There's something about this chapter that makes it seem like it would play out better as a series of scenes, like in a TV episode or a movie - but in written word, it seems kind of uneven. What does help is that this story easily lends itself to being able to mentally visualize everything. One other problem, though, is the big ugly tell right at the end of the chapter. Don't think we should've known that his big singing moment would threaten to come back to haunt him so quickly...

Is it just me or does this chapter feel like the closing of an Act 1 and beginning of Act 2? That's the vibe I get from this one.

And here's that unfortunate duo now dumping their messy dilemma on poor Brandon. Two in a row now - while still not particularly strong, again it can be argued that it fits by definition. (Unlike with 9, though I do like Miles's calling that one a "kiss-hanger".)

Well, this looks like an honest-to-God cliffhanger to me - with a certain unfortunate-yet-totally-deserving duo on the receiving end of a shocking dilemma. Maybe not the strongest of one, but I don't think you can bluff your way out of this one.

Not one, but two instances of "things are not always what they seem", here - one over the short-term, one over the long-term. Interesting how that device is put to use in this chapter. Oh, and methinks Lisa had some kind of heads-up before starting this story.

Well, now we're getting somewhere... Re: Helen's disdain for "Pop" - depending how heavy their sound would've been as a band, back in '07 when you wrote this they probably could have stuck to the rockier side more easily, but these days it'd definitely be much easier for them to cross over without even trying - there's just that much more cross-over going on these days in general. Wonder what they'd think of that.

at the kiss tease. You went out of your way to throw readers off with that. I will say though that the relatively slow build in this and the previous chapter makes for an oddly interesting contrast given how fast the boys brought Brandon in to being the new lead singer.

I like the level of detail seen here. This wasn't the first "gay story set in the music world" that I'd come across even when I first read it, but the small details we get make this feel more real and less hokey than the others.

That "bad gaydar" moment was totally over-the-top, LOL. Though I do wonder how he'd have been able to figure Helen out when he was just meeting her now. Then again:

Well...that was quick. Again this reinforces how short Chapter 1 was though. And kind of an awkward ending.

Yeah...I don't like that it's only a 10-day contract. He could end up not even playing, he could be there long enough for there to be the headline and then - oops! Out he goes... Again, there's this feeling of media making this a bigger deal than it really is, even making it into something that it's really not to a degree.

Young and Gay in Putin's Russia: Documentary

So, I stumbled upon a documentary covering the effects of life for young LGBT people in Russia under the current climate. http://www.gay.net/video/2014/01/15/watch-vices-heartbreaking-documentary-young-and-gay-putins-russia (DISCLAIMER [taken from the site]: Viewers be advised. This documentary can be incredibly difficult to watch, and some of the footage is extremely graphic and disturbing. Parts of the documentary may be too intense for some viewers.) I'd like to say I'm shocked at the liberties taken in "enforcing the law". I'd also like to not lie. -
I really do think that as soon as Ryan and Caleb started becoming more prominent...that's when Amber probably started becoming less important to Sam. As much as her recent judgmental opinions made things worse for her...I can't help but think that Sam would've still chosen Ryan and Caleb over her in the end anyway. Why? Simple - because they're gay boys just like he and Brett, and she's not. It's almost like they wanted what happened here to happen, from the way they were scrutinizing her every move like hawks. Suppose what was really going on all this time was that Amber could see what was happening on that front, but she simply reacted badly to it all - her "judgments" being the result?

There's something about this chapter that makes it come off like it was almost too carefully done. As much as it's great that everyone's making up, it's like everyone was following a very specific set of scripts, here.

Caleb needs a good solid Knock-Out punch square to the face for that thoughtless crack. Followed by being completely shut out by everyone else until he pulls his own head out of his ass.

I too agree that Sam shouldn't have told Amber about what he and Brett did with Ryan and Caleb, and that it's not her business to be prying about it. The thing is...I blame Sam squarely for Amber's bad reactions here, because she never would have had even an inkling to pry about what they did, if he hadn't gone and opened his big fat mouth about it. What he does is his business - until he goes and blabs about it, thereby opening up the proverbial Pandora's Box and making it more peoples' business than his own.
