Thank you Dan said the children were talking about selling, but there's no timeframe mentioned. They may have assumed they were being left the property and were not aware their father actually left it to the rescue until the will was read.
I just finished reading this and loved it! It's a well-written story of friendship and the stupid things we do when we're young, which we hopefully grow out of. I highly recommend reading it.
