You’re right. This poem fits our times well. I like the image of trees bowing and swaying before the wind, contrasted with that of the calm harbor.

It’s hard to watch and listen to these two men as they try to talk out what they can’t quite say or hear. Coy is saying as plain as he can that he feels kind of lost without Boone; nor can he stop worrying about what others might think as a way of avoiding how he feels. Boone can’t seem to say he likes Coy, without pushing the man away in the next breath. Perhaps time and a new beginning will afford them more clarity.

Or maybe “Fifty percent chance of a huff.” I’m glad you thought there was some growth here. Thanks for your forecast, and for reading this chapter.

I fear one might channel Wagnerian opera with Rita...

Rick is sure enjoying the afternoon with Gus. He’s enjoying the moment. What’s better is that Gus seems to be having a good time too. Rita is involved in something she doesn’t much want to share, or so it seems. Thanks so much for reading the story and for your thoughts.

I hope the rest of the chapter brought your blood pressure down, and made you purr. Thanks for your very kind and encouraging comments.

Rick feels like he won the lottery, having an afternoon with Gus. Better still, the pianist seems to be enjoying himself, too. Rick may not feel as if he’s earned this wonderful day, but he’s not going to let it go for a moment. I think you’re right that the elder Takacs may be less than pleased at the day’s developments. As for your inspection, Rick may want someone else to do that.

It certainly seems like he’s had a lot of that flavor, doesn’t it?

I’m glad you thought this was a sunnier chapter than others that came before. Between Gus and Rita, there’s no contest in Rick’s mind. He’d choose Gus every time. Their connection is growing slowly, but happily. Thanks very much for reading and for your thoughts.

You’d make Neil Diamond smile.

Caroline Lee has been a fun character to write. We’ll see more of her again. Growth is a slow and sometimes unsteady thing. Rick has at least set Rita back a bit for the time being. Fireworks? You mentioned fireworks? Thanks for reading and for your thoughts.

I can imagine Caroline inclining her head and smiling at your ovation. However, her connecting Gus and Rick was quite unconscious. However, Rick was delighted no matter how it happened. I’m glad you enjoyed the Strawberry Social; the scent of Brats on the grill is hard to ignore, let alone the treat of shortcake. Eating with Gus just made it unforgettable. It makes me grin knowing you enjoyed yourself. I just hope your interior playlist allows you to continue your enjoyment. Many thanks for your comments and for reading.

Poor Vincent. He seemed content to make a new friend in Joey. Rick seems so happy to have Gus with him that Willy Kohler is a distant memory. Rita is more bothersome than that, and Rick refused her entreaties fairly firmly, though politely. I’m glad you continue to read this story, and thank you for commenting.

It would be hard for Rick to disguise his pleasure in Gus’ company, at least on this day. Jerry, Cheryl and Caroline may talk, or they may just wait and see. But at least they can be happy for their friend. Thank you for your comments, and for reading!

Caroline’s choice of table was probably completely by chance. But what a piece of luck! Rick could use some. And once Rita reappeared, how could he scorn his good fortune? Thanks very much for your thoughts, and for reading this chapter.

Growth can be slow, quiet and unseen. But Rick certainly seems to have grown a little. Thanks for reading!

“Well, come on, then, don’t just stand there.” Caroline Lee worked to lever herself out of her lawn chair. “Help me up.” The procession was past, on its way to the west end of Main Street. Gus and the Takács family were lost in the dispersing throng along the parade route. For Rick, the sun was dimmer. “Oh, sorry.” Rick turned to his neighbor. He took her elbow and assisted her standing. Vincent, Mrs. Lee’s Labrador, rose with a canine dignity that suited his years. The d

Wow. The Rita McKee War Memorial, honoring the fallen. And every Independence Day, someone lays a basket of candy at the base of the statue for all the deserving children of Eagle Lake. I like it. Rick’s subconscious has been hammering away at him for a long time. People like Caroline Lee have been wonderful neighbors to him. When he thinks about it, Rick can remind himself that people like her see something good in him. Thank you very much for your thoughts. I appreciate your reading this chapter.

It may not have been intended to hang us off the cliff, yet we’re twisting slowly in the wind, nonetheless. We still need to hear about Jimmy’s past; we still need to know what tortured horror drives him, and how it will explode when Fergus threatens Sawyer. And as for the Omegas, I guess they are found in the Physics Pack.

I enjoyed this joyful holiday tale. Thank you for reminding us of people like this.

Coy cuddles cozy. Boone can live with that for now, until Coy has to decide whether to kite off on his own, or stick with his friend. Their journey gives them chances to weave themselves ever more tightly together. You present the present idyll so well, we want it to last forever, yet we know the time for choosing is coming.
-
Hope your parade wasn’t badly spoiled by her appearance.

Rick’s long, long fuse is lit. Perhaps he’ll explode, or maybe he’ll just sputter out. I’m happy you could enjoy a hot July parade in the sunshine even as cold December closes in on us in the north. There was so much to watch and hear, it’s no wonder the Takacs kids from the big city saw something to amuse and pique their interest. And Independence Day isn’t over yet. Thank you very much for your comments and for reading!

Rita certainly seems to do precisely the wrong thing at the worst time, doesn't she? I'm glad you can recognize the scenes and see the images painted in this chapter. Rick has had other opportunities before, but they've all gone wrong. However, this summer seems to present him with a choice. Mrs. Lee appears to know how to ask questions that make Rick squirm a little. I suppose all neighbors know how to do that, especially in small, close-knit communities. Thanks very much for continuing to read this story, and for your comments.
