These stories often contain explicit sexual scenes, but the content of the various selections is about far more than the isolated sexual escapades. David McLeod writes stories set both in a medieval fantasy world and in various Earth-analogues that touch that world from time to time. While admitting a debt to a youth wasted on fantasy and role-playing games, his goal is to bring fresh heroes, villains, and ordinary people into worlds different, but not so different, from our own.

The two stories I've authored thus far, WORKING IT OUT and BELOVED, can be classified as "growing up gay" works, I think. The protagonist(s) are outed or come out to family and friends, sometimes moving from questionable support or lack of support for their orientation among significant others into strong commitments which permit them to mentor others. Religious affiliations of the heroes and their real or adoptive families are portrayed as supportive of gays, who often seek formal recognition .

For Libby Drew's young protagonists, this sudden attraction is a revelation, the first step on the path to self-discovery. My mind has always preferred to be elsewhere than the here and now and as a child it was the past, or fiction set in worlds that have never existed, that set me alight and dragged me into libraries and bookshops. Even as a kid I liked creating alternative worlds. My story Terre Nouvelle is set in a world I created in my teenage bedroom to find escape from the grimness of adolescent reality. But creating stories is not the same as generating places in which they might happen, and the creative energy they're drawn from come from deep within. It's from my gayness that I draw it, and so my characters generally live in that alternative place as well as in alternative worlds.
