  1. Geron Kees

    Chapter 5

I recall my fist grade teacher glaring at me once and saying, "you're very verbose for someone so young!' And in Dutch, too.
  2. Geron Kees

    Chapter 5

The Ardvoon would have to know that someone is standing at the gate. Their defense allows what they want to pass, but nothing else. They would surely want to know someone was interested in what was happening below. Not that I know any fifth-order beings personally, but I HAVE heard things!

    Chapter 5

And not actually minding the process, after all.

  6. Geron Kees

    Chapter 5

Charlie has a tough time acting stern and mean for long. His plans will change as they go along.

    Chapter 5

Browbeat loves to have fun. He likes the various twists and turns, as long as they don't endanger his friends. But if that happens, look out! He is still finding out what the Madracorn built into his artificial body. That leaves him - and me -- a bit of a bag of tricks for the future.
  8. Geron Kees

    Chapter 5

Even the cutest puppy has a mean face. But I tend to agree with you that the new Browbeat is more likely to elicit a sigh of admiration from an opponent than a roar of anger.
  9. Geron Kees

    Chapter 5

Just remembering that the larger the bone, the more trouble the dog has dragging it around!

  12. Geron Kees

    Chapter 4

It did seem like it, at times! The medical world runs at its own speed, definitely.
  13. Geron Kees

    Chapter 4

Technology seems to be limitless, the more the mind can grasp of science. I am amazed at how much it has changed in only my own lifetime. Given thousands of years, who knows what any race can master of the universe?

  20. Geron Kees

    Chapter 4

I hope to be able to finish the story now that the whirlwind of medical involvements has waned a little.

    Chapter 3

It's a retro image. Since I tend to write stories that are not immersed in the techno-babble culture of today's young people, it marks me as an old fart.
  22. The bluish star around which the Ardvoon world revolved was gone now, once again immersed within the sea of stars around them. It had been a quick transition, just about a light year, but far enough to remove them from easy observation even by the senses that a planet-bound fifth-order life form could bring to bear. The Ardvoon's defense surely cut off their own ability to scan beyond their world, but Charlie didn't want to chance that the aliens had some unheard-of way of observing them, even s
  23. They were still seated in the command chamber of Investigator, but now they roamed in mind in a group within Charlie's second presence. Perhaps not surprisingly now, Amtapora, Grim, and Castor were along for the ride with them. The link they had established with the quantum minds, and the less easily described mind that was Castor, seemed to now be permanently open to them if they desired it. It did not provide communication in words with the alien shipmind, nor the entity from the island of Mni
  24. "It was in the time of our first expansion to the stars," First Captain Anon began. "In the earliest days, in fact. Our technology was primitive by today's standards, and our experience equally limited. Early attempts at starflight did not come with the technologies we have today. The first star systems my people colonized were reached with sublight vehicles that relied on relativistic speeds to get colonists to new worlds in acceptable periods of time for those aboard ship. As a prelude to thi
  25. "I'm there," Charlie said via mind touch, as he came to a stop in space near the four Loturi vessels. "Kip, ask Grim which of these ships Anon was speaking to us from." "He says the second ship from the right in that pattern." Charlie nodded, but in his second presence it was a totally immaterial action. "I don't think the defenses these ships have will keep me out, if Amtapora's defenses couldn't." "The big voice agrees," Kippy returned. Charlie sensed his boyfriend sigh. "It sti
