Why did Monday mornings always feel so rushed? No matter how well prepared he was, Andy hated the start of the week. Even if he worked with clients over the weekend, there was still something about Mondays. Just as well he tried to avoid having appointments then. Unlike Adam who always had the joys of a commute every working day unless he was on holiday. At least the work that morning was local: he had a meeting scheduled with his supervisor from A Helping Hand, the charity he volunteered for.

Indeed. Eric lacks a level of social skills and having to deal with an inebriated bigot would've been beyond him and totally unfair.

Indeed. I admire those individuals who invite others round for a Christmas meal, like Sandra and Brian. But it only works if everyone meets on equal terms and there's no compulsion.

@Jaro_423 It's up to you to decide what you want to do with the day, as with any day. It's irritating if other people project their expectations for Christmas Day onto you. Eric starts from expecting nothing and is pleasantly surprised by what happens.

'Swaddle infant spring' is a lovely image, and I enjoyed Persephone and her duvet as well. 'The ages ... will not be long enough to sing your grace' could be applied to your poetry as well, my friend. Two beautiful poems, glittering in the star-dappled snow.

@Jaro_423 Hmm ... maybe I'm not very imaginative ... So far in my writing, most of my stories have their roots firmly in the real world. I suspect I'd lack the application to create the new worlds you need for sci-fi, fantasy, and so on. Thank you for your comments - they're fascinating and informative.

Eric values his independence above all other things. This is the case for many older people. In fact, the daily struggle is sometimes what keeps their flame alive. It saddens me to hear of someone going into a home and only lasting a few weeks or months there. Why not? There's always room for more stories here - fact or fiction.

It's a pivotal moment and one I very much enjoyed writing. Eric hasn't suddenly transformed overnight though. The fact that Andy has rescued him and plans other practical steps would mellow most people, I think.

Yes, like many older people. Even things like the phone's downstairs and he isn't. In extremis he could manage to get it probably, but the risk of an accident would be greatly increased. Andy's enthusiasm perhaps outweighs his practicality at this point, but he has the capacity to improve.

Digital exclusion here in the UK is a growing issue and not just with the older members of society. In an attempt to save money, many local and national government interactions now require an email address and the ability to be online. People may be able to find their way around a social media site, but not an official form and everything else that goes with it. As long as you have the skills to do what you need to, that's enough in my opinion.

@Jaro_423 When one sees other people experiencing emotions, feelings, things, which you've never had the opportunity to, is it surprising anger and other dark feelings emerge? I hardly think so. Like Eric, I imagine having those feelings don't exactly improve the situation either. Thank you for the compliment in saying the chapter resonated with you.

Hmm ... I suspect it's not that simple. He's had weeks of people coming in and out of the cottage. Maybe he learned through experience, or maybe he took out his exasperation on Andy who then gave him the solution?

@deville I think his irritation comes from the invasion of his space, the inconvenience, the disruption. No matter how good the end result. I have no direct experience of small town gossip, but it doesn't take much imagination to see it as a many-headed hydra. Too often there's a 'no smoke without fire' mentality.

Puppi mirrors my thoughts exactly when I was a lurker, and after I joined a lot of the time. I would look at the accomplished, knowledgeable feedback of those who had already commented and I knew i could never articulate anything like that. The only way I kinda got over it, was to write my comment without reading anyone else's first. I still have an element of that rhetorical question in the back of my mind when I comment now. -
I don't. I like the human interaction, and the machines infuriate me.

Yes, except in a playing context. As fixer, he may have to contact a long list of people, especially if someone drops out. That's why Helen is so pissed off.
