Yeah Fred is a favourite of mine. I'm afraid it will have to remain a mystery why the boys went so peacefully, although, as you point out, we don't know for sure if they did. Thanks for reading and commenting @Israfil You know I always enjoy your comments and appreciate your honesty.

Yeah poor old Fred didn't land on Omaha Beach but he was a bit of a hero in this story and he managed to get Jeff to fix the fence in the end. Thanks @Wesley8890

Rizzo was the only one who knew what happened that night; although I always believed the kids suspected I had something to do with it. After what Darcy did, it was the only way it could have ended. They must have known that. It was, after all, what I had been trained to do. After that day, however, I never felt the need to own or fire another gun. Thanks @chris191070 It was very nearly murder for revenge but it didn't sit right with me either so I changed it. I thought Jeff had probably had enough bad press without cold blooded murder added to it. Self-defence was more acceptable.

Thanks, Gary. This is praise indeed coming from an author I respect a great deal. I know it was a difficult story to read but my fears all along that it would drive readers away weren't realized in the end and I'm quite relieved. The scene at Darcy's house wasn't that long but I think I must have written it and re-written a dozen times before I got it right and then I still wasn't happy. Really pleased you enjoyed it. 😁

Wow! Thanks, Steve. Sorry about your shirt. You make an excellent point about David hopefully being able to move on from Simon. It will be difficult of course, but he will have to if he is to have any kind of life after this. Without giving anything away. This is addressed in the epilogue tomorrow where everything should make sense. It was never going to be a good time story and that may have put a few people off reading it but I needed to get away from The Cockney Canuck and prove that I could do something different. Overall, the reactions were better than I expected so I'm happy. Despite the cliffhanger in the last chapter, I would never have been able to kill off David as well. Simon was bad enough.

Thanks @JeffreyL I know it has been a difficult read for some people. Jeff's character ensured that and I think it will be difficult, if not impossible for most people to forgive him. He was unfortunately, as some have pointed out, a product of his times and we know a lot more now about PTSD than they did then. I'm glad you stuck it out. the epilogue will be posted tomorrow.

Thanks @Canuk Darcy was a religious zealot and a psychopathic killer who had to be stopped. In the end as I mentioned already, Jeff killed him to save his own life but the fact that Darcy was at home and free instead of being in prison where he should have been is telling. It's the reason why Jeff was there and why Rizzo was prepared to help.

Thanks @Sweetlion The future won't be easy for them. Particularly David and also Jeff, who, although hardly a hero wasn't really a bad guy either. We will see how things pan out.

I'm sure that Jeff will spend the rest of his life living with these regrets. Whether that is punishment enough depends on the individual's point of view. Sometimes people get off lightly, sometimes not, as in Simon's case. Thanks for reading and commenting @Phoenix1977

Thanks @Edward It will take a long time for wounds to heal and some probably never will completely. In the end, Jeff killed Darcy to save his own life. A reaction which he had no time to consider. It was what he was trained to do. Darcy would otherwise have been spared.

I remember reading The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe as a kid. It was one of my favourite stories and probably the first book I couldn't put down. I never read any of the others but I would probably still enjoy them. Good choice.
