Useful as this may be for some people, I feel that unfortunately, like a lot of NaNoWriMo stuff, it is a tool for procrastination in disguise.
I have always been an avid supporter of the NaNoWriMo program, however I did the maths recently, and only 13% of those who sign up and commit to 50K actually make it. With a drop of rate of 87%, I can't help but feel they are doing something wrong.
Kudos to everyone who tries, much more to everyone who tries hard, and snaps for those few who make it to the end, but so much stuff from Nano (the books, the merch, associated programs like Scrivener) all seem there to help you avoid writing and make you feel like you are doing "useful" and "constructive" tasks at the same time. I recently discovered that the NaNoWriMo forums count the words in your forum posts - and lots of people use those for their November word counts. I mean, really?
