298. ASPARAGUS PICKLED Cut and wash the heads of the largest asparagus; place them in cold water for two hours; scald carefully in salt and water, then lay on a cloth until cool; make a pickle of salt and vinegar and boil it; to one gallon of pickles put a quarter of an ounce of mace, two nutmegs, a quarter of an ounce of whole pepper, and pour your pickle hot over them, cover tight with a cloth, and let stand a week, then boil the pickle, and let stand a week again, and boil again, when cold, cover closely.

@clochette, you might like to read Young's Demonstrative Translation of Scientific Secrets. It is full of little snippets of how to make a huge range of stuff from inks to Extending honey to gunpowder to Beer and wine to solder to Lead paint (not advised) to pickling asparagus. My grandmother had a wooden trouser press that I ended up with. It got used for craft projects and creating a herbarium. It worked really well.

Hmmmmm not as cold as it is for Clo and Marty but wet and cool here as we get the remnants of a tropical cyclone here. It was really windy last night and we have had drizzle all day. Very weird weather. Humid with the drizzle hanging around all day. No proper rain just annoying.
