  1. As we had finished washing down the kayaks, I turned to Marcus. “I have enjoyed today, I would like to ask your folks for permission to come here again soon, if that is alright with them?” I asked, “I think that will be fine, we don’t own the property anymore, we had to sell up because some of Dad’s investments went downhill, thankfully the new owners have allowed us to remain here renting for as long as we need to stay, which my parents want to be till after I have finished high school at least
  2. It took me four years to finally agree to return to our family home at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, but this time the whole family and friends would be joining me for this trip. Afya was thrilled when we telephoned her to let her know that we were all coming home for Christmas and that we would be bringing some friends with us. Apart from Mum and Dad, who had returned to Australia permanently after many years away in Canada, there would also be Uncle Nate, my cousin Aaron, his boyfriend
  3. With just four days left before Mum and Dad had to return to Australia, as they had set dates for their flights, with Uncle Nate staying for an extra week, we set out to plan improvements to our current property, with four additional huts to be added to the backyard, to accommodate the extra demand for hikers preparing to climb Mt Kilimanjaro. Dad even suggested that we purchase some land very close to the property, where we could have some tenfold buildings installed as additional accommodation

Simba and family and all of his friends travel to Tanzania to spend Christmas at the family home at the foot of Mt Kilimanjaro, and from there, a new adventure begins.
  5. “Well Koen and Hugh would like to stay in touch with you now they know that you are still in Perth, and they gave us their contact information to pass on to you,” Rebecca informed me. Thanks, I will get that off you later, I said in response. It was now Saturday morning, and I realised that I only had one week left of school holidays remaining, before the start of the new school year. “What are we going to do for the last week of the holidays?” Giles asked us all, “Hey, how about we ask Ko
  6. “Woo! Now! All is cool guys, this is my former roommate from my old school – Hugh Oakly,” I explained to my friends, before offering a hand to Hugh, so he could stand up, and turning to my friends to indicate that all was ok, before turning to face Hugh again. “Hey buddy, good to see you again, I guess you know the story about what happened with our former UK friend?” I said to Hugh. “No, not really, all we know is that he was expelled for some reason, and his parents sent him off to a priv
  7. On the way over to the farm, which was a one-hour and twenty-minute journey, which included passing by their former home at Regan’s Ford, my grandparents informed me that my parents and siblings had no idea of this recent purchase and that they would like to keep it that way, so I agreed to say nothing about what I had seen today. During my first week of school holidays, I was kept very busy with farm work, while Dad caught up on the backlog of mechanical work, and for the few days that my grand

  9. “Will do, I will take a wheelbarrow and scoop with me as we go,” Jarrad said sarcastically to his father, “Cheeky brat, get out of here, and have fun,” his father responded smiling. “We are taking part of the Brigadoon Bridle trail Mr Drake, which is about 7 kilometres, so we will be back just before lunchtime, or we can do an additional five kilometres, in which case I have a packed lunch with me,” I informed Jarrad’s father, “Very well, stay safe, and do one of you boys have a mobile with you?

    First Day

“Yes Mum, the second one this week, he had one on Friday, at school too, and it was for the same reason. Someone opening their big mouth, about something that is none of their business,” Jarrad said sourly as he looked and frowned at his sister. With that said, Mrs Drake grabbed Jessica by the arm, forcing her to stand and dragging her inside the house. “I am sorry about this happening… I am guessing that you live not far from here?” Jarrad said to me, as I started to get my breathing under cont
  11. I used to play tennis and cricket, but I am not sure if I want to do that anymore. Gran brought me to enrol and get a tour of the school because my family lives in the country, and it was jointly decided that I stay with my grandparents and attend a smaller private school, than the one I attended,” I replied, and I noticed that Jarrad looked like he was about to cry. “I am so sorry that you had a hard time at your last school. I can assure you that you are very safe here, and if you let me
  12. Maybe, a lot later in the story.
  13. When I woke up next time, I was in a different place, and I listened carefully to try and work out where I was. I knew I was in a hospital, but where, I had no idea. “Ah good, you are awake. Welcome back young Oscar, would you like some lunch, unfortunately, you managed to miss dinner and breakfast with your last episode,” a young man’s voice said to me, and I nodded my head yes. A few moments later a man and a lady walked into the room, “Hello Oscar, I am Dr Raine, and this is senior nurse

    Rizen

For the next three days, Rizen and I rode the horses at a leisurely pace, kayaked on the river, and went for long walks around the paddocks. On Thursday morning, as we returned from the stables to have some breakfast, Gramps came out of the office smiling. “Right boys, we are going to be busy for the next few days, a truck will be arriving at the sheds at about 10 am, so we need to go and open the north boundary gate, to let him in, and I will go and make sure the front end loader is ready to un
  16. After helping to clean up the kitchen, Rizen and I went to my bedroom, “Get changed into some boardshorts, as we are going to get wet,” I said to my friend, “Swimming in the river? Is that safe?” he asked me, “Sure it is, our family has swum in the river tons of times when we came here to visit,” I replied smiling. I quickly changed and headed out to the storage shed that was at the back of the garage, opening the separate side door, where I found a small trailer, with two kayaks attached, along
  17. “Very well, I will wait to hear from you, bye,” Dad said before ending the call. “The housemaster will contact Rizen’s parents to check to see if the change to your grandparents' place is ok or not. Either way, I will be taking you over to Regan’s Ford in about an hour, once your bags are packed and brought outside,” Dad informed me. The trip west to my grandparents’ farm was fairly silent, which was a little strange, as Dad usually liked to chat when he was driving anywhere. When we arrive
  18. I had just finished packing all of my luggage when both of my parents arrived, and I made a point of introducing Rizen to them and explained that I was the only Aussie in this pod with the others being a Kiwi and a Canadian and Rizen coming from the UK. My parents chatted with Rizen for a few minutes, where he explained that he has Tibetan ancestry, that both parents work in law enforcement, and that his paternal grandfather was Australian, before immigrating to the UK. Although he was part
  19. Just a week before the first public holiday long weekend for the year, I received a message from Mum informing me that Gran and Gramps were travelling down to collect me on Friday after school, so I could spend the weekend with them, returning on Monday afternoon. This would be the first time I had been with my grandparents without my parents being there, and I was looking forward to spending some time on their small property. When Friday afternoon arrived, I had already packed a weekend b
  20. It was on my very first day of arriving at the boarding school in the western suburbs of Perth when I first met the two guys who would be my good friends, as well as changing the lives of people who have been caught up in difficult situations, but that would not happen for another 14 years. I was brought up in the family farming property, two kilometres east of the regional country town of Moore, which is on the banks of the Moore River, which usually flows only in the winter months. The to

    Country Retreat

Meeting for the first time in Boarding school, Oscar Q Kingston settles down to life away from his country home town, until an incident with one of his friends, while at home on a boarders weekend had him ending up in a hospital and afterwards changing schools and living with his grandparents on the outer north-east suburbs, where he finds new friends. Months later he bumps into two of his former friends from his old school and after a bumpy start, they form a close friendship that lasts for many years to come, where they go their own separate ways after school ends, and reunite later for a common cause.
