It's springtime in the mighty Andiol Empire. Despite the apparent tranquillity and prosperity, all is not well in the realm. There is a never-ending war on the eastern border, the power-hungry Shadow Cross is plotting, and the emperor has not been seen in public for years. And something far more dangerous is quietly gathering strength.

Meanwhile, 16-year-old Josel and his friends are leading normal young lives in their hometown Paidos, in the peaceful south of Andiol. But a dark shadow hangs over the town, and strange secrets creep into Josel's life. Suddenly, Paidos is no longer a safe place to live, and Josel finds himself on the run.

The riverboat takes the travellers to the town of Five Hills, the headquarters known as Castle Cache. There, Zal Fizol tries once more to make his old adversaries realise the danger they face. As the web of intrigue grows ever tighter, Josel finds himself a mere pawn in a much bigger game. When old grudges and hatreds seek a way to unravel, all of humanity is at stake.

The young heroes leave Five Hills behind, embarking on a journey to the distant Misty Isles to uncover the red comet's secret. Their guide, the charming yet treacherous Renn Tauganei, harbors dark intentions.

Meanwhile, Franz's adventure in Eastern Andiol takes an unexpected turn, the Monteilons seek power in Dimalos, and the vengeful Jolanda makes an irreversible choice. Behind the scenes, Marshal General Vondau weaves his own web of intrigue.

In the end, many will realize how weak one person is when the Darkness rises - first it encircles its victims, then it strikes without mercy. The death offered by the Darkness is never easy.
