    Irene is fun to encounter in my imagination. Perhaps she realizes that while Heinrich hired her and pays her, Rick is the real backbone of the business. Rita wasn’t prepared for her, that’s for sure. Neither was she ready to hear about the railroads in exhaustive detail from Harold. Hope your Christmas was lovely - your comments certainly brightened mine!

    Rick got to put Rita in a bind without having to corner her himself. While it’s not a huge victory, Rick can feel satisfied in her discomfiture and in his father’s irritation. He has managed to get a small measure of revenge, perhaps. Heinrich Senior can let his stomach churn over the weekend, and Rick can feign complete innocence.     A kind of music sounded through the Ernst and Son machine shop. Rick hummed aloud. It might or might not have been an old Tammy Wynette tune, “Stand By Your Man.” His mother had liked that song, and it stuck with him. Whether he was off key mattered very little right at that moment. Cleaning the shop was a joy; his heart skipped a little as he made everything tidy for the arrival of Heinrich Senior. Memories of the previous night replayed themselves in Rick’s head. Gus held my hand. Y

    If I could sit with you on Christmas Day for just a fraction of the afternoon and laugh at bits of wrapping paper strewn across the floor, and ribbons gone astray, inhaling scents to tickle the gourmet, from which no nose or stomach is immune, enough to make the toughest grumbler swoon, and dissipate the everlasting grey; I’d save for you my very favorite joke, the one that’s guaranteed to make you smile, as maple longs snap merrily in smoke perhaps you’d take a hug in friendly style, the warmer, brighter spirits to convoke - if I could only sit with you a while.

    Boone and Coy have let their tensions dissipate with the excitement of investigating a new town and looking to buy land. The people they’ve met so far seem okay, but time will tell. The boys are right to treat everyone with caution and wariness. In the meantime, Boone and Coy can go examine land for themselves, knowing they don’t have to go any farther. Great chapter!

    The whole of Independence Day took three chapters to write, but by the end of the day, Gus and Rick have established a firm friendship. Now if only Rick can believe in it.     How could Marta not fall for a gear head and mechanic like Jared? And the boy must be taken by the unusual Marta, too. Rick has been a goner for a while, now; maybe the man is growing on Gus. He stayed for fireworks, after all. I think you’re right that Zoltan and Magda must be unsettled by what they returned to find; Eagle Lake fireworks aren’t their usual milieu.
