Great choice, Sweet. All her stories of Ancient Greece are worth exploring. Her learning is worn lightly, and they're very engagingly written. My favourite is The Last of the Wine.But my absolute favourite is The Charioteer, which is set in 1940s wartime London.- 2 comments

Err ... Don't think so somehow. Gloria might indulge in such 'keeping up', but I don't expect Joy to join in anytime soon. She'd have to buy a computer first. Maybe the sight of her groceries appearing as if by magic will change her mind ....

@droughtquake Yeeeesss ... but doesn't she get any brownie points for accepting their offer? Even if she's fallen out with Douglas (not Pete - he's the guy who rescued her), she could've still put the house on the market. Her default tone does seem to be 'grudging' though ...

Exactly, dugh. If you don't do it yourself or have someone else do it for you, you barely exist as far as local and national government are concerned. In the haste to save money by making everything online, a considerable number of individuals are being left behind.

Thanks, CG. It's good to be posting about him again. Yes, what will he think of life online? It surprises me how many older people still don't want to have anything to do with computers. Even though it's getting increasingly difficult to exist without them.

Eric is himself. As he appeared in my head. I've said before, I had no idea how far removed Eric was from any of the usual tropes in gay stories. He's much more genuinely working class than Forster's depiction of Scudder. And anyway, a century's passed in the meantime. Interesting idea though.

Eric also phoned Andy towards the end of Volume 1 when he recounted how Brian rescued him at the library. But yes, I do take your point. At the start, Eric would never have considered phoning Andy. Or anyone else, I suspect.

He does, but the way he lives his life doesn't fit in with society's expectations. In a city it wouldn't matter so much; here, in a smallish rural town, he's more noticeable. people with nothing better to do, see smoke without the remotest hint of fire.
