I've always used the two terms interchangeably. Perhaps incorrect on my part, but I'm pretty sure I've encountered additional places where that is true.

I know what you mean. You get so into some of them, they seem almost real to you. There are actually a few in finished stories, I kind of miss and am considering revisiting.
