This morning I woke up to a really sad email telling me that someone I met online years ago passed away. He'd been given a diagnosis of 6 months to live not long ago, but I guess sometimes the doctors are wrong. Anyway, I've tried hard to separate the online friends I have from the friends I have irl, but it doesn't always work that way. I still find myself wondering and worrying and hurting for others, even though I've never met some of them face to face.
I have exactly one friend that I've met online that I've maintained a solid, emotional attachment to. Others have gotten to know me and decided for one reason or another that I wasn't worth it. There are some who I've held at arms length, too. Mainly as a defense mechanism, I think.
But no matter who's ever disappointed me, or who I've had a falling out with, there's one friend that I have who I've always gone back to. He never hit on me or asked me for my number. He didn't ask me if I have any nude pics, and he didn't get impatient with me when I was wrong about something and wouldn't admit it. He remembers my birthday, Thanksgiving, Christmas and other times. He sends me e-cards randomly just to say hi.
And he's the one that had to sit down at his pc this morning and pass the news along to me. I feel horrible that I know he's hurting and that I can't do anything to numb his pain. I'll go on with my day today, bitching and moaning that I have to work in this cold weather and that I have to go shopping later on. I'll stop what I'm doing at some point to blow some hot breath on my fingers and curse about it, but my life will go on. So will my friend's life, but it's going to be harder for him. He's endured so much in his life, and sometimes I don't think he understands what his purpose is on this planet.
But I know one thing that's true. No matter what, if we ever do or ever don't meet irl, I know that my life will always be better for having met him and for being able to call him my friend.

Well good news if your one of my readers... I'm working on the last chapter of If By Chance and I have assembled a small group of beta readers for my next online story. I've been working on something that's not for the internet, but I haven't shown it to anyone yet because it's not going to be for public consumption. I hate to waste my editor's time on something that isn't going online and that I don't actually have a plan for yet. I highly doubt that this story's going to have a gay theme to it, but we'll see what my fingers decide.
Oh yeah, and I'm really pissed off that the FAUX network decided to run some lame ass 24 movie in lieu of The Simpsons, King of the Hill and more to the point, Family Guy and American Dad. Oh well, it gives me time to knock a few more paragraphs out since my better half is out shopping with my stepmom.

Oh yeah, here's the legacy of FDR, the greatest democrat that ever lived....lol

Back in 2007, when Jerry Falwell died, I made an entry titled The Sickness, which is exactly what I saw in the gloating and seething hatred that reared its ugly head in the gay community. Unfortunately, I'm seeing it again.

When the voters of California passed prop 8, I was disapointed and saddened, but I was also grateful that the laws of that state have no bearing on the laws in states that do allow gay marriage. That's the beauty of a republic. Sadly, I feel more disappointed in the harsh reaction of some people in our community who have taken to hurling racial slurs at a time when we're preparing to see our first black president inaugurated.
I question the sincerity of someone who says they want equality, yet chooses to invoke the memory of a time when blacks were so blatantly mistreated that the scars they incurred are just now starting to fade. How can one speak of discrimination out of one side of their mouth but stereotype in the most hateful way out of the other? I understand that there's frustration and anger, but how does anyone justify hurling racial slurs?

Wow, it's been around two months since I've been online long enough to log on to GA. That's a friggin record for me. Anyway, I took a self imposed sabbatical for a lot of reasons, most of them stemming from my own need to figure out what I want to do with myself. Not in terms of GA, but in terms of life in general.
Looking back on the last few months, it's easy to see that I was spinning out of control. I was ranting and raving at the people I love at home, and even a few people I was fond of online. But the breaking point came for me when I made my girlfriend cry. I didn't hit her(I never would), and I didn't even yell at her(I'd never do that either). I did get pissed off and destroy my room, mainly out of frustration at myself for not being able to do something for her that I tried my hardest to do. It's funny (well not really) because that same day I got a friendly swat on the hand for the way I was treating GA members, and that was when I realized that I had to calm down. My anger in life was coming through loud and clear online, and I'm afraid that a lot of my readers and other members of this site had to plug their ears while I broadcast that anger.
So I did the one thing that made sense at the moment. I logged out and didn't log back in for a while. While I was gone, I got a lot straightened out in my personal life. I got my work schedule, my school schedule and my Nick schedule (the schedule where I don't owe anyone anything and can do something for myself) straight, I talked my dad into helping me get my girlfriend a car and me and Taylor are talking again. Believe it or not, it was Kate who wanted me to make up with him. Even after all the crap we went through, all the nasty back and forth and the name calling, she still wanted me to let him come around. He's clean for now, and I want to help him stay that way.
I'm also working with a publishing agent, and she's driving me up the wall. The first thing she did when we met was hand me back my manuscript and tell me she wouldn't look at it until I gave it back to her with 1 inch margins and 12 point font. Now she says that the damn thing needs about 25,000 more words, and on top of that, she's assigned me two books to read. Oh yeah, and she wants me to attend at least two writing workshops by Spring. I tried avoiding her, but if I don't call her when I say I'm going to, she practically hunts me down, and she's never in a good mood. (sigh)
She basically told me that her job is to be as blunt and hard on me as possible so that we'll send in my best work. I guess I see her point, but damn. She has a way of making me feel like I screwed something up at the exact same time that she's telling me how much potential I have. So, blah.....
Speaking of writing, I haven't forgotten about If By Chance. I just haven't had much time to get the next chapter out. I have a few things that I need to iron out here at home, and I need to get my mind in the right place, then I promise I'll get it done. In the meanwhile, I'm sorry that I haven't already posted it and please don't give up on me.

On July 31st, the forums over at CRVboy will close due to a lack of interest.... (yawn). Okay, just kidding. Not about the forums closing, but about the yawn. To be honest, I'm not very surprised. The Simple Machines forum is very boring, and there was no encouragement from the site administration to post over there. I guess it's kinda sad because it didn't have to be that way, but like they say, water under the bridge.......

I think the next thing to go will be the entire site. There are a few good authors who post there, but the guidelines for posting work there are incredibly restrictive. I tried to submit all of my work to the owner, and he acted like I was trying to crowd out the authors who didn't have as much completed work as I had. That was back in 2006, so God only knows what would happen if I tried to send in all of my work today.

I also feel like the design on the front page is horrible. Whoever is responsible for the design of that page should go get themselves checked for color blindness. I guess if I had to use one word to sum up CRVboy, it would be stale. It's a site that at one time had something fresh and exciting to offer, but the staff has aged with the site, and it really shows.

So what's the point of this post? Just to say that I'm very grateful to be here at GA, the greatest community on the internet. Our forums don't get old because the administrators encourage open thinking and lively discussion. Is everything here perfect? Maybe not, but it's as close to perfect as it can possibly be. I think that the lesson we can take from the closing of the CRVboy forums is that a community is only as active as its members are. We do great things here on GA, and no other site on the internet can match what we have.

It won't be long before the next forum closure comes. I predict it'll be less than six months from now, and I have a really good idea what forum it's going to be. When you have a forum that doesn't attract new users, and doesn't welcome new members to participate, things eventually go downhill. People get distracted, or life pulls them away for good sometimes. When I first came to GA almost three years ago, the membership was completely different than it is today. In fact, there are only a few regulars from 2005 that are still regulars today, but this community is bigger and more prosperous than it's ever been. Other site administrators can take a lesson from GA, but most of them probably won't. If they were going to, they probably already would have, and there would be more places like GA on the internet.

That's right, I said it. We need Michael Savage on the air. We also need Rush Limbaugh, Shawn Hannity and Neal Boortz.

So right now there's this ridiculous push to get Michael Savage taken off the air. Why? Because he has an opinion that some people disagree with. He said that 99% of autistic kids were misdiagnosed and that they're brats who need their parents to tell them to cut the act.

I don't know what makes someone autistic. I don't know if it's a chemical imbalance, or a disease treated with medication, or if it's just a certain type of personality trait. I won't call it a disorder because I can't say that I know enough about it to place that strong of a label on it, whatever it is. Apparently, though, Michael Savage is a doctor and can place a label on it. Is it the correct lable? I can't say.

But what I can say is this....he has a right to speak his mind, and if he loses sponsors (like AFLAC) and listeners along the way, then so be it. But the push by Media Matters, a left wing hate group founded by the radical Hillary Clinton, to try and pressure stations to drop his show is ridiculous. Just let the free market do its job.

The day Tim Russert died, Shawn Hannity choked up on the air. Rush Limbaugh gave a small but touching tribute to him the following Monday, and Neal Boortz did the same. Michael Savage, who came on the air about 3 and a half hours after Russert died, used the occasion to drag his name through the mud, then to stomp on it, spit on it and urinate on what was left. Tammy Bruce did the same thing on her radio show.

According to Michael Savage, every member of congress, the president and all of his cabinet and staff are drug addicted homosexuals who should be arrested and put away without so much as a trial. So should anyone who listens to hip hop, who drives a hybrid, men who get manicures and women who have babies out of wedlock. If your name is Rush Limbaugh, you should be executed for sedition. If you're Shawn Hannity, you should be shipped off to the middle east and turned over to the Iranian president, who should be executed too, by the way. What are Limbaugh and Hannity's crimes, according to Savage? They're numbers one and two on the talk show ratings list, and he's barely hanging on to number three. Bill O'Reilly, according to Savage, is a sex crazed leprechaun who's into devil worship.

And yet, through all of his craziness, we should let him stay on the air because it's good for us. We need him to get on the radio and remind America of who we don't want getting into power. Because believe it or not, there are a lot of politicians who think like he does. Just look at Robert Byrd and David Duke, both members of the Ku Klux Klan, one a democrat and the other a republican.

Michael Savage, just like Byrd and Duke, puts the fun in dysfunctional, and eventually, he'll make that one final statement that pushes his listeners over the edge. When he does, his ratings will drop, more sponsors will leave him, and his show will be canceled. Not because there was pressure from some kook fringe group like Media Matters, but because the market place didn't have a spot for him anymore.

Ok, so I'm sick and tired of hearing people talk about whether or not Barack Obama is a Muslim or not, so let me break this down for you all.

For the last 5 months, all we've heard about is the Reverend Wright controversy, followed by the Father Pfleger fiasco. Now, considering that he's had pastor/priest issues and not Imam issues, how in the world could any logical human being come to the conclusion that Barack Obama is anything but a Christian? Obviously he was attending Christian services for years and years, which was the main criticism he endured during the whole Reverend Wright situation. I guess I'm missing something

John McCain, the Red state flip flopper

Having long been a member of his party's more moderate wing on a number of issues, Mr McCain began adopting more right-wing positions during the primary campaign.

    Immigration

Last year, Mr McCain was one of the key backers of President Bush's plan for "comprehensive immigration reform", which would have created "paths to citizenship" for illegal immigrants, while investing more money in border security.

The plan was very unpopular with the Republican rank-and-file, and Senate Republicans succeeded in blocking the scheme.

During the primaries, Mr McCain announced that his immigration focus would be on securing America's borders, rather than on giving illegal immigrants the chance to become US citizens.

"I understand why you would call it a, quote, shift," McCain told reporters in November 2007.

"I say it is a lesson learned about what the American people's priorities are. And their priority is to secure the borders."

    Christian right

Another McCain, quote, shift was in his relationship with the religious right of his party.

During his 2000 bid for the Republican nomination, relations between Mr McCain and Moral Majority founder Jerry Falwell were notoriously fractious.

The Arizona senator memorably described Mr Falwell and fellow members of the religious right as "agents of intolerance".

But in 2006, ahead of his second presidential run, Mr McCain delivered the commencement address at Mr Falwell's Liberty University, after which he attended a small private party hosted by his former political adversary.

    Interrogation rules

More recently, Mr McCain angered his former allies in the political centre by supporting a bill exempting the CIA from following the same rules on interrogation as the US Army.

    Guantanamo

Mr McCain was one of the most prominent Republican voices opposed to the Bush administration's detention policy in Guantanamo Bay.

But when the Supreme Court recently ruled that Guantanamo detainees should have access to US courts, Mr McCain described it as "one of the worst decisions in the history of the country".

    Oil drilling

Since sewing up the Republican nomination in March, Mr McCain - one of only a few prominent Republicans to accept the argument that human activity is causing climate change - has dropped his previous objection to lifting the ban on oil exploration off the coast of the US.

Barack Obama, the Blue state flip flopper

Since clinching the Democratic nomination, Barack Obama has also been making headlines for his policy shifts.

    Campaign finance

Last month he announced that he would be rejecting public financing for his campaign, and would instead rely on private donations.

The McCain camp accused Mr Obama of "going back on his word", although Mr Obama insisted that he had never made a promise to stay in the public finance system.

    Surveillance programme

Mr Obama also raised eyebrows when he announced that he would not be opposing a bill going through Congress giving immunity to telephone companies involved in the Bush administration's controversial warrantless wiretap programme.

His decision angered many of his supporters on the left, who accused him of going back on his 2007 pledge "to support a filibuster of any bill that includes retroactive immunity for telecommunications companies".

    Gun control

When the Supreme Court decided to overturn Washington DC's handgun ban, Mr Obama declared that the ruling "provide[d] much-needed guidance", despite having previously argued (in a written answer that he says was drafted by an aide and which he had not approved) that the ban was constitutional.

    Iraq

Withdrawing troops from Iraq has long been one of the central planks of Mr Obama's campaign, and was something that set him apart from other Democratic candidates running for the party's presidential nomination.

Since his campaign began, however, conditions in Iraq have changed, violence has reduced, and some commentators have suggested that Mr Obama's position is out of date.

Mr Obama himself has announced that he plans to visit Iraq, where he will make "a thorough assessment" which could lead him to "refine" his policy.

Some critics have seized on this as an indication that Mr Obama is laying the groundwork for a change in position.

    Free trade

Mr Obama recently hinted to Fortune magazine that his strong anti-free trade rhetoric during the primaries may not be reflected in his actual trade policy should he become president.

His remarks are a neat summation of the pressures and temptations that lead politicians to shift their positions during the process of running for office.

"Sometimes during campaigns the rhetoric gets overheated and amplified," he said.

"Politicians are always guilty of that, and I don't exempt myself."

So yesterday was interesting. As most of you know, I work for a golf course not too far from my house working on golf carts. I repair the ones that are down and I maintain the rest of them. Part of my job is keeping the shop in order. I organize and hang belts, hoses, and tools. I also order replacement parts and keep track of inventory.
Well, until March I was the only one doing the job, but since I've been getting more and more yard maintenance work, I've really cut back at the golf course, so they hired someone else.
Now, when I say someone else, I don't mean someone who's competent. This idiot, and that's being kind, gets absolutely nothing done when he's at work. One of his jobs is to move the chemical drums from one raised platform to another as needed, something I'm not supposed to be doing because I'm not 18 Well, half the time, I wind up having to do it anyway because that lazy bum didn't do it on his shift.
To make matters worse, when a new shipment of belts or hoses comes in, he either doesn't hang them at all, or even worse, he hangs them out of order even though there's a clear method for how it's supposed to be done. So then what happens? I have to go back and clean up his mess when I'm on.
So yesterday we were scheduled to overlap each other for an hour, and when I got there, nothing was done. There was an empty chemical drum, there were carts sitting in the shop that needed to be routined (that's what we call a regular tune up/inspection) and there were f**king shop rags almost everywhere I looked. Oh yeah, I forgot to mention the fact that he goes through about three times as many shop rags as I do, and never puts them in the Aramark bin when he's done with them.
And where was he? In the office, sitting at the PC, which wasn't even on, pretending to be working on something important. Of course, the AC was cranked and he was relaxing in the cool air, and in the meanwhile, the shop was hot and in a disaster state. So I went into the office and told him nicely that the drum was empty, and asked him to change it while I took care of the carts. He tells me to move the drum, that he doesn't feel like it. I told him that I wasn't supposed to be moving the chemical drums around, and he told me that he wasn't supposed to be doing it either.
Right at that moment, I felt a flash of heat run over my whole body and I felt like I wanted to kill him, but instead, I just turned and went to our boss. I told him what Herb (the jerk) said, so my boss walked with me back to the shop. Of course, Herb got up and did what he was supposed to do right away, but as soon as our boss was gone, he walked up and told me off.
I was already pissed, and he was trying my nerves as it was. But at some point, he poked my chest with his finger, and it just set me off. I never put a hand on him, but I went off and told him exactly what he was: a fat, disgusting, lazy f**K who probably can't even pay for pussy, then I used my thumb and my forefinger to show him him how small I guessed his dick was before I stormed off.
Of course, he ran back to my boss, and I was sent home. I don't live far at all from work, so it didn't take me long to get home. About ten minutes later, my boss calls and asks if I'd like a chance to get my job back. I said yes and he said to come talk to him, so I went back. The three of us wound up sitting down in his office for what I thought was going to be a civil discussion, but it turned into a forum for Herb to go off on me. He actually tried to stand over me while I was sitting and tell me what line I was going to tow. I got right back up in his face, and I swear I was about to spit on the son of a bitch but instead I just walked out and went back home.
So at that point, I'm figuring that my job is gone for sure, so I decided that I just wanted to lay down. About 20 minutes later, my cell phone rings and it's my boss's boss, the guy who originally hired me, and he asks if I have time to meet him for lunch. So we meet and he lets me tell him what's been going on since March, and when I was finished, he promised me that I wouldn't have to put up with that kind of crap anymore and that I wasn't terminated, which was incredibly cool considering the fact that I've cut my schedule back so much.
I actually wound up working an extra hour yesterday, and I was so amped up from what happened that when I got home, I sat down at my desk and pounded out a chapter and a half of If By Chance. I guess in a way I should feel sorry for Herb. I mean, he's a total slob. He has a belly that looks kinda like bread dough in his shirt, he slouches, and he's got a remarkably wide ass. I say that because it's not proportional to the rest of his body. Also, he rides his bike to work, but he doesn't lose any weight because he only rides the damn thing fast enough not to fall over. Literally, if he rode any slower, he'd fall. It's pathetic. Add to that the fact that he smokes, his teeth are gross and it doesn't look like he washed his knees or elbows, and I'm sure you can get the picture.
    So yeah......

American Family Association calls for boycott of McDonald's
    by Roger Sinasohn Jul 6th 2008 9:01AM

I've heard of a lot of reasons why people avoid "Old McDonald's", as the famous fast food chain is known around our house -- the general unhealthiness of the food, the destruction of the rainforests, their marketing through school notices, and so on -- but the American Family Association has come up with a new one.

The AFA is calling for a boycott of the golden arches because the company is "promoting the homosexual agenda, including homosexual marriage." According to AFA founder and chairman Rev. Don Wildmon, McDonald's is "promoting a lifestyle that would utterly destroy the traditional family." He's right, of course -- now that my neighbors are allowed to get married, my wife and I are required to get a divorce and I have to shack up with a guy.

McDonald's has said in the past that it is "a company that actively demonstrates its commitment to the gay and lesbian community" -- I guess for some, that's a reason to boycott them; for me, it's a reason to support them.

Wisconsin Gay Couples Could Face Jail For Marrying In California
    by 365Gay.com News Center Staff

    LINK

(Madison, Wisconsin) Same-sex couples from Wisconsin who go to California to marry could find themselves facing criminal charges when they return home.

A little known Wisconsin law makes it a criminal offense to enter into a marriage outside the state if that marriage were illegal in Wisconsin.

While the law was passed decades ago to prevent underage couples from crossing state lines to marry it could be used against same-sex couples the Madison Capital Times reported Wednesday.

The penalty is a fine of up to $10,000, nine months in prison, or both.

Wisconsin law limits marriage to opposite-sex couples.

Same-sex marriage became legal in California following a state Supreme Court ruling that went into effect June 17. Unlike Massachusetts which limits gay marriage only to out-of-state couples whose marriages would be legal at home the California ruling opened up marriage to anyone.

LGBT civil rights group Fair Wisconsin is warning couples they could face arrest if they marry in California.

It is not known how many gay and lesbian couples from the state have wed in California. One couple from Madison who are preparing to marry say they are willing to take the chance.

"It would be interesting to be prosecuted," Bob Klebba who is planning to marry longtime partner David Waugh told the Capital Times. "It would really bring up a reaction in the public sentiment."

In 2006, Wisconsin voters approved a constitutional amendment limiting marriage to opposite-sex couples.

Fair Wisconsin said it is now focusing its efforts on seeking passage of bills granting recognition of domestic partnerships.

Spokesperson Glenn Carlson said he is hopeful of getting a bill passed in the next session of the legislature.

NEW YORK - Rush Limbaugh will make about $38 million a year to continue his radio show over the next eight years. In addition, he says will be getting a nine-figure signing bonus from Premiere Radio Networks.

Premiere wouldn't disclose details of the deal but Limbaugh gave the information to The New York Times for an article to be published Sunday.

Limbaugh's three-hour show, broadcast from his office in Florida, is heard on some 600 radio stations across the country. More than 14 million people listen to him at least once a week, according to Talkers magazine. Sean Hannity is second with more than 13 million listeners.

"This is exactly where I want to be, doing what I was born to do, with an amazing audience and phenomenal support from affiliate stations and sponsors," Limbaugh said in a statement. "I'm having more fun than a human being should be allowed to have."

He declined an interview request from The Associated Press.

Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" this year showed his continuing influence in political discourse. He urged his listeners to vote for Hillary Clinton to keep the Democratic nomination fight going in the hopes of hurting Barack Obama.

Limbaugh, however, is no big fan of presumptive Republican nominee John McCain, even though he prefers him to Obama. Limbaugh, 57, said in January that if McCain were nominated "it's going to destroy the Republican Party."

Keeping Limbaugh in the fold is crucial if radio is going to be competitive with the Internet and satellite radio, said Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers.

"It shows that there's a strong commitment on the part of one of the leading companies in our industry to remain viable for the next decade," he said. "If radio is going to continue and to survive it's got to do what it takes to keep its biggest players happy and exclusive to radio."

Premiere Radio Networks, which is owned by Clear Channel Radio, is also partners with Limbaugh in "The Limbaugh Letter," a monthly newsletter, and the Web site RushLimbaugh.com. The company also syndicates "The Rush Limbaugh Morning Update," a 90-second commentary that airs Monday through Friday.

Charlie Rahilly, Premiere president, said advertiser and affiliate demand for Limbaugh's show is at an all-time high.

Despite the reported big price tag, Rahilly said: "It's a really rational decision ... It's great for Premiere and Clear Channel."

He said there are new media opportunities that can make the deal more lucrative in the coming years. For example, the possibility of streaming Limbaugh material on demand on the computer, or making commentaries available on wireless devices, are potential future ways to raise revenue.

Sorry in advance for anyone creeped out by this entry.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about dying. Not wanting to die, but just dying in general. I guess more to the point, it's been consuming all of my thoughts and even my dreams at night. I just get the feeling that death might be right around the corner for me, and I can't shake it.
Last night I woke up in a cold sweat from a dream that I was being murdered, and a couple of nights before, I actually woke up kneeling at my bedside, and I swear I was talking to God. I'm a religious person, and I believe in God, but I don't necessarily believe in premonitions. Still, I can't shake this feeling that something's about to happen to me. It's like a sense of urgency I have to tie up all of my loose ends and do what I can to patch things up with people who matter to me, especially Taylor.
Of course this is probably all just stupidity on my part, but as stupid as it seems, it is what it is. We all have to go sometime, and maybe my time is coming sooner than later. Or, maybe not. I guess only time will tell, huh?

Ok, so it's been 4 nearly meat free days for me I can't say that I haven't indulged a little, since I had 3 ounces of shrimp with my dinner last night, but so far I'm doing pretty good My diet has mainly consisted of leafy greens, colorful fruits and berries, whole grain carbs and at least a gallon of water a day. I was craving seafood last night, so I had my stepmom saut

Finally, after two long months of making my initial request, I can finally say that my work is mine again. I'm not going to mention a domain, but what I will do is caution other authors to be careful where they ask to have their work hosted. Not all site owners will be as willing to take your stories down, and the process could take several weeks. It hasn't been fun, and unfortunately, this morning I had to be very assertive about what I wanted. And as everyone here knows, I hate being assertive. I'm now one step closer to my goal of having my work hosted exclusively at Gay Authors, which in hindsight, is the only site I should have ever committed to in the first place. I certainly wish all other sites good luck, but I think that in order to be the best, you have can't be on a second rate site with second rate authors. And if it isn't GA or one of its affiliated sites, it's second rate.

So I've made a new goal for myself this summer. On top of working and earning as much money as I can, and besides writing and churning out stories that people want to read, I've decided to research NAFTA so that I can form an educated opinion on the issue. It seems to me that NAFTA has been a disaster for the United States and its working class sector, but for some reason, it's been supported by democrats and republicans alike. In fact, in 1993, Al Gore debated Ross Perot on CNN in favor of ratifying NAFTA. Here's part one of that debate.

WASHINGTON (June 13) - Tim Russert, host of NBC's "Meet the Press" and its Washington bureau chief, collapsed and died at work Friday after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was 58.

Russert, of Buffalo, N.Y., took the helm of the Sunday news show in December 1991 and turned it into the most widely watched program of its type in the nation. His signature trait there was an unrelenting style of questioning.

Washingtonian magazine once dubbed Russert the best journalist in town, and described "Meet the Press" as "the most interesting and important hour on television.

He also wrote best-selling books, "Big Russ and Me," in 2004, and "Wisdom of our Fathers," in 2006.

This year, Time magazine named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world.

Russert also was a senior vice president at NBC.
