Yes, Al, you're right. Maybe the sound of a jet engine would be a better analogy. It's just that growing up the train tracks about 100 yards away from where we'd go for lunch when I was in high school and I remember the sound the freight trains when they went by. I was reminded of that sound again when I heard a tornado years later, so that's what stuck in my mind.

I'm sure she got the information from someone that works at the college and marked her calendar in big, bold, blood red letters or symbols. She's a pip.

Yep, tornados can destroy a narrow path or a broad swath, depending on the width of the portion of the funnel that touches down, but from personal experience they sound like a train passing by when its near you.

Chapter 28 – Blow the Man Down Now that we were back from vacation, we only had a couple of days before we’d be heading back to campus. Time passed quickly for us, and after my parents got home each night, we would let them know how much we appreciated everything that we’d done over vacation. As we expected, my parents had already left for work by the time we woke up on Wednesday, so after we got dressed we hopped in the SUV and went to get something to eat. We made a quick stop so

horripilation - Word of the Day - Mon Aug 5, 2024
Bill W commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
Whether it's caused by cold, fear, or excitement, the sympathetic nervous system triggers the tiny muscles located at the base of each hair follicle, the erector pili muscles, to contract, and this causes the hair to stand on end. -

Yes, both horripilation and piloerection are commonly referred to as goose bumps or goose pimples. I wonder what causes them in the goose? -
This is a sad, yet compelling story. Carver, who seemed to be born everything, looks, brains, and talent, had his moments in the sun, when he prospered and lived in the spotlight, and his time in the shadows, when he indulged himself in the temptations that life has to offer. No matter which was the case, he knew he could always count on his childhood friend, even at the lowest points in his life. Even though Carver enjoyed some happiness when he got married and as he raised a son, he never forgot his childhood friend, who was always there for him. It didn't say how old Carver was when he died, but obviously it was much too young, but he'd lived it to the hilt, which had taken its toll. Thank you, Secret Author, for a fascinating, yet sorrowful, story.

This story definitely needs to be continued! It also left me with some questions. Since Bryce learned he had been at this location when he was seven, is it possible he might have been abducted then as well? Could these creatures have had something to do with his 'enhanced' intelligence? Or might his parents, or possibly their forebears, have even come from this other galaxy, since they are remarkably similar? After all, didn't the alien say, "which is where some of your ancestors originate from many centuries ago,"? Possibly it was only a century earlier, not many centuries, or then again it may be both. Enquiring minds want to know.

What? You listed the Secret Author stories and didn't give credit to the actual author? You're not doing your job if you didn't pry that information out of Cia. I was counting on you, Steve!

When you're young and gay, what happens when the youthful joys of your first relationship and the plans you have made together clashes with a temporary separation? What happens when you meet again? Is the spark still there? Are your plans and dreams still intact? Or is your world and happiness slowly shattered? This Secret Author crafter a wonderful, yet sad and painful account of such a relationship. Although it is sad and heart-wrenching, it is so wonderfully and skillfully written that you will identify with the anguish and despair of the protagonist during the years to come. You won't be sorry if you take the time to read the exquisite and heartfelt tale.

This is an interest and imaginative Sci-Fi story, with plenty of technical jargon for those who like those things, but more importantly there are multiple competing love stories taking place. The most important love story is the main character, Clay, and his childhood best friend, Jack, with whom he'd only recently been reunited. I find the characters to be well written and the main character to be very likeable, and the supporting cast of characters perfect for their supporting soles.

As a lover of fantasy stories, I found this compelling and intriguing. The problem is, the length. Just as I was getting into the story, it ended, but I'm guessing, and hoping, that the author intends to write more then this first part. I can't wait to see what happens next!

As a lover of fantasy stories, I find this story intriguing. However, "it was the start of our adventure in the fantastical world of Sod", then why the hell did it end. This story was short and there's plenty of room to continue, so why stop there? I want to read much, much more.

The recent Secret Author contest is a farrago of different styles and author interpretations of the theme 'Hidden'.
-
Farrago comes from the Latin word 'far', which referred to spelt, a type of grain. That term then was used to form the word 'farrago', which meant mixed fodder, or cattle feed from a mixture of grains. It was then adop ted to Englished in the mid 17th century (1600s) to mean a mixture of different things or a powdery substance. The earliest evidence of the word farrago is from 1637, in the writings of Ben Jonson, a poet and playwright.

I don't know if any of you remember this, but it happened after Cllay dismissed Rachel. When Clay had heard all he could for one night, he decided to let Max outside for a run and do what dogs need to do after eating. Clay wanted and needed to calm down, and walking Max would help him do that. When Max began barking, Clay put it down to a reaction to local wildlife. He did not notice the very brief glimmer of a slither of light and took Max back inside. When I read this part about the "glimmer of a slither of light", I was thinking it was from a cell/mobile phone and Rachel had come back to get revenge. Now I know it was from the opening of a portal, but I was still waiting for Rachel to do something nasty before she returned with her solicitor. I enjoyed this story, but I was surprised it was taking Jack and Clay so long to figure things out, but I'm glad they final did and it turned out well. I'm glad Mags and Seb worked things out as well and all the Therans are safe and happy. I also hope Clay's idea about helping the planet fix the climate crisis works, not only in the story but with the planet now. I didn't think I'd be this hot until after I died. The devil made me say that! Congratulations, Secret Author, on an enjoyable tale, but as someone else recomment, it needs a follow up to let us know how things are working out.

Now I'm glad I didn't take up the piano.

From the Greek word datkylos, which means 'finger'. In biology, dactyly is the arrangement of fingers. The term dactyl is oft en used to refer to refer to a a single digit, such as a finger or toe.
-
Many people, especially younger people, are quick to display their dactylion for everyone to see.

An archaic meaning of ebullient is boiling or angry, such as in "misted and ebullient seas" or "ebullient lava steaming down the mountainside" or "the ebullient economy economic environment has given way to high inflation, increasing interest rates, and lower savings". The first known use of the word was in the 1590s.

bibliopole - Word of the Day - Wed Jul 31, 2024
Bill W commented on Myr's blog entry in Writing World
If you buy and sell books and have that many, then you may be a bibliopole. If you merely enjoy books and collect them, that would make you a bibliophile.
