It appears Richard has lost his spine, totally. Nicholas insulted Richard's sister, insulted Harriet and blackmailed him into taking the female cousin of his date, Carrie, to the Year 11 ball. And what did Richard do?, Nothing. And what did Richard get out of this? I'm going to the ball with Nicholas. Nicholas has Richard wrapped around his little finger; I don't believe for one moment Nicholas intends for their friendship to return to its former state. He knows Richard is still besotted with him and is using this to his advantage, and will continue to do so until Richard grows a spine. The turn out for Stu and Vicky's meeting to organise a protest was very disappointing. Not one of the other attendees gave a damn about the cause.

I made the comment on a chapter of In The Barb, and it appears apropos for Bernie too @drsawzall, rectal retribution.

I recall learning of the “little death” as a euphemism for orgasm almost 50 years ago in my high school English class. If I recall correctly it was in a poem by John Donne about marital love. It may have even been in the poem which featured the line “batter my heart tree personed God” (or words to that effect). I neglected to comment above how moved I was at the joy Jo experienced in surprising Kidd with the welcome home party. He is like an innocent child, one who delights in simple pleasures which make others happy, without a mobile phone, tablet or social media account in sight.

I am thinking the abusive caller was either Uncle Buford or Cletus because of his reference to Kidd as a "ghost". In the previous chapter, the queen of the cosmetic catastrophe referred to Kidd as a "ghost" when she rang her cousin Cletus. Speaking of their familial relationship, I have to wonder how they are related. I think it is likely they are maternal cousins rather than paternal cousins as Dixie Mae may not know who Shayna's father is either. If Buford is Dixie Mae's brother, he may be the only man in Shelby who has not succumbed to her voracious appetite, although I would not lay bets on this. I found the abusive caller's hatred of anyone who is not a clone of himself painfully predictable for the most part. I was a little surprised though he had such a hatred for Jo because of his intellectual impairment, and Kidd because of his albinism. It should not be so, but I found these two examples of his hatred more repugnant than all the others. The strengthening friendship between Mannly and Kidd is a reflection of the torment each has suffered, almost certainly and the hands of the same person(s). I feel Jo will be increasingly drawn, and wholeheartedly welcomed, into this circle. @Vcs there is an Australian TV show titled 'Kath and Kim' about the exploits of a mother and daughter of the same names. It is a comedy and a total piss take on "bogan" culture. One of the favourite quotes of Kim, the daughter is, "Mum, we are effluent" (what she really means is affluent). In the case of Dixie Mae, Shayna, Uncle Buford, Jedediah and Cletus, this quote is entirely appropriate in its misquoted form.

Given Dixie Mae's penchant for a truly "religious experience" with the "little death", Reed well may have been conceived in a pew. His father unknown - I think the only thing we can assume is that it was man rather than beast (this time).

Whilst dressed in something akin to what Pete Burns, performing as International Chrysis, wore in this video. He, like Bowie, died in 2016. I like Bowie's version better, but I could not find an original video for it that I could post, most videos being for much later live performances, in which Bowie was dressed conservatively.

Believe it or not, but(t) no. @Lee Wilson's comment made me think of a song by the late, great jazz/R&B singer, Nancy Wilson. The song, An Older Man (Is Like An Elegant Wine).

I will be very "suspicious" if you introduce a new character named Rebecca or Becky for short, in the third arc of this story @Mark Ponyboy Peters.

After only two chapters I regard this story as one of your very best yet @Lee Wilson. For me, this chapter could have used a tissue warning, although some of the current symptoms are genuinely hay fever. Kurtis' discussion with his likely father, Major Greiss, moved me tremendously, even moreso because he, Major Greiss, recognised the importance of Dusty to Kurtis. He is certainly a man of action; I have no doubt Bernie aka Burnie may find himself in a spot of bother. Perhaps the Major may put Bernie on a one-way flight to Burnie in Tasmania, Australia, with no returns accepted. I hope those Wilson creative juices start bubbling aplenty so this story extends to at least 10 chapters. I cannot rate it highly enough Lee.

In recognition of your admiration for Kenny, and that is not the one from South Park, dare I say Casey and his goons have treated Levi like he was the Coward Of The County. The constant snide remarks about his "fag Dads" and referring to him as "churchie" taunting him relentlessly. In this chapter Levi emerged victorious with his head held high, the real Coward Of The County was Casey, who in defeat was still making threats, hopefully idle ones. When Levi turned around and walked away "not a Thompson boy was standing". Well done Levi; just make sure you Don't Fall In Love With A Dreamer.

She does not deserve such enjoyment @Vcs. How about tank the skank, or better still shank the skank?

Are you sure you are a gay boy? Not even one diva amongst that lot. I am aware of them all, but must confess I have never heard a song by Garth Brooks or Kenny Chesney, and have only ever heard Tim McGraw sing on his duet with Nelly Over And Over. I remember Dan Fogelberg's song Longer and vaguely remember At This Moment, but don't know the other song. I feared you were going to say you were a big Cold Chisel or Midnight Oil fan. I saw the Oil's live once with a group of friends from work. I was surprised I did not hate them. I don't recall the concert at all though.

This was the first time I had ever heard one of their songs. I had heard of them, but don't think I had ever seen them. I must have seen Ashley in magazines because I knew she was stunning, but I have never seen one of her movies or TV shows. Apart from KR, are there any other musicians you admire so much you simply must have whatever they release?

I have listened to this version several times now @Mark Ponyboy Peters and it has grown on me. Instrumentally I prefer this version, primarily because it is not ruined at the end by Eric Clapton's guitar solo, which I think is horrible and totally unsuited to the song. Initially I found Wynonna's voice really grating, shrill and overblown. It has grown on me, but I still much prefer Cher's voice, which like Wynonna's is quite nasally, but Cher's voice does not have that "twang" which Wynonna's does, which I don't like. I listened to some more songs by the Judd's hoping to hear more of Naomi, not realising Naomi never sang lead, only ever harmony or backing vocals. Oddly, I found songs which were almost blues, a hybrid of country and blues, like Born To Be Blue, more to my liking. I thought Wynonna's voice suited them really well. I still find it difficult when I look at them to believe Naomi is Wynonna's mother. She looks only slightly older than Wynonna; maybe it is due to their dramatically different size too.

Nathanial did not imagine it. Alex is a rapist and Nathanial has the scars to prove it. Alex is a CFB, but Charlie is no better. I hope Nathanial realises and soon that Charlie is also an arsehole, a user, he will take and take and take from Nathanial. Nathanial needs to get away from both of them; they are both bad news. Perhaps he should move back and live with his Dad and Joh. In fact, I wonder if a therapy dog might be good for him.

What the fuck, the rapist has come to visit. Will he deny everything and say Nathanial imagined it.

Is he Nathanial hallucinating, dreaming or is what he experienced real? An old couple dressed like they were stuck in the 1960's? Not so odd. Living in a house with no electricity? This strikes me as odd, but then I am a spoilt city dweller, so this might be realistic. I suspect, or at least I hope, the church Nathanial finds himself trying to take refuge in might be the one he was trying to access in chapter 1. This is such a well-written, riveting, upsetting, infuriating at times, but ultimately entertaining read @J92. I am somewhat disappointed it has not captured a larger audience as there is so much to enjoy, even if it is bleak.

She is grotesque, inside and outside @Doha. Dogma, hatred and make up applied with a trowel.

I greatly admire the subject, but that is still a bloody long time.
