    Chapter 7

“James!” my mother shouted from her office when I returned home from the nursing home. “I want to see you a minute.” “Yes, Mom?” I asked as I entered and took a seat in a chair beside her desk. She looked at me over the top of her glasses. “How was your day?” she inquired. “Did Mr. Wilbur take you for any more money?” I reached in my pocket and pulled out the remaining money I had. She looked at me and smiled. “Are you going to continue to let that elderly gentleman keep taking y

    Chapter 6

On Monday during second period, Mr. Marshall called me to the office. I had not gotten into any trouble since the incident with Mrs. Horner, so I had no idea why he wanted to see me. When I entered the office, the secretary pointed to his office. He was sitting at his desk talking on the phone. He motioned for me to have a seat. I waited several minutes while he talked to an angry parent. From what I gathered from the one-sided conversation, their daughter had been suspended for fighting on

    Chapter 5

“So, you and your mom finally kissed and made up?” Jackie asked as we sat in the cafeteria eating lunch Monday morning. “We made up, Smart Ass,” I replied smugly, “but we didn’t kiss. I’ll let you do that.” “Ew.” She wriggled her nose, “That’s gross. I ain’t a lezzie.” “I don’t know,” I shot back. “When’s the last time you had a date. No wait. When did you ever have a date?” “You have a lot of room to talk,” she responded. “You’ve never been on a date, either.” “I’m not

    Chapter 4

Dion Washington! She said her son was Dion. It couldn’t be possible. I had just finished serving detention with him, and now I had to spend my Saturdays being treated rudely. “What’s the matter, Dear?” I guess she noticed the astonished look on my face. “Dion is your son?” I managed to stammer out. “Why yes,” she replied. “Do you know him?” “Yes, Nurse Dorothy,” I answered. “We just got through spending a week of detention with Mr. Marshall.” “So you’re the James he spea

    Chapter 3

I walked cautiously into my mother’s office. She pointed for me to sit at a chair next to her. Her desk was stacked high with papers, magazines and folders. I don’t know how she manages to keep track of things. She rummaged around her desk for a moment, and then handed me a piece of paper. “Here,” she said. “What is it?” I asked. I looked down and saw an address and time. 2286 Walnut Ave. Saturday 7:00 AM “I don’t understand. What does this mean?” I looked at her, but she was

    Chapter 2

When I went downstairs the next morning, my mother was sitting at the kitchen table drinking a cup of coffee and reading the newspaper. Janet was eating a bowl of cereal. She looked up when I entered, but then she looked down and continued eating. At least Janet looked at me. My mother’s eyes never left the newspaper. I looked at the seat where I normally sit. Usually, there is a bowl of cereal and a glass of milk. It was empty. I sighed, walked over to the cabinet and took out a glass and

    Chapter 1

@weinerdog@drsawzall @Al Norris I have the utmost respect for teachers, and I would never want to denigrate such a noble profession. In the real world, Mrs. Horner would be fired. I removed that scene from the story. It is surprising that no reader brought it to my attention when I originally wrote this story. We are more disapproving of inappropriate behavior and bullying today. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

    Chapter 1

I can’t believe I’ve been assigned detention! Me, James Hoskins. I’ve never done a bad thing in school in my life- until today. It’s all Jackie’s fault. She just had to make that stupid face in Mrs. Horner’s class while she was in the middle of a lecture. I really didn’t care that Robert E. Lee turned Abraham Lincoln down as being head of the Union Army, just because he was from Virginia. That happened like over 150 years ago. Who cares? But Jackie looking over at me, crossing her eyes
  9. Love takes off the masks that we fear that we cannot live without and know that we cannot live within. -James Baldwin At sixteen, James has an almost perfect life. Then two boys enter his life and turn it upside down. Dion is a shy boy who James can't understand. Donovan is the star basketball player who James admires. Read how an incident with one boy will bring him closer to the other as masks are slowly removed.

    Chapter 20

We are aware wherever we go of our surroundings. There have been many instances where we have entered a restaurant, store, etc. and didn't feel comfortable and left. Especially since Tony may be the only black person. We have never experienced a real problem, but there is always that first time, especially in the climate we live today. We were racially profiled once. I ran a red light and was pulled over. Two officers came to the car, one on each side. By their questions I knew they suspected that Tony was a drug dealer, and I had picked him up for a drug transaction. They were at first very rude, and I was expecting them to ask us to exit the car and search it. After running a check, they realized we lived together. When he returned, he was friendlier- after handing me my ticket. Like Parker and Darius, Tony and I also knew from the start that we were soulmates. We met on a Friday night, and he moved in with me on Monday. We're now happily married. I also want to mention that the beating of Myles was based on a real-life experience. Tony had a good friend in high school. He was gay and very effeminate. Late one night, he was walking down the street when he was approached by a group of men. There was an exchange of words, and they violently beat him and left him dead on the street.
  12. I awoke Tuesday morning more tired than when I fell asleep. My mind was wracked with pain. Not from my concussion, but from everything that happened the past few days. Dad came into my room and woke me. He shook my shoulder gently and said, “You have to get up, Parker. You have to be at the doctor’s office at nine.” I had forgotten that I had a doctor’s appointment. He was going to check me out, and then I would be able to return to school. I had been anticipating returning to school,

    Chapter 19

@BeaglePuppy I agree completely with you, and I'm glad you brought it up. I've attended several balloon launches like these, and as I watch them disappear into the air, I wonder if they do kill a bird, wrap around a power line or drop into someone's lawn and do damage. For that reason, I never release one myself. What is even worse are the ones propelled by a candle. They are larger and can create more damage.
  14. Natalie rushed across the room and fell into my arms. “Oh, my God, Parker,” she cried. I’ve been so worried about you. No one would tell me where you were until I got a call from your attorney.” She then turned and embraced Darius and held him tightly. She pulled away and asked, “Would you tell me what is going on? All I know is what I’m seeing on the news.” I looked over at Darius. “Can we tell you later? We’re both still pretty upset over what happened.” I smiled and asked, “Did you bring

    Chapter 18

Because these events happen in the real world. It can sometimes be an ugly place. Every day a gay, lesbian, trans or poc is beaten because of who they are. Lives are ruined and turned upside down. Not all stories have happy endings, just like in life.
  16. The restaurant where Myles wanted ice cream was in downtown Rosemont. It was located on the corner with a bright sign flashing ‘Dewey’s Ice Cream Parlor.’ Darius parked a block away, and we walked to the restaurant. I was worried because Myles and Peter were holding hands. Besides a few small stores and the ice cream parlor, there were residential homes. People were sitting on their porches at several of the homes enjoying a warm evening. An elderly couple scowled when we passed their home.

  18. We were about finished eating when Darius’ cellphone rang. “Hello?” he asked. Suddenly, a concerned look appeared on his face. “What’s happened, Dad?” He listened a few seconds, closed his phones and gave me a worried look. I asked, “What’s wrong?” “I’m not sure,” he replied. “Dad wants me to come home right away. He says something is going on, but he wouldn’t tell me what.” He motioned Sheila to the table and asked for our checks. He rose, handed me a ten and asked me to pay for his m
  19. I awoke the next morning feeling better than I had for a few days. My head was no longer hurting, and I could stand up without getting dizzy. I took a shower and headed downstairs for breakfast. Dad said I couldn’t go back to school until Tuesday after meeting with Dr. Cunningham. My appointment was at nine, so hopefully I could be back at school in time for lunch. No one was home when I entered the kitchen. Mom had left a note on the counter reminding me to take my medication. I wanted to
  20. Darius kissed me again. I don’t think he was even aware that anyone else was in the room. Tears filled his eyes as he looked down worriedly at me. “Are you hurt badly?” he asked as he brushed back my hair. “I’m okay,” I assured him as I glanced over at my mother and father. Dad was smiling, but Mom had a concerned look on her face. Pastor Moore and his wife stepped up to the bed. Darius’ mother took his arm and held him. “We heard what happened,” said Pastor Moore as he looked over at
  21. Before leaving his room, Darius stopped at the door, turned and asked, “Do I look okay?” I kissed him and replied, “You look great.” “No,” he stammered, “Dad won’t be able to tell what we’ve done, will he?” I giggled and said, “I promise I won’t tell.” He looked at my hair and told me to fix it. I stepped over and looked in a mirror. It was slightly messy. I used my fingers to comb it into place, turned and asked him how I looked. He still appeared very nervous. “Are you okay
  22. Sheila walked up to the table and took Darius’ order. When she left, he said to Myles, “You could have waited for me to get here before you ordered.” “I’m hungry,” replied Myles as he rubbed his stomach. “Besides, we didn’t know how long you would be in your meeting. What was it about?” Darius looked at me and replied, “We’re trying to decide how to get Andrews and that Sheriff Morgan fired. Andrews will be easy since we have the tape, but it might be harder to get Morgan.” He took a s
  23. I awoke early the next morning. It was Monday, and I hadn’t been in school for several days. I knew Nettleman would be waiting for me to do something again. I had attended school for twelve years, and I had never once been in trouble. Now, Nettleman would be watching me so he could suspend me again. I had to be careful. I would be graduating in a few months, and I had to keep my grades up. I still had my application in at a couple of universities, and I couldn’t risk a bad report on my record.
  24. As I backed out of Darius’ driveway, he watched and smiled. He waved as I headed down the street. He had kissed me. I should have been excited, but instead I was filled with fear. I realized that kiss could drastically change my life. My world wasn’t ready to accept that. My mother and father would approve, although it would come with a list of caveats. Other than Natalie and a few friends who attended the meeting tonight, no one else would approve. And I know very little about Darius. His
  25. Thank you, Cia, for featuring 'Stuff People Do' this month. This is an important story about gay conversion therapy. I heard from readers from all over the world who had experienced it. Perhaps, it happened to someone here at GA. I'll be following this post, and if anyone has any comments or questions, feel free to jump in. -Ronyx
