Carlos Hazday commented on Carlos Hazday's story chapter in Over The Rainbow • Part VIII
Sadness isn't one of the emotions I like to feature too often but I'm glad I seem to have gotten it right with this one. Authors like you keep pushing me to up my game! -

Thank you, Dave. You have no idea how much that means to me. -

Thanks, JP. Getting the tone right was important. It's why I agreed so quickly to Mann's suggestion the events surrounding the girl's death should be in one chapter by themselves. Apologies for the crying. Hopefully, I'll make you laugh with the next one. -

Did you start tearing up in the office? I think it's a rallying of the troops at a time when internal conflict could weaken them. Nobody doubts Cesar and CJ love each other even if at times they're at odds. Brett pointing out it was Cesar who already made reservations may be his attempt at mediation. He's just going to have to bite it and realize CJ's not going to back down. We'll have to wait and see how long that takes. -

I was surprised when I saw the story on Bozo's death yesterday. I was honestly surprised he was still alive. Considering I've made people tear up with a few chapters in this book, I may have to invest in a tissue manufacturing company. Life goes on and we should have a better atmosphere in future chapters. -

I'm scared of heights so I can't hang on the side of cliffs like goats. Thanks for the continued support, bud. We'll have some answers soon when the new book starts posting. -

I don't think this chapter would have been an easy read no matter the day it posted. Glad you liked it in spite of the subject matter, I tried hard to make it as well-rounded as possible. -

You're a good boy. Thanks for sticking with the story even though I know the previous book wasn't to your liking because of the politics. I've dealt with a lot of real-life issues in the series and I've tried to do so in a proper manner. The traveling and spending money are fun but nobody's life is exempt from tears raining down now and then. -

Nope, it's written and it won't happen off-screen. CJ held his own against Brett but was a basket case for a few days. This time it's more serious. He's older and more self-assured and I don't think he'll give in easily. You may have noticed it was Cesar who correctly guessed CJ would want to fly to Sydney and made the arrangements for him. That may have been the first crack. They can argue and fight over anything and everything but the family rallies together when facing difficulties. You're so right about death helping put everything else in perspective. -

The chapter was originally longer; my editor suggested I carve out the trip to Australia and make it stand on its own. Considering I often leave readers scratching their heads because of the number of different things covered in one installment, I liked Mann's idea of making this one all about Liz. -

Thanks, Chris. And thanks for the review of the book!!!!! Mann warned me the scene when CJ, Owen, and Spencer hug in the middle of the airport would start the tears flowing and they wouldn't stop until the end. I tried to infuse the chapter with lighter moments but in the end, death is sad most of the time. Next book's in the works. -

Thanks, Dan! Death should never be an excuse for others to stop living. I'm sure CJ and Owen will always have Liz close to their heart. -

Thanks, Dugh! You know how hard I try to get the technical part right so you liking the writing is great. I've stared at cloud formations often, trying to decipher their shapes. Having one resemble a dragon in flight wasn't a big stretch. My way of remembering and honoring a lost friend. -

Thanks, Def! My usual approach would have been to dispose of the body (I know, tasteless joke. I can't help it.) in a short scene, maybe a couple of paragraphs, but I felt that would be cheating Liz. She didn't play a huge role in the story but she was a character everyone liked. Kind of the same way everyone liked SD. The writing owes a lot to the support team as usual. It's a better story because of them and people like you who've helped when I've asked questions. -

Thanks, AR! I'm glad you found a little solace in the last paragraph. It's what I was trying to accomplish. I disliked ending Liz before the wedding but I thought it was the right time to do so. Endings are sometimes beginnings... -

I'm dumbfounded, Spikey. You without an adequate response? That's unheard of. Considering CJ and Cesar have yet to settle the prenup issue, wouldn't it be a kick in the butt if Liz leaves her interest in the winery to CJ? Although Australia just recently legalized same-sex marriage, the have allowed same-sex partners of Aussie citizens to settle in their country legally for years. CJ may have found a way to settle the issue. He could move and Ozzie could work for the Nature Conservancy at their headquarters in Melbourne! -

There's a chapter or two in the works. Don't be surprised if your editor gets a little slower returning things to you. I'm about ready to start cracking the whip. Join the crying group. I've read the chapter a gazillion times and each time end up with moist eyes. -

Thanks, Mike. It's been a long journey since I started writing four years ago. Putting words to paper (screen) has been satisfying but reactions from readers like you who've been with me from the start even more so. I think most of us have become attached to the characters. -

I'm listening to it as I write this and I'm smiling. Every time I do I also get goosebumps. It's a lovely song to begin with, but his voice and the ukelele turn it into a haunting melody. I felt it fit CJ's mood well: Sad but looking toward better days. -

It wasn't the easiest chapter to write. I don't like writing sad events, I figure life has enough sadness and try to keep the mood as upbeat as possible. But sometimes poop happens and since I try to be as realistic as possible... -

Alarm bells rang in CJ’s head. He felt his stomach churn. “What’s wrong with Ozzie? What do you mean you forced him to take a sleeping pill?” “He’s fine, he’s fine. But”―Brett hesitated for a moment―“shit, there’s no way to make this easy. He got a call from his family yesterday. His sister’s cancer came back worse than before. She’s in the hospital right now and it doesn’t look good.” “FUCK! No! That can’t happen. She was fine when we saw her over Christmas. Damn it… Okay, I’m flying- 110 comments
