Hmm, good question. Lawrence might've gotten a bit more used to it, but recall the sensation of lack of privacy he'd experienced at first... not only in the room that stays unlocked when he's not there, but also the invisible eyes that seem to be watching from every corner...

Doors never stay closed at Veridien... there's hardly any privacy, save for when people are sleeping... or is there? Lawrence focuses on the book now, and he'll go down an interesting path because of it.

Not to say that Bastien wouldn't enjoy such a view... but he might be a little too possessive, as you will see Yeah, it's crazy to realize how different some things were back in the day. I like to believe that I did my due diligence with the research for this story so I can reflect the era when things are happening down to details.

Like other people at Veridien, Espe has her own layers... one of them being glamor, lol. The photo is an important clue... for the whole edifice of the story - consider it something between a prop and a symbol.

Ali is representative for what Veridien might want to teach these boys... such as decorum. As for who took the photo... that photo will reappear at a critical point in the story.

They were kind of 'suspended' in time - and in the real world, Theo became an adult (which was needed for him to gain strength and abilities to come back).

Initially, both Wolf in the City and Beyond the Veil were meant to be urban fantasy stories... so yeah, they will not be severed from the real world.

That is quite the characterization of Herr Becker! We won't delve too much into his psyche - let's say that we might all become a little too disgusted, and that would smear the pages, lol. But he definitely sounds like someone you described. And he is everywhere, creepy and eavesdropping. The boys have all the reason to be wary of him.
