    I will make a note in future chapters to explain Otis's behavior a bit without giving spoilers (so that I don't hint, by accident, in another direction than intended). His personality and behavior are molded by past experiences and environmental factors, and less genetics.

Also, I feel the need to add that his way of being is more a result of environmental factors than genetics, which is why I won't put a certain label on him.     Yes, indeed... and I believe I would warn readers in chapter notes about upcoming darkness. This is definitely a theme, and while it is still a romantic story I'm telling, the background will be painted in dark colors. You noticed a few great things about Otis, only that in regards to his memory... that is a thing that will come back throughout, explaining more about him.

    To some degree, yes, they are similar. Like Carter, Otis tries to rationalize every situation, taking people's words 'at face value', without noticing the nuances and 'what isn't said'.
