    Wylan has not lost his magic, he is getting stronger with it. His magic seems to react to his emotions, as we saw with the earthquake in Antioch... the fog in Nicea, and now here in Jerusalem. Of all the mages in these books, on a raw strength basis, he is the strongest. Ishan the most well trained... the Witches were dangerous because they work in a coven/Triad. Morwenna who is in the next book, is corruption and needs a holy relic to even match Wylan. So no, the magic is not done, it just exhausts the user and is very difficult to maintain. Ishan was burnt out after Antioch,and severely weakened. Then his fight with the witches in the last chapter exhausted him, and severely weakened them. This allowed Wylan to kick their asses in this chapter.

    Darien is about to face the true horror of what he has done. His plan, his supplies, his equipment, his timber for the siege equipment. His siege that weakened Jerusalem. At the end of the day, Darien knows, he did this. Without him, the Crusade would never have gotten inside. That is a guilt I would never wish on anyone's head.

    After Julian's knighthood and promotion to Darien's second in command, Ashot was the logical person to step up for this mission. He's grown up a lot in this book, he's gotten closer to Stephen, earned his place, and is determined. Given his own fears of what would happen if the Tafurs got their hands on him, he understands how important it is to reach Ishan before the city falls.

    K, so Mrs. Ryder doesn't want a male heir, she wants a female one. She is obsessed with this, to the point of abusively exploiting Mickey, a task she is in the process of switching to Dimitri. She is a ghoul. She does need to be stopped. Hughie is a unique AI because he is Mickey's AI, cared for, built with love and care. Mickey struggling in his mental illness to build a friend he can always count on.     Wylan, also, is coming into his own as a Magi. His whipping up of the dust on the plain to cover the siege engine advance, his constant push back against the Sister's of the Nile and their noise. Jerusalem has a massive cistern system and water table, but it is also built upon stone. The revels now are ended... and a fight is brewing. Wylan is a mighty little man.
