  1. Tiny droplets of cold rain began to drip from the sky, and Tchama pulled up her hood. The city streets were dark and quiet as she made her way from Auntie Peg’s home in the Spritehood, but a low noise began to rise. It sounded like a strange hum, and Tchama was almost certain she could feel the vibrations in her feet. She stopped walking and was sure that the sound was coming from the concrete below her. Tchama continued on her way and turned onto a long pathway that led beside the old ai
  2. “Who’s in there?” Eroli barked from behind Gawa, as S’Kay cautiously entered their hidden hideout. “Oh,” S’Kay exclaimed in surprise, “it’s you!” Gawa was clambering through the entrance behind her and declared, “I can’t tell who it is.” She then also saw the unexpected guest. “What are you doing here?” Gawa asked. S’Kay added, “How did you even find this place?” “Who is it?!” Eroli snapped at the others as he entered. He came to a halt, face to face with Lahari
  3. Dozi ran through the Shifton streets away from the violence in Gate Town. She abandoned the battle as soon as the fighting began. Her pulse raced, and her breathing was shallow. Tears streamed down her cheeks from the shock of it all. She did not want to die. “Fucking Messiahs,” she growled between her panting breaths. At the start of the chaos, a giant chunk of masonry soared through the air and smashed into a man who was standing beside Dozi, crushing him like an insect. Speckles
  4. Vion wielded a sword. Chenchi gripped a club. They stood with 39 other Messiahs at the border to Gate Town. There was no sneak attack this time; they were bringing war to their sworn enemies. The night was cold and dark, and the winter sun was still hours from sliding above the horizon and spreading its light over the two angry crowds. Countless voices, shouting at and over each other formed a raucous chorus that only further built the tension. Vion glared across at th
  5. “Making jewelry sounds like a lot of fun,” Tchama said to Auntie Peg. The two of them were at the front of her shop. “But I told Dozi and Ilya that I would join them with the resistance. Oh, and Peggy, you should be there too, since you’re a Messiah!” Auntie Peg cringed and looked over at Ninyani with an expression of severe concern on her face. She was yet to tell him about her past, or that she was an ex-Messiah, and she worried about his reaction. However, the boy was unfamiliar with Me
  6. ❤️ Ninyani is going to be living with the mystic, Theolan, and Lahari for a while, and not to give too much of a spoiler, but in book 3 Auntie Peg is in a relationship with another drag queen, so Ninyani has a lot of positive influences in his young life 😍
  7. S’Kay, Gawa, and Eroli headed through the darkness onto the old Oselian airstrip near their secret hideout. “We should be in Shifton!” Eroli declared. “They need our help!” Gawa wore a look of concern on her face. The patterns that rippled across her skin moved in an unnerving way. “I’m worried about the resistance.” “They can take care of themselves,” S’Kay replied in an icy voice. “But we started all of this,” Eroli mumbled miserably. “Yes,” S’Kay agreed, as sh
  8. “Dozi, wake up,” whispered a voice. Dozi sat up with a start. Tchama was kneeling beside her bed, right in front of Dozi’s face. “I’m sorry to wake you,” Tchama said quickly, “but the Shifton neighborhood watch needs volunteers right now! The Messiahs are back, and they are threatening violence, but there’s a huge crowd standing against them. The night’s watch is leading the resistance, and they want whoever else they can get.” Dozi looked over at Ilya. She was already aw
  9. After the fundraiser, it was late, and Auntie Peg brought Ninyani back to her home that was above her shop in the Spritehood. The mystic and Tchama both left earlier in the evening, but Ninyani wanted to stay to the very end of the event. Auntie Peg was happy to stick around with him, and she told the mystic that Ninyani could stay with her for the night. The next morning, she asked him, “How would you feel about hanging out with me today? I suspect the boys will be helping with the injure
  10. The Principal Messiah glared at the officer who delivered the news. “What do you mean the Spritehood warehouse was destroyed?” she asked through gritted teeth. It was barely sunrise. “Affirmative, milady,” the man said in a shaky voice. “We can’t tell what happened, but the building collapsed.” “Was there anything of value in it?” The man sucked air between his lips. “Well, it all had value, milady.” She snapped her reply at him. “Was anything important destroyed?!”
  11. The dead of night was upon the land, and Teshon City was quiet. “There it is,” S’Kay said, and she pointed. Gawa squinted through the darkness. “That’s it?” “You’ll see,” S’Kay replied. The trio crept up to the side of a building, and they peered inside through the cloudy glass of an old window. Crates lined the walls and several large objects that were covered in tarps stood in the middle of the space. “How did you find this place?” Eroli asked. “I first f
  12. The winter sun was already ducking behind the jagged horizon of the inland mountains, when Auntie Peg heard a knock on the door to the front of her shop. She often locked up early during the shorter days of the cold season, and there was an event in the evening that she was looking forward to attending. She stepped out from behind her counter, approached the door, and she saw Tchama’s smiling face through the window. Auntie Peg opened the door and the young woman asked, “What does all seco
  13. As the rising sun glittered on the ocean, Dozi made her way with Ilya and Tchama into Gate Town. The city’s emergency bells rang for over an hour, but now it was quiet. Entering the quiet neighborhood to the sounds of crackling fires was eerie. A few structures were still smoking but no longer in flames, and a group of people was almost in control of another burning building. Down a side street, they heard a voice call out to the gathered crowd. A woman was standing at a podium. “G
  14. The winter dawn began to illuminate through a gap in the clouds on the eastern horizon. Its light shimmered across the sea. The rest of the sky was overcast. Gawa, Eroli, and S’Kay made their way along dark alleys and kept to the shadows where they could. The heavy cloaks that they wore helped conceal each of their unique appearances and prevented them from attracting attention to themselves. They approached the entrance to Gate Town, rounded a corner, and were startled to see an ominous or
  15. Vion and his two inquisitors rushed through the dark city streets of the industrial district. The Principal Messiah sent word for the trio to hold on their attack and report to the temple at once, but as they turned the corner that led to the Messiah Tower, they were surprised to see a crowd in front of it. Several heavily armed guards blocked the way, but they nodded Vion and his officers through the perimeter. They saw the Principal Messiah kneeling beside four more corpses. “Curse these
  16. With the winter sun already at its zenith, Dozi and the group from Teshon City with the addition of Ninyani turned their backs on Bluewood Village. They started the long journey south along the Pinewood path. The mountain air was cold but no wind blew against the travelers. Ninyani left his home in Frostflower without any possessions save for the clothes on his back, but he did not require anything extra for the trip. His garments from the far north were more than sufficient against the we
  17. wow, bringing back the beginning! 💀 Thank you! you're totally right! and i don't want to say much and spoil the surprises that are coming...
  18. “We’re going back out tonight,” S’Kay declared as she slipped over the concrete barrier with Gawa and Eroli. They dropped down to the old Oselian airfield, ducked past the caution signs, and entered their underground hideout. The sun was yet to rise. “No, we can’t,” Eroli retorted. “It’s too soon.” “I don’t know what your resistance is,” S’Kay said with a frown, “but hear me out, because I refuse to stop. I want to kill as many cannibals as we can, and I think we need to do it
  19. As the evening’s early winter sunset began to steal the light from Teshon City, the Principal Messiah was with Vion and his two lieutenants in front of the west dormitory. They huddled together in the glow of a single lamp surrounded by the oncoming darkness. “Since the bodies inside,” the Principal Messiah declared, “are in the same three conditions as the first murder scene, I presume that we are dealing with a trio of very powerful Shifts who are going around and murdering our brethre
  20. "Burn up the dance floor!" 😂 That's so good!
  21. “What’s an icewyrm?” Ninyani asked the mystic. “I’m not actually sure,” he replied to the boy. He was packing his and Theolan’s possessions into their travel bags. “It seems to be some sort of reptile from the mountains that comes down to take children.” “Oh, you mean a crystal dragon!” Ninyani replied with a smile. He was delighted to know something that the man did not. The night before, the mystic and Theolan did not ask Ninyani many questions. They sat with him while he
  22. Ah, that's an interesting question, because when a Shift or Bio-Shift dies, their photonova gland never decomposes. However, when a Messiah consumes a photonova gland, it disintegrates to its molecular elements and fuses with their bodies. That's what gives them their strength, but it's also what leads to yet another group of strange and twisted characters, one of whom Vion gets to glimpse in a few chapters... Book Three has many of the bizarre monstrosities.
  23. wow! well-remembered about the captured Bio-Shift!
  24. “We’re going to do it again,” said S’Kay, and her feathers fluttered. “The three of us were magical the first time,” Gawa added in a fawning tone. The mineral-rippled patterns flowed across her unique skin. “I can’t wait until Tualu gets here so that we can start,” Eroli added. He was feeling much more enthusiastic, now that the moment was upon them. “Ah-ha, Tualu! There he is!” Gawa, Eroli, and S’Kay were in a section of the underground that was still accessible. Warning sig
