Until Gary commented, I didn't think there'd been a weekly wrap up for this week. When I click on GA's front page, there's no headline blog showing. ๐คจ Don't know whether that's just me or the blog is feeling particularly shy this week. ๐๐
When I first started to write this story, I had no idea I was creating the antithesis to the identikit queer hero.๐คจ๐๐ How's that for being aware of my potential readership? I didn't go hunting for Eric. He presented himself, fully formed, and demanded that his story be told.
A journey that started with one phone call born out of desperation has ended well. My editor suggested writing Tyler's story. I don't feel particularly capable of writing teens, especially if he's going to be the focus of the story.
Eric has a way of creeping into so many people's hearts. He feels like a real man to me. If this was the last I'd be writing about him, then yes, I'd be sad too. But in a few weeks', or months' time, I'll be back in deepest Herefordshire, starting the rewrite.
Thank you! If you're fairly new to my writing, be warned quite a lot comes in the form of short (or not so short) stories. An entry for GA's anniversary story collection is probably next.
Using cross-generational characters is one of my fascinations. Across 50 years, things have changed so much (and sometimes, not at all). Urban living currently but from a rural background, that's another area that gets my creative juices flowing. For all the continued troubles that might come from city living, queer folk there are at a huge advantage compared with those isolated in rural locations. Thanks for reading!
Thank you. I've tried to keep it believable rather than, as you say, Eric suddenly becoming the archetypal 21st century gay man. I've enjoyed reading your comments and I'm glad the story clicked with you.
In their bedroom, Andy carefully extricated a waistcoat out from its layers of tissue paper. He'd come back up from breakfast to find the royal blue gift box waiting on rumpled sheets. Holding the garment up, he inspected silk brocade in a range of vibrant jewel colours that had drawn him to the waistcoat in the first place. That cycling holiday in York felt a lifetime away. The waistcoat was gorgeous โ a perfect complement to the suit hanging from one of the wardrobe doors. Already, emerald thr
Yes, you read that right. Later today (probably early evening my time) the final chapter in Eric's story will post. It's going to feel very odd knowing there aren't any more chapters to write and publish. Fridays will once more be @Carlos Hazday's domain. ๐คจ๐
If you've already read the story, I hope you enjoyed it as much I loved writing it. If you've yet to venture into Eric's world, now's the time.
It's all too easy to make disaffected youths into pantomime villains. A lot of the time, they're young people with hopes, fears, and desires who are weighed down by their circumstances. Some are offered a chance to get free; others aren't.
I can see Eric scratching his head at this statement. ๐คจ๐
Yes, though Tyler knows more about queer things than Eric. Not saying much, maybe. His knowledge only adds to his sense of alienation, frustration, and anger. With connections made, there's hope he'll become happier with himself, however he ends up describing his sexuality.
Most local authority youth and children's services are stretched beyond capacity doing what is required by law. Any 'added value' activities would have to be run by outside organisations. But at least such groups exist. It would be pretty difficult for a queer youth to be as ignorant and isolated nowadays as it was when I was growing up.
