One thing I do like is Caleb's mentorship of Jacob, it's been going on throughout the book. And Jacob growing into it really well, it allows me to give exposition without dumping, but at the same time giving Jacob some agency of his own, developing skills that are useful.

I just don't think it's in certain people's understanding. Certain families are built on conflict and competition Strife that becomes an engine for something dark. When they see a family built on strength, loyalty, and helping each other It just doesn't register, there's always that suspicion: What's the catch, where's the weakness?

This book allows me to tie together some upcoming books as well. Charlie Levesque features heavily in Charlie's been Stolen (an upcoming work where Levesque Senior and Junior are pitted against each other) It also gives me a way to show the Tanaka/Andrew mentorship and why our resident short and terrifying Japanese Canadian is so fond of his Kashin.

I needed a path from Andrew the idealist who believed in the law so passionately in the earlier books, to Andrew who views it with cynicism. This betrayal of the very thing he has worked so long and so hard for changes him.
