"What's so funny guys?" Charlie had one eyebrow raised as he looked at the pair on the couch who were still snickering. A smile snuck across his face as he looked at the teenage boys snickering on the couch. It was good to see them laughing. "Dane's a bitch." Tap gasped out, trying to stop laughing. "Hey!" Dane threw his spoon at Tap. "Hey yourself! Don't get soup stains on the new furniture. What are you, some type of heathen?" Tap put the spoon in his bowl and picked up the other d

Dane woke up feeling good on Wednesday morning, even with the pain in his body. Mrs. E hadn’t been able to stop by but she had called letting him know the judge agreed and Dane was now a legally emancipated adult. A call that morning from Mr. Echels let them know he had contacted the building manager and set up a ground floor apartment for Dane downtown. Dr. Wickels announced that Laurelai was pleased with the progress Dane had made with his mobility and he was being released. Thursday was going

When Dane woke up Tap was waiting in his room with a sunny smile and a muffin in a paper bag sitting on the bedside table. "Hey sleepyhead. Finally decided to join the land of the living?" Dane nodded, grimacing when he took a drink of the warm water in his cup. Tap got up and refilled his cup with some cold water. Dane took a sip and cleared his throat, washing away the last bit of scratchiness leftover from his crying jag earlier. He didn't want to talk about that so he gave a simple yeah

Alan Kendricks sat slumped in his armchair in his living room, empty beer bottles lying around him. The air in the house was stale, the stale tang of hops overcoming the smell of burned microwave food. It was 11 pm and the news was on though he wasn't paying attention to it at all. Normally he would have been in bed at this hour but it's not like he had work the next day. That had been a fun interview when he got out of jail. He had gone home, cleaned up fully in the privacy of his own bathr

Dane's head fell back against the thin flat pillow that lay on the mattress behind him. It was a good thing his bed was inclined so that he could sit up; he was so shocked that he would have fallen backwards had it not been right there. Dane’s mouth was wide open as he watched Tap gently lick his lower lip and lazily open his eyes. Tap sensually sucked in his bottom lip for a moment as he stared. It looked almost as if he was savoring the taste of some succulent fruit before smiling languidly at

Dane was lying in his bed anxiously pleating the sheet as he thought about what Neri had said. He had really jumped to conclusions when he lost his temper. It had been a good day and he really appreciated Tap spending his spare time in the hospital visiting him, because face it, it was boring. Dane kept falling asleep but each time he woke up Tap would just smile at him and they'd talk some more. But all day Dane had been waiting for Tap to bring up the whole gay thing. He had figured he'd h

The next day Tap came into Dane's room quietly but Dane was already awake, watching the news on the small TV on the wall. "Hey buddy!" Tap said, grinning at Dane, "bright eyed and bushy tailed this morning I see." Dane just looked at Tap, not understanding what he meant. Tap burst into his great big booming laugh and while Dane didn't get what was so funny he couldn't resist that sound, giving Tap a big smile which in turn gave Tap a warm glow. "I'll have to see if I can find a mirror, hold

Tap waited restlessly while Dane was in surgery. He wheeled over to the cafeteria and grabbed a sandwich and juice then wandered up and down the sterile white halls. The staff smiled at him but he didn't stop to speak to anyone, moving was the only thing he could do. Finally after his fifth lap around the hospital Veronica stopped him, ordering him to go park it. He knew better than to argue so he was sitting in Dane's room watching daytime TV when Dane was wheeled back in from the recovery room

“Let me get you some water,” .Tap offered, “you sound awful.” “Please,” Dane managed to squeeze out between fits. Tap picked up the small cup on the bedside table and filled it from the plastic pitcher, angling the straw to make it easier for him as he lay reclined in the bed. He held it Dane's mouth, letting him take small sips. “Thanks.” Dane said his voice a little smoother. “Dane, what happened? Tap asked, his expression hurt now that his fear had been reduced, “you said you

“Young man?” Tap wasn't ignoring the men who came in the room, as he stayed fixated on Dane’s face. He was just hoping that Dane would open his eyes before he had to go, hoped that he would get to see his friend was going to be okay. “Yes sir?” Tap said respectfully, finally turning his head to look at the 2 deputies that had followed Dr. Wickels in to Dane's room. One was clearly the older and more experienced officer. His partner didn't seem like a rookie but there was a distinct gap in th

Tap was sitting on a gurney; still in his bloodstained clothes at the small hospital in town when his parents walked in. “Mom!” Tap wailed, holding out his arms. His mom rushed over to him and pulled his head down to her shoulder. She rubbed and patted Tap's back, making quiet shushing noises as he sobbed noisily. “He was hurt so bad, Mom. He was lying there so still and there was blood everywhere, so much blood.” Tap's dad stood on the other side of the gurney and put his hand silently on h

When things go wrong what would you do to get away? Dane tries to escape by running but something stops him. Is there a better way?

Dane skipped 5th period and Tap took him out to his car. It was behind the gym, where he normally parked so it wasn't likely that Dane would get caught skipping. If anyone saw them it would be Coach Mickeen and Tap knew he wouldn't say anything. They talked, Dane spilling about his life, before and after his mom got sick. Tap rubbed his knee but Dane ignored the little jolt that gave him. He had a friend, a good friend, and he wasn't going to ruin that by bringing up his 'sexual orientation'.

Monday morning didn't dawn bright and clear like the weekend, it came with dark clouds and a muted hush that held a silent air of expectancy. It was as if the world held its breath, waiting to breathe out in some violent outburst that would tear the leaves from the trees and send all the animals scurrying into their dens and burrows to hide from the fury of Mother Nature. Dane often felt a similar tension so the sensation as he woke was oddly comforting to him, almost as if he was in sync with e

“Dane,” Tap reached out and touched his upper arm gently. “Really?” His voice was serious and soft but his face spoke his skepticism loud and clear, though he said nothing more than that. Dane didn't answer and he didn't need to. His face was twisted in a look that somehow combined impotent fury and humiliation. Dane shrugged then and looked down, taking a deep breath. “Of course,” Dane's face set in stubborn lines, his jaw line firming as his full lips folded together in blatant refusal to

'Why bother' was the phrase on his mind when he woke up the next morning. Why bother getting up or going to school? The only person who had ever cared where he was or what he did was gone now anyhow. His dad only cared when he wanted an excuse to beat him, not that he ever really needed one though. He lay there on his narrow bed and watched the light slowly brighten on the wall opposite the window. He jumped when pounding on the door startled him, making him shove a hand over his mouth to muffle

Dane ran. He knew he couldn't outrun this but if all he thought of was the pound of his feet on the ground and the hitching gasp of his breath he might keep himself from screaming. The urge to do that was strong, almost overwhelming his fragile control. Dane redoubled his efforts, not feeling the scorching heat or the bright sun beating down on his lowered head as he fled. He watched the ground in front of his feet, refusing to look up or around. So when he bounced off whatever it was he ran int

I lay in my bed, shivering under the covers. I couldn't make a noise, couldn't stop the darkness when it came to smother me. I lay gasping over and over trying to get enough air in my lungs to release a scream. There was nothing to see, nothing to hear, but I could feel. The fear, sharp and acrid, was punctuated by a flash of blinding pain. I managed to sit up and scream when then, trembling violently as I huddled against the wall in the darkness. My father rushed into my room and flicked on t

The next day brought little change to Natham's condition. He was still heavily medicated but had stopped hissing at the staff and let them touch him in order to help him without being sedated. I sat with him for a few hours. He kept waking up when I shifted but after a quick check to make sure I was still there, he would knead my hand caught between his, purring as he drifted back to sleep. His trust and gentleness with me was astounding. His distress when I had to leave upset me. I had the nu

Every day that week I threw myself into my training. But no matter how hard I worked the nightmares continued to grow. I couldn’t see or hear anything in the dreams but now all they were was pain. Constantly punishing, never-ending pain was pierced by moments of agony so intense that it stopped my breath. Worse, the emotions were consuming me, terror, resignation, and hatred surged inside me. I felt those emotions after my father's death of course but these were so intense, so vividly real they

The next few days were a rollercoaster of emotions. It was by turns stressful and blissful. Being with Natham was a joy, the connection that we felt that let us talk comfortably for hours the one time we met before was still there. I couldn’t believe I hadn’t realized it was the bond mates feel when they meet but cross-species mating was just something he hadn’t heard of before. We talked about just about anything they could think of but by unspoken agreement, recent events went unmentioned. I t

"You called for me, Velaku?" Mishtar was a strong warrior, his form slim like all bird Carthera but with long, lean muscles cording his body and magnificent black and brown wings held proudly behind him. He was the epitome of our warriors, a Carthera most worthy of respect. He had risen through the ranks quickly after he mated and became the leader for the Falcons at just twenty six, younger than any before him. I had always looked up to him as the Falcon I wanted to be. Today, he was dressed

The humans were guarded by a single Falcon in a corner of the office. The Carthera had been dumped on the floor in front of my father's desk where I sat with an awful pit of some emotion I couldn’t name burning in my stomach. Roused by a sharp kick to his ribs, he opened swollen eyes that darted around the room before he drew himself up into a ball to protect his vulnerable midsection. He writhed and hissed his anger when the two Falcon lieutenants grabbed him from the ground and suspended him b

I jerked in my chains as I woke suddenly to cold water being flung over me. I shook my wet hair from my eyes and glared at the men who entered my cell. It was the cat from before of course, and another lackey of Natham’s father, one I recognized as the creature who had been driving the van. What surprised me was that he was human. Then I noticed his stance and his posture, ramrod straight with his thumbs hooked into his belt. It was the service style revolver tucked into a hip holster that cli

I had no way to tell how long I had been out or where we were when I woke up. My mouth tasted awful, a bitter metallic flavor coated my tongue and my head was pounding. My hands were completely encased in cotton and seemed to be fastened together behind my back. My wings ached where I was laying on them and the cuts on my face throbbed. I tried to stay still to hear something from our captors that might give me some idea of where we were but I grunted when we went around a corner and my weight s
