, you have..." and named some tropical disease that I have forgotten. Cleared it up in a few months.

    Chapter 24

That the crux of my struggle with writing this story. I know that discretion and secrecy are necessary, but my 21st century sensibility creeps in, and I inadvertantly give in to my need to provide Jamie with a confidant. I can only hope that Mr. Turner will keep our secret.

    Chapter 15

This isn't explicit in the text, so a reader is free to interpret Adams' motives ad lib. It is probably spelled out in the letter that Jamie Blake hand delivered, something along the lines of, "this young man is bright, trustworthy and courageous. He can learn much from you, but once you find out he is 'one of us', you may be tempted to boink him, but please don't fuck with his heart the way you did with mine." Something about Adams' honesty in that letter terrified Pitt.

    Chapter 19

Every hero needs a good villain. I recently read that of the 20 or more novels in the Sharpe series, only 4 or 5 featured Sgt, Obadiah Hakeswill as the antagonist, a fact that Bernard Cornwell lamented for years as he struggled to create an equally depraved foil.

    Chapter 20

As much as any conflict of the last century, that one stripped away the last vestiges of war as a glorious institution.

    Chapter 21

Maybe this is an easy sortie that even that sot can't turn into a clusterfuck?

    Chapter 23

I think that Jamie remembers that Vane is so well connected that he couldn't be disciplined for ineffectual leadership after the Belle Therese fight. His patron in the Admiralty would see the official ship's log from the incident at the ruins of the sugar mill and perhaps look for a scapegoat. Jamie was vulnerable to a rumor campaign as much as any actual charge of wrong doing.
  9. The Forms Are Observed Noon Watch on the Quarterdeck The sun hung high, casting sharp shadows across the deck of HMS Absolute. Awnings stretched taut over the quarterdeck to blunt the worst of the heat, but the air beneath still clung thick and close, tinged with canvas and tar, tempered by the slight breath of wind off the sea. A long table, usually reserved for charting or inspections, had been positioned beneath the awning and flanked with chairs. Captain Huxley sat at t

  11. Beware this immortality you crave, young William. It is a state that many regard a curse. Welp, that's the story of my life summed up in one warning. Great story so far.

The conversation during Drew and Jimmy's walk is beautiful writing.

    A Vile Act.

"Scared of what? Jude?" he sneered. "He's not a monster. He's just... a bully. But you... you're worse. You're part of it." Interesting perspective. The narrator certainly didn't enjoy his part in the experience, so I look forward to seeing how this plays out.
  16. Interesting development. Lots of options on where this one could go.

    The Project.

That took a turn! You did warn us in the synopsis,
  18. A story with a lot of disappointment for the narrator as he learns some bitter lessons about the people around him, but none for the readers who can savor this well-written piece. Highly recommended.

Yeah, I don't see Granger as susceptible to the same repression and caution that plague Pitt. He might have had both Pitt and Blake by now!

  23. The Line Holds, Just Officers’ Wardroom, Early Evening The lamps in the officers’ wardroom cast an amber glow across the polished wood and brass. The table had been cleared of charts and cups. What remained was silence, broken only by the occasional groan of the timbers and the faint creak of a distant block swinging in the breeze. Captain Huxley sat at the head of the table. He had not changed his coat. He had not removed his gloves. His expression like a man weig
