The master mind... does exist, and I won't say anything else so that I don't spoil the future surprises I have planned. There will be explanations, and even though the situation appears so difficult to disentangle at this point, I will make it so that it all becomes clear by the time the story finishes. Yes, you are right, there are many things that can happen, many directions, so it's up to me to deliver the one that's the most satisfying. Thank you for your comment! There are other forces at work that have so far remained in the shadow except for brief appearances, so all the confusion is totally legit. Yes, the big question is, and I'm trying to make it clear through the story - what makes the person you love the one you love? Is how they look really that important? Or is it something else? I won't promise that the answers will be easy. It's something I'm trying to figure out how to convey in the clearest way possible, but it's a challenge I'm willing to undertake. Thank you for your comment! I love it when people see through the text, beyond it, and detect these questions I'm trying to raise with my stories.

I only recently found out about this book from another book I'm currently reading. In Swimming in the Dark, Tomasz Jedrowski's characters bond and have a gay relationship over one lending this book to the other. The action takes place in the still-communist Poland, and Giovanni's Room is at the time an 'unauthorized' read (that's to say illegal). I know it will be a sad story because of the summary, but I know I'll finish it because it's well written. However, I'm not sure I have the guts for Giovanni's Room. I understand its value, and thank you for your review, but reading such books tends to leave me moping for days. -

I see that no one has commented under this title, yet, which surprises me a little since I thought a lot of people would have read it... I won't give it a rating because I fear it wouldn't be fair if it were a perfect 5 out of 5, but neither a 4 out of 5, or a 3.5 out of 5. It's beautifully written, yes, a cliche, I know, but it truly is. On the other hand, I cannot agree with you more. It's an eulogy, and I don't know if knowledge of the movie before reading it cast a shadow over my experience, but it did feel like that from the first pages. That made it a painful read, which is why I abstain myself from giving it a final rating. (If forced, I think I'd go with perfect 5) Great review, thank you for writing it!
