Kismet is a transgressive coming-of-age story set against the backdrop of a stifling North London summer. It explores the fragile boundary between childhood innocence and the electric, often terrifying, awakening of adolescent desire.

Ryan is nineteen, a student, shares a flat in London with his ex-school mates who know he's gay, but still think he might not be. He is going to meet someone he found on a dating app, a first!

James reunites with his ex, Evan, now a determined law student, and they slowly rebuild their relationship with new boundaries. While James is sent out of town to rescue a failing engineering project, his homophobic family crises erupt: his father’s cancer and death, and his brother Sam’s years of manipulation and financial abuse. Supported by Evan, James protects his mother, pursues justice, and begins to imagine a shared, hard-won future where love, not fear, defines the rest of his life, one cautious step at a time, finally choosing himself.

This is a much delayed spin-off from the two-part Clinton Boys series. We’re reacquainted with Ed Lamont and Claude Moreau, two boys whose paths meet and over the span of almost a decade, culminate in disaster.

Reading or being familiar with the Clinton Boys series isn’t necessary. In fact, if you haven’t read it, you won’t be exposed to a number of spoilers should you decide to skip it. But feel free to go back and read it afterward. Heehee.
