    DA Ch 44 - Changes

I arrived back at the homestead just before noon, and there was no sign of Jake having arrived yet, so I relaxed and waited for him to arrive, which was less than twenty minutes later. I helped him to unload the supplies for the station before letting him get settled into the same cottage that he has lived in before, and I had lunch prepared by the time he arrived back in the homestead. “So what would you like to do now that you are back?” I asked Jake, “Anything that you want me to do boss,
  2. Inside, was what I did not expect, a large Frilled Neck Lizard. I thanked them for handing the lizard in, and said I would do the best to get it well again, before releasing it, and they left with me having to look after the lizard, as well as the echidna, dog and three pups. Leaving the lizard as it is, I headed outside and collected some small sections of large trunks, some branches with plenty of leaves, and back inside the clinic, I walked out the back, and I made one of the large cages
  3. I had already bought a couple of picture frames of different sizes, so when I opened the poster tube, as I expected, inside was my veterinary degree from Murdoch University, and a large flat package contained my Zoology Degree from the University of WA, and I soon had them in the frames, and temporarily sitting on my desk. Most of the other mail was junk mail, except one from Newman Veterinary Clinic, which was a cheque for the use of my vet clinic in Marble Bar four times, in the past two m
  4. “Limestone to Dad, do you copy, over?” I said into the radio mic, “Receiving you son, I am on my way back to the homestead right now, see you shortly, over,” Dad replied, and after getting a drink of cold water, I sat down on the front verandah to await my Dad’s arrival. A few minutes later, Dad arrived with the American Colonel with him, and he was smiling as he climbed out of the Ute. “How did the inspection go?” I asked as I stood up to meet them, “Very good, I think we can do nicely by l
  5. Just a bit of added info - Most cattle and sheep stations in remote areas, have an RFDS medical box, with all medicines numbered, with no other information. This allows the RFDS doctors to have a better control of the medicines in the box, and each station has a registered person who has responsibility for the box and it's contents.
  6. “That is perfect, as each building is octagonal in shape and are 5.3 metres in diameter,” Dad announced, “How many of these, do you have if I may ask Mr Kendrik?’ the Captain asked. “I have 9 already built ready to go, and they are multi-purpose designed,” Dad replied. “Well that will mean two trips, but that is not a problem, since it is a very short distance,” the Colonel said to us, “If you think the runway is too short there is a sealed two lane road running parallel to the airfield, wit
  7. “Our host spotted it first, so you can blame him for noticing the reflection in the mirror of his personal vehicle,” the Captain replied. “Nice going Jex, I will have to make sure we take better care next time,” the 2IC replied. “Right, we have a different activity today, our esteemed host has informed me that apart from the regular museum visitors, we have some three Globemaster aircraft landing on runway one at 1000 hours, carrying two B24 Liberator Aircraft, and some jeeps and other equi
  8. Once the police vehicles had left, leaving the station Ute at the homestead, Dad transported the Captain, I and the 4 squad members back to my Land Rover at the car park, before heading back to the camp, to collect the Hawkei, so we could collect the rest of the squad who remained at the illegal clearing site. When we arrived back at the site, I estimated that they had cleared about 2 acres of land, which I was not too happy about, and as I wandered around, I thought this maybe a good locati
  9. Yes, most freehold land like crown land is still open to mining exploration and digging. there are some exceptions to this rule, depending on when the land was granted, and if it remains in the same family, then m8ning companies can not touch the land beneath.
  10. “Not sure yet, the army squad are heading over there on foot, which will take some time, as it is over six clicks from the base camp, and I am on hold to speak to the Police District Superintendant, over,” I replied, “Ok we will head over that way and await instructions, over,’ Hedley said just as the voice came over the other radio. “Superintendant speaking, is that you Jexon, over?” the voice said, “Yes sir it is, I have found intruders with heavy machinery, on the airbase land, inside the
  11. “Good morning Jex, when did you arrive home from Perth?” Tim said to me, “Yesterday afternoon, but I had to make a trip into Marble Bar soon after I arrived, to deal with some business,” I replied. “So this is what your folks have provided for us, it looks good mate,” Tim said. “Yes, but this is the first chance I have had to see it,” I replied, and I spent the next twenty minutes checking each building, and the layout of the camp along with the SAS troopers, before settling into the briefin
  12. After twenty minutes there was still no sign of the family plane, so I was beginning to worry that something may have happened, and I was just about to make a call home, when I saw our family plane landing. “Sorry about the delay children, I got caught up with problems on the station and also had a flat tyre on the drive back to the homestead,” Dad explained, as we headed out to the plane and stowed away our luggage, before climbing in. “You can be the senior pilot home son, I am fairly tire
  13. The helicopter landed on a open lawn area, near the boat shed of Camp Quaranup, where the Professor and some of the university students were waiting for our arrival, and once we had everything offloaded, Ted set off back to his base, while we climbed into the minibus and we were driven to the nurses quarters and isolation quarters accommodation, that are 400 metres past the main accommodation complex. We spent two more days in Albany, spending some of that time exploring the area around the
  14. “Well mate, we have enough food to last us a few days at least, if we ration it a bit, in case we are here longer than two days,” I said to Auggie, “Wow, marooned on an island just before a big storm, I would not have thought it to be possible these days,” Auggie commented, and I chucked at that comment. “This is the second time for me, I was on the island over two weeks ago, for two daily trips to the island, which ended up being an overnight stay for me, because of bad weather, and all I h
  15. “Anyone have a pocket knife with a screwdriver on it?” I asked as more people appeared, “Yes I have one,” Auggie and one other student said together. “Good, both of you remove one of the bedroom doors, we will need to use it as a carry board. “What about one of the camp stretchers?” the professor suggested. “Even better and quicker too,” I replied, and moments later we had a camp stretcher bed in the room, and using the sleeping bag under her, we lifted her very carefully onto the stretcher,
  16. “Hey look, someone had left behind their esky and thermos,” one of female students said, just as I was entering, “Does it have any markings on it to say who owns it?” I asked casually, and turning the thermos over, and she readout the initials ‘JF’, which I had written on them in felt pen before leaving the island two weeks ago. “Maybe they will come back for them,” I suggested, and she nodded in agreement, and put the esky and thermos into one of the cupboards for safe keeping. I could see
  17. I must have fallen asleep, as the Sat phone ringing woke me up and I jumped up to answer it. “Hello, Jexon speaking,” I said, “Mr Kendrik, This is Ted, I am sorry, but you are going to have to rough it on the island for tonight, as the storm wont be clearing until just before day break,” the Pilot informed me. “That will be fine, I still have a little bit of soup, a sandwich, fruit and water with me, plus I have a heavy jacket on, so I will stay dry and I have found some shelter out of the w
  18. I was surprised to see how rocky and barren the island looked when I was checking the photos, there is some vegetation, low shrubs and grasses, and I guessed that with the island being sow far out to sea, that there are constant strong winds battering the island from the Southern Ocean. I decided to make a weekend trip to Albany to check out Eclipse Island for myself, before the expedition takes place, and I sent Dad and email to let him know of my plans, and asked if he can arrange for perm
  19. Oops, sorry about that, it’s fixed now
  20. “You and I will be spending the free days from the airbase over there, during the next two weeks, to you will have an advantage over your older brother, by the time he comes back home at the end of the semester in July,” Dad said. After lunch, Dad, Hedley and I headed back to Limestone station, this time in the Biplane, as it needed a bit of a run, having been sitting under the netting for so long, and it took us nearly thirty minutes to get there in the slower plane, but I didn’t mind at al

    DA Ch 27 - Newman

“Awesome, no more school after December,” Rhodes said excitedly, and we all chuckled at his happiness, and I gave him a soft push to the side, then I ruffled his hair. “You will have to remember that if this does go ahead, then Jexon will be the boss at Limestone,” Dad said to Rhodes, “That is not a problem, I am happy to follow his lead,” Rhodes replied smiling. “When I get back from Newman tomorrow, you can join Dad and Me as we are flying to Limestone after lunch tomorrow,” I said to my b
  22. I was also busy at the Perth Zoo, since I am studying Zoology as well, and it would be just seven weeks before I am home again for the 4 day Easter long weekend, in Mid April, which are also the school holidays for my siblings. A few days after settling back into my studies, I sent an email to Marcus. “G’day mate, hope all is well with you. As you have probably seen in the media, we are now open to the public and for the first two days we had over 600 vehicles pass through our gates. T
  23. “Works every time sir, although I do warn the staff over the radio, before I start it,” I replied, as I came to a stop near the vehicle, with the other parachutists, rapidly approaching on foot and forming a security detail around the aircraft, which caught me by surprise, until I saw who was exiting the plane. “Mr Prime Minister, this is indeed a surprise and honour,” I said as he approached us. “Mr Kendrik, I have heard a lot about this new museum, and I decided to come and have a look fo
  24. “That is $1,735 dollars just in gate fees,’ Hedley said softly, as another vehicle approached the gate, and Hedley passed over an information brochure and informed them that cold water is available at the operations shed, on the taxiway near the north end of runway two,” to the visitors, as they paid their fee and drove on. Jumping into my vehicle I drove north and after counting twenty more vehicles, I stepped out and waved down the next vehicle behind it. “I am sorry sir, we have to have a
  25. I discovered that the light switch to the fuel store also turned on the lights now located in the underground bunker, as I descended down the steps. Nothing had changes in the first room, so I entered the passageway, and began looking into each room on the left and right hand side, with the last right hand door being into another passageway, which was dark. Using my torch, I found a single door at the end, and I entered and found a light switch, which revealed that I was now in a lounge room
