Also, don't forget to give your teddy a big hug and apologize for all the rough housing your poor teddy bear may have had to go through in your childhood. Teddy Roosevelt Thought to have been created in the early 20th century, this iconic toy owes its name to American President Theodore Roosevelt, who was lovingly called Teddy by his family and friends. The story of why the toy came to be named after him dates back to a hunting trip in 1902 when Roosevelt refused to shoot an injured bear. Rumor has it that in response, Morris Michtom, a candy store owner in New York displayed two stuffed bears made by his wife in his display window and called them Teddy's bear. Children's Books Heros Today teddy bears are a popular toy for children of all ages. The stuffed toy has also become a part of children's literature and movies and popular culture. Some famous teddy bears include Paddington Bear, Winnie-the-Pooh, Corduroy, the Berenstain Bear family and Fozzie Bear. How to Celebrate? If you have toys from your childhood stored away in the attic or the garage, today is the day to take out all your teddy bears and show them some love. If you are looking to make space, why not take them to a local charity shop where they can be cleaned and given to children who need them? If you have children in your life, surprise them with their own teddy bear to cuddle with. Watch TV shows and movies that feature a teddy bear. Learn about the habitat and life of bears. Did You Know… …that the collective noun for bears is sleuth? A group of bears is called a sleuth or a sloth. In the same way that the word “long” becomes “length” or the word “moon” becomes month, the old-fashioned –th added to an adjective form a noun. Sloth or sleuth originates from the adjective slow, and although bears are not particularly known for being the slowest animals, it could have originated from their habit of hibernation or from their habit of appearing like they are constantly in search of something – hence the word sleuth, which also means detective. A group of bear cubs is called a litter. *** Feeling sick, my sister grabbed the thermometer from the medicine cabinet and popped it into her mouth. “Uh, Julie, that’s the dog’s thermometer,” said my mother. Julie spit it out. “Ewww, was that in Fitzie’s mouth?!” Mum hesitated before replying, “Not exactly.” *** I was really pleased with my purchase of a new pair of shoes from a major retailer. About a week later, on a rainy day, I was in a rush and quickly grabbed my shoes from the rack and made my way into town. To my horror, I felt a wet sensation inside my right shoe – it was leaking. I returned to the shop to complain about the leaking right shoe. At customer service, the assistant looked at both shoes and said, “Yes, sir, you’re correct – the right shoe leaks, but unfortunately only the left shoe was bought from this store.” My apology was as swift as my departure. *** A vacuum cleaner salesman knocks on the door of an old lady’s house. The lady takes one look at him and says, “You are wasting your time, I have no money,” and tries to close the door. Quick as a flash the salesman jams his foot in the door. He then tips a big pile of horse manure on her carpet and says “If I don’t clean all this up, I’ll eat the rest.” The old lady says “Fine. But my power was cut off this morning, so let me get you a fork.” *** While at a convention, Bill, Jim and Scott shared a hotel suite on the 75th floor. After a long day of meetings, they were shocked to find that the hotel elevators were broken and that they’d have to take the stairs all the way up to their room. “I have a way to break the monotony,” said Bill. “I’ll tell jokes for 25 flights, Jim can sing songs for the next 25, and Scott can tell sad stories the rest of the way.” As they started climbing, Bill told his first joke. At the 26th floor, Jim began to sing. At the 51st floor, it was Scott’s turn. “I will tell my saddest story first,” he said. “Once there was a man who left the room key in the car.” *** Hear about the statistician

Like almost all professions, telephone services began as a man's world. The first telephone operators were all men, though very soon managers and customers realized that they were often impatient and rude with their customers. To avoid more unhappy customers, the Edwin Holmes Telephone Dispatch Company in Boston, Massachusetts decided to hire women. So on September 1, 1878 Alexander Graham Bell himself appointed Emma as the world's first female telephone operator. Her trailblazing career lasted for almost 35 years. Pioneering Women Emma's appointment was pathbreaking in many ways. She spearheaded a drastic change in the face and the tone of the telecommunications industry in the United States - by the mid 1900s, a majority of telephone operators in the country were women. Additionally, her employment strengthened the slowly pervading notion that women could work outside their homes and also contribute to the society and economy. Other annual holidays that celebrate pioneering women around the world include Helen Keller Day, The Duchess Who Wasn’t Day, Frankenstein Day, Ada Lovelace Day, and Jane Addams Day. How to Celebrate? Like Emma, there are many other women who paved the path for future generations of girls to opt for careers and professions generally only reserved for men. Learn about their lives and their contribution to the society. Read more about the telephone industry and the science behind telecommunications. Pick up the phone and call the women who inspire you, and let them know that they are your role models. Did You Know… …that Emma Nutt and her sister Stella were the world's first sister duo to work as telephone operators? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ No Rhyme or Reason Day September 1 is No Rhyme or Reason Day. The unofficial holiday is dedicated to the English language idiom, no rhyme or reason, which means something that occurs without any purpose or explanation. The idiom is thought to have first found its way in the English language through the 1460 book The Boke of Nurture by John Russell, though it is most famous for its appearance in the 1590 Shakespearean play Comedy of Errors. It once again showed up in Shakespeare's 1600 play, As You Like It. The holiday is also known in the United States as National No Rhyme or Reason Day or National No Rhyme (Nor Reason) Day. How to Celebrate? Do you need a rhyme or a reason to celebrate this fun holiday? Here are some ways you can honor this expression: What about celebrating this holiday by tapping into your creative side? Spend the day writing free verse - poetry without any rhyme. Have a no rhyming contest with a friend or a co-worker. Find words that do not rhyme with anything else. Whoever finds the most words wins a copy of a thesaurus or a dictionary! Do something nice for someone for no rhyme or reason. Sometimes the most generous gestures are the ones that are undertaken without any cause or purpose. Did You Know... ...that in literature and poetry, words that are spelled similarly but pronounced differently are called eye rhymes? *** A man vacations on a tropical
island, and the first thing he hears
is drums. He goes to the beach
and hears the drums; he eats lunch, he hears the drums; he tries to sleep, he can’t—drums. Finally he storms over to the manager. “I’ve had it! On this day, honor all the bookworms and book lovers in your life. If you are a book lover yourself, then treat yourself to some quality reading time. Book Lovers Day is also known as National Book Lovers Day in the United States. Stress Reducing Studies have shown that reading can not only be entertaining, but can also have many health benefits. Reading helps reduce stress, keeps the brain sharp, and can help you sleep better. Scientists have also found that those who read are much more likely to be empathic and understanding of others. How to Celebrate? Buy the book lover in your life gifts only a book lover would appreciate. Some ideas include: an e-reader, a first edition or a signed book, tea, a bookmark, or a bookshelf to accommodate their ever-growing book collection. If you are a book lover, take the day to show your books some love. Clean your bookshelves and rearrange your books – may we recommend by color? Get into your most comfortable clothes, curl up on your couch with a cup of hot tea, and take yourself on a great adventure with your favorite book. What about throwing a book themed party? Have everyone wear costumes from their favorite books and serve food featured in some of your favorite books. For example, serve tea and scones for an Alice in Wonderland themed party or apple pie and ice cream if Jack Kerouac is your favorite author. Visit your local library. If you don't have a library card, maybe it is time you get one. Encourage the children and young adults in your life to read. It is unclear whether the unknown creators of this holiday wanted it to be a day for people to honor their female friends or for them to celebrate their female romantic partners. Either way, take this day to tell the special women in your life that they mean a lot to you, and that you love, honor, and respect them. The term girlfriend first came into use in 1863 as a way to describe a woman's female friend in youth. It was not until the 1920s when the word started being used as a way to describe a person's female romantic partner. How to Celebrate? While we think that every day of the year should be your girlfriend's day, Girlfriend's Day is a good excuse to do something extra special for that extraordinary woman in your life. Here are some ways you can celebrate this day: Do something special for your partner to show them how much you care and love them. Maybe surprise your partner with a gift and dinner? Or take them out to see their favorite band perform or arrange for a romantic lunch picnic in the park. Don’t have a partner? The day also commemorates the first time the Kremer Prize was awarded in 1977. The prize is awarded to people who pioneer human powered flight. Human powered flights are aircraft that use human muscle power to run. Due to technological issues - they are unable to fly for long distances or for a considerable amount of time - human powered flights are usually flown for experimental and recreational purposes. The first authenticated human powered flight that was successful in taking off and flying for a significant distance took place in 1961. Derek Piggott, a glider pilot in the British Royal Air Force flew Southampton University's Man Powered Aircraft on November 9, 1961, for about 600 meters. Running Away The holiday is a play on the English language phrase run like the wind, which means to run very fast. It is sometimes used in the context of running away from someone or something - the 1980 song Ride Like the Wind, by American singer-songwriter Christopher Cross, recounts the story of an outlaw who runs away to Mexico to avoid punishment. Ride like the wind is also sometimes used to refer to the act of doing things without purpose. Just like the wind can change direction at any time, someone riding like the wind can change the course of their lives without any warning and do things without any rhyme or reason. How to Celebrate? Learn more about the history and science of human powered flight. Take flying lessons and ride like the wind. Take your bike out for a spin and feel the wind in your hair. The unofficial holiday encourages participants to share their funniest and sidesplitting jokes with the world. While the origins of this rib-tickling holiday are unknown, one can assume that its creators wanted people to spread cheer, laughter, and happiness by telling jokes to everyone they meet. A joke is a written or spoken narrative that entertains, amuses, or generates laughter among readers or listeners. Creating Ties Humans have been telling jokes for a large part of their history. According to historians, the oldest recorded joke can be traced back to the ancient Sumerians in 1900 BC. Anthropological studies have shown that laughter evolved as a way for humans to signal friendship and as a way to create and strengthen ties with a group. How to Celebrate? They say laughter is the best medicine, so make people around you laugh out loud by telling them jokes. Organize a joke contest at work – the best joke wins a gag prize. Celebrate this unofficial holiday of unknown origins by eating as much vanilla ice cream as you want without any guilt. Made by freezing a custard of cream or milk, sugar, eggs, and vanilla beans or flavoring, vanilla ice cream is the most popular flavor of ice cream in the United States and Canada according to some surveys. Recognizable Flavor Vanilla is a flavoring that comes from the pods of the fruit of the vanilla orchid. A native plant of Mexico, vanilla was unknown to the world outside Central America until the late 1600s. Today, it is one of the world's most recognized flavors. The expression, plain vanilla, is used to refer to something that is commonplace and does not have any special or distinguishing characteristics. Vanilla Ice Cream Day is also sometimes known as National Vanilla Ice Cream Day in the US. How to Celebrate? Do we need to say anything else other than it's Vanilla Ice Cream Day! Eat as much ice cream as you can possibly eat. Having pancakes for breakfast? Add a dollop of vanilla ice cream with it. Brownies for dinner? Add a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Smoothies for an after workout snack? Add a few scoops of vanilla ice cream. Well, you get our point. Did You Know… …that vanilla is thought to be the world's second most expensive spice? Chapter 23

Friday was the last day of term. At school it was a mufti day with fun activities for the students which meant that there was no problem getting Ollie off to school. We received a phone call from Harold and Marjorie. They were of a generation that still liked to use their smart phones to make phone calls rather than send text messages. They asked about William and said how gorgeous he looked on the quilt and insisted the quilt had to be for him. They also said we could keep the other t

Where are they now?” “I put them in the bag with the other stuff I bought,” he said. “They should still be in the bag with the new clot

The day aims to encourage people to spread cheer and goodwill by opening up channels of communication and by focusing on the good in everyone. Also known as National Say Something Nice Day, this unofficial holiday is said to have originated in Charleston, South Carolina. According to some, the originators of the holiday were inspired by Mitchell Carnell's book, Say Something Nice - Be a Lifter @ Work. The book inspires people to be lifters. A lifter is someone who is positive and always says something nice to whoever they meet. The book inspires people to lift others up, not put them down. Spread Happiness The message of the day is that positivity goes a long way in spreading happiness and joy. When we are kind in our interactions with others, we receive positivity and kindness back. This enriches our lives, makes us happy, and keeps us healthy. Studies have shown that happy people are healthier and live longer. How to Celebrate? Celebrate the day by saying something nice to everyone you meet. Remember, if you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all. Put aside your petty enmities with people and use this day to try and see the positive in people you usually do not like. Leave a nice note or do something nice for a friend, family member, or co-worker. Bottom line: just be nice to friends, foes, and strangers alike, and you will notice that you feel much better about yourself! He replied, "You did." *** It was my friend's first camping trip with her husband, and they were lost. He tried all the usual tactics to determine direction—moss on the trees (there was none), direction of the sun (it was overcast), and so on. Just as she began to panic, he spotted a cabin in the distance. "This way," he said as he led her back to their camp. "How did you do that?" my friend asked. "Simple. So, take out your old typewriter from the attic, dust it and get started on your magnum opus! A typewriter is a mechanical device that allows users to type directly on a sheet of paper. While many people had been working on different prototypes of typewriters before 1868, Christopher Latham Sholes' typewriter was the first one to be commercially marketed. Known as the Sholes and Glidden typewriter or the Remington 1 typewriter, the device could only type uppercase letters. Revolutionary Device Typewriters revolutionized the world of communications. Letters and correspondences looked more professional, followed a consistent format, and were more legible when typed out on a typewriter compared to handwritten communications that dominated the workplace in the past. In addition to creating an efficient and more organized workspace, the use of typewriters in businesses and governments worldwide meant that typing became a required skill for many jobs. A large percentage of these jobs were administrative in nature and were usually done by women, who were specifically hired for their typing skills - the typewriter played a very important role in opening up workspaces for women. How to Celebrate? Organize a typewriting contest – whoever types the fastest and with the least number of errors wins. Show your typewriter pride by wearing typewriter-shaped jewelry. Avoid using your computer and email, type letters and send them in the post or mail. Did You Know… …that most typewriters and computers today share the same keyboard layout? *** The computer in my high school classroom was acting up. After watching me struggle with it, a student explained that my hard drive had crashed. So I called IT. "Can someone look at my computer?" I asked. "The hard drive crashed." "We can't just send people down on your say-so," said the specialist. "How do you know that's the problem?" "A student told me." "We'll send someone right over." *** When our client's dog lapped up anti-freeze, the veterinarian I work for ordered a unique treatment: an IV drip mixing fluids with vodka. "Go buy the cheapest bottle you can find," he told me. At the liquor store, I was uneasy buying cheap booze so early in the day, and I felt compelled to explain things to the clerk. "Believe it or not," I said, "this is for a sick dog." As I was leaving, the next customer plunked down two bottles of muscatel and announced, "These are for my cats." *** While visiting a retirement community, my wife and I decided to do some shopping and soon became separated. "Excuse me," I said, approaching a clerk. "I'm looking for my wife. She has white hair and is wearing white shoes." Gesturing around the store, the clerk responded, "Take your pick." *** When my very pregnant niece, a sergeant in the New York Army National Guard, accidentally knocked over a glass of water, one of her soldiers volunteered to help clean it up. As he was mopping up the mess, an officer walked in. "Private, what's going on in here?" he asked. To the officer's horror, the private replied, "Sir, the sergeant's water broke, and I'm helping her clean up." *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** sandrewn

The unofficial holiday also encourages people to let go of all the remaining single socks they are collecting in hopes of finding their partners one day. There are few mysteries in life that are as perplexing as the mystery of the missing sock. No matter how hard you try to keep pairs of socks together, invariably one of them ventures out into the netherworld never to be found again. Lost Sock Memorial Day is a day to honor all those disappeared socks. How to Celebrate Throw out all the single leftover socks. Use the leftover socks as cleaning cloths. Or spend the day making sock monkeys out of the socks that have sadly lost their partners to the sock blackhole. Have a minute of silence for all the socks you have lost. Did You Know… ...that the feet have about 250,000 sweat glands that are capable of producing about 1 cup of sweat a day? ~~~~~~~ Europe Day May 9 is celebrated as Europe Day in the European Union (E.U.) and around the world. The holiday commemorates the day in 1950 when French foreign minister, Robert Schuman, presented his proposal to create an organization of European countries. Also sometimes known as Schuman Day, the day aims to garner continuing support for the European Union and to educate citizens in member states and people in the rest of the world about the benefits of such an organization. How to Celebrate? If you live in a member country or are visiting one, this is the time to visit European Union institutions. EU institutions in Brussels and Strasbourg hold open days where they organize public outreach events. Other E.U. countries and cities hold festivals, concerts, and other events to raise awareness about the E.U. If you don’t live in an EU member state, do not despair - you can learn more about the E.U. in many other ways. Find out if the E.U. expat community in your city is having public events that you can attend. And if there is nothing going on, remember that Europe Day is at its heart a day to celebrate peace and unity, and you don’t have to be in the European Union to do that! The unofficial holiday celebrates and honors one of the world's most well-known comic book superhero. While the origins of this holiday are unknown, the general consensus is that the day commemorates the date in 1939 when the crime fighter made his debut in the Detective Comics Batman is a fictional superhero created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger and published by DC Comics. The superhero who made his first appearance in May 1939 is also sometimes known as The Dark Knight and the Caped Crusader. His real name, however, is Bruce Wayne, a billionaire who wears a bat costume while combating crime in the fictional Gotham City. How to Celebrate? Like us, most you of you probably do not need an excuse to revisit your favorite Batman comics, but if you do, today is a good day to do some marathon Batman comic reading. Wear a cape and go to work in your Batman costume. Watch any of the several Batman movies out there with family and friends. Maybe you could combine it with a Batman themed costume party? Tell all your guests to come dressed as a Batman comics character. Did You Know… …that Melbourne, Australia was very briefly called Batmania? It was named after explorer John Batman. *** One day my three-year-old daughter asked when her birthday was. Knowing that the date, April 14, would mean nothing to her, I said, "It's either just before or just after Easter." "Great," she said. "You don't know when my birthday is either." *** The wheel of my grocery cart was making a horrible scraping sound as I rolled it through the supermarket. Nevertheless, when I finished my shopping and saw a cartless woman, I offered it up, explaining, "It makes an awful noise, but it works." "That's okay," she said, taking it. "I have a husband at home like that." *** I was sprawled on the living-room couch watching my favorite show on the Food Network when my husband walked in. "Why do you watch those food shows?" he asked. "You don't even cook." Glaring back at him, I asked, "Then why do you watch football?" *** My daughter and her husband, naval reservists, have an eight-year-old son. When one of his parochial school classmates told my daughter that Angus had said a bad word, she said, "He can't help it. Both his parents are sailors." *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** (1918) *** ( WOW ) *** ( WOW again ) *** ( WOW ouch, WOW ouch ouch ouch ) *** *** *** *** *** sandrewn
