  1. Hey, duggie.
  2. Well, in the UK (except Scotland, apparently) GCSE stands for General Certificate of Secondary Education. It is taken at around 16 years of age. GCSEs were introduced in 1988 to establish a national qualification for those who decided to leave school at 16, without pursuing further academic study towards qualifications such as A-Levels (Advanced Levels) or university degrees. They replaced the former CSE (Certificate of Secondary Education) and O-Level (Ordinary Level) qualifications, uniting the two qualifications to allow access to the full range of grades for more students.
  3. <Pops head round door and sees there's been 16 pages of comments since my last visit less than 36hours ago> Hi gang! Sorry I've been MIA. Been a busy couple of days. Can't even stay at the moment, and may not be about much for the next days or so. Hope everyone's well, and I'll try to catch up with yous all when things get a little less hectic around here. Be good to each other, now.
  4. I suppose I should think about filling in the About Me section on my own profile one of these days...
  5. Good afternoon, bignick. And your return marked the first post on page 1,000 of this forum! Yay!
  6. A bit confused here.... Just asking what, Bucket?
  7. Long time since I flew with Aer Lingus. Tend to use Ryanair these days for flights within Europe. Longer flights it would depend on what carriers were available. Warning: Rude joke in spoiler tags:
  8. Sometimes I can see distinct advantages to living in Ireland...
  9. In that article, I think they were talking about the open area in the front of the offices of the firms that sell new cars. As George Bernard Shaw is reported to have said: "The English and the Americans are two peoples divided by a common language."
  10. I'm not sure if it's still the case (it probably is) but, when I was learning to drive in the UK back in 1975, if you took your test in a car with automatic transmission, you only got a licence to drive that type of car. But if you took it i a manual transmission, your licence was for either. Makes sense in a way. Although, never actually having driven an automatic, I'd say I'd have to be very careful to begin with if ever I did drive one.
  11. Similar here, Xan. Although no rain expected, just possibly a couple of showers . And your temperature probably well exceeds our 16°C (61°F)
  12. According to this report the percentage of automatic cars on the roads of Ireland during now stands at 30%. https://www.irishexaminer.com/breakingnews/motoring/motoringnews/30-of-all-new-cars-on-irish-roads-are-now-automatics-919993.html
  13. It's the opposite over here, although I think there's been an increase in automatics in recent years. Manual transmission cars used to be much more fuel efficient. If I remember correctly, they were claimed to be up to 10% more efficient. But I have read that modern automatic gearboxes are much more fuel efficient than they used to be. I'm not sure whether it's still true, but automatics used to be much more expensive to purchase over here. But that may only have been due to the fact that they were not as common.
  14. I think our friends from across the pond tend to refer it as a shift stick, clo. But, yes, I love my manual transmission. Wouldn't feel as though I was so much in control if I ever had an automatic transmission. (Why am I now expecting Bob to try to turn what I have just said into something I didn't say? )
  15. Oh, look at the page number! All the nines... (We'll soon be into four figures)
  16. Thanks. I knew it was from a Native American. Just couldn't remember who. (I first came across the quotation back around 1980 when I was a member of the Eco Party (a forerunner to the Green Party) in the UK. It was on all their literature at the time.)
  17. Apparently it's nothing more than a small amount of play on the rear right hand side brake calliper. My garage man tells me it' nothing to worry about and not dangerous in the slightest.
  18. And they'll probably need to bathe you afterwards as well. You mean you've never heard of Christmas in July?
  19. Morning, duggie.
  20. I think it's more a case of Mother Earth not deserving us. Homo sapiens is an arrogant species. We think that we can control nature. We think that we are above nature. We think that we are the dominant species. We forget that we are a part of nature. We forget that we are part of an evolutionary process. We think that the term survival of the fittest as applied to evolution does not apply to us. We stupidly think that we are the fittest. Evolution, Nature, Mother Earth may be about to prove to us just how wrong we are. Mother Earth will continue to exist. With or without us. Here's something I wrote a number of years ago: "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors. We hold it in trust for our children." /END OF RANT/
  21. Short answer: No Longer answer: I can't remember the last time I bought jam (or jelly). Home made is much more tasty (and I know what home made contains).
  22. Good night, gang. Have to be up early in the morning. My car is making some strange noises. My garage man has told me he thinks it may be something to do with the rear bushings (whatever that means). He's promised to test drive it and then put it up on the lift to see if he can find out what the real problem is, providing I get there as soon as he opens in the morning, before he starts work on cars he's already got booked in for the day. Fingers crossed it's nothing too serious.
  23. I agree with everything you say about forestry clearance, Gary. And those large tracts of natural forest should be acting as the planet's lungs. They remove carbon dioxide from the air, and replace it with oxygen. And they store vast quantities of carbon. It's not just decades. We've been mismanaging these resources for several centuries now. I'm not sure whether we will ever really learn our lesson, though. Or at least not until it is too late...
  24. Thanks for clearing that up. I learn something new every day. (And thanks to the countless others who also cleared it up for me)
