Frozen Heart - 4. Chapter 4 - Leave me alone
Maximilian slammed the front door.
"People are so annoying! Why can't they leave me alone!" he thought.
He had had such a horrible day at school. Not that his classes and schedule were bad or anything, but this new guy had ALL his damn classes with him. But that's not the best part, because he is kinda cute, with his beautiful brown eyes and short blond hair, the best part is he talks A LOT. He talks non stop, he can never stop talking.
"Why me?!" he said aloud in a dramatic tone.
The day had started like any other day at school. Maximilian had gone to his homeroom gotten his schedule, and had been gazing out the window. The teacher, a new one, had been going on and on and on about our Junior year when this boy had burst in the class out of breath.
"Sorry I'm late, I'm new here and got lost..." his voice had gotten Maximilian's attention, it had sounded oddly familiar but he couldn't quite put his finger on it.Maximilian had turned away, not really caring as usual, and had went back to gazing
"No worries young man, I'm new here too and eve I got lost," the teacher had answered jokingly. "You can go sit down right over there"
He nodded, and had walked towards the only empty desk in the room. The one next to Maximilian. Obviously, the rumor of Ghost hadn't reached the new teacher as she had called out:
"Max, I see you and Aaron have a lot of..."
"My name isn't Max!" he had snapped, his eyes darting to the teacher.
"I didn't know he talked!" he had heard someone whisper from behind him.
"I uh, as I was uh saying. Maximilian, I see you and Aaron have a lot of classes in common, all of them actually, would you mind showing him around?"
Maximilian had looked at the boy. Aaron, as the teacher had said, had been looking at Maximilian with wide eyes full of surprise, and a small grin had been forming at the corners of his mouth. Maximilian had shrugged and had went back once again to gazing.
After class, Aaron had followed Maximilian around like a little dog. People would turn and look surprised as they passed in the halls. For most it had been a real shocker to see Ghost in the company of anyone! Aaron hadn't tried to keep a low profile, he had just talked, and talked, and talked. He had walked next to Maximilian like he had known him for a long time, and he had talked about lots of things, most of them common social interactions that had required no answer on Maximilian's behalf. Even at Lunch he hadn't left him alone, and for once there were people at Maximilian's table. Students had come to check out Ghost and his new "buddy," most also had come to greet the new kid in town (a rare sight). The voices had made Maximilian's head spin.
"So many voices, so much noise! Too close, they are too close!!" he thought as he battled with the intense headache he knew was coming. The bell, thankfully, had saved him, and he had gotten up to go to his afternoon classes.
"You OK? You don't look so good."
"I'm fine!" Maximilian had answered angrily. In truth he had been having a tremendous battle with himself. In the moments of intense pain or extreme stress, the walls of ice would weaken, some of them collapsing. It took a lot of effort to keep a flood of memories and emotions from overtaking him. He knew that if too many came out at once he would loose it! He had leaned against a wall to catch his breath. That's when Aaron had done something unexpected, he had taken Maximilian in his arms and had comforted him. Instantly, the pressure had gone down, and Maximilian had reformed his walls, but in one last moment of weakness he had said:
"Thank you."
Aaron had know him for less than a day and had already, in a way, saved him. Even though he had wanted to be grateful, he couldn't have let himself be controlled by these emotions. He had turned and walked away as if nothing had happened. At the end of the day, as Maximilian had been going back to his car (an old thing that barely worked but got him to school on time), Aaron caught up to him.
"Hey, I was wondering if you could give me a lift. My car still hasn't arrived yet, and my mom can't come pick me up..."
As much as Maximilian had wanted to get in his car and drive off, leaving Aaron there, he couldn't, in a way he wanted to repay him for earlier and be rid of his debt towards him. He had sighed and had motioned him to get in.
As it turned out, Aaron lived on the way to Maximilian's aunt's house. When they got there, Maximilian had seen a beautiful white house, not too big, not too small, surrounded by a huge garden. Boxes had been piled up here and there, and people had been getting in and out carrying stuff to their proper place.
"Can I have your number?" Aaron had asked.
Maximilian had looked at him shocked. No one had ever asked for his number, he was touched by the thought, but at the same time, Aaron was really starting to get on his nerves. He had given him his number, figuring it would get him to shut up and leave him alone at last.
"Thanks! I will see you tomorrow Maximilian!" at least he had called him by his name and not that diminutive he hated so much.
Maximilian was now reading in the library, having calmed down a bit. He was sitting in his favorite spot, on the couch facing the window. Suddenly his phone vibrated.
"Hey it's Aaron what are you doing?"
Maximilian felt a surge of anger course through him, even after school was over, Aaron still found a way to talk to him, it was infuriating. Was he too thick as to understand that silence was Maximilian's best and only friend! He threw his phone at the other end of the couch in disgust. The book he was reading, Les Misérables by Victor Hugo was much more interesting! Comfort soon came from the words of one of France's finest author. Alas, his phone vibrated again.
"Answer me Maximilian :'( I know you enough to say that I know you are reading my texts!" Maximilian was really angry now!
"You know nothing of me!" he had typed furiously before hitting send.
"Yeah I do, you proved me right yourself :D" Maximilian's anger was snuffed out like a candle, and he realized how Aaron had baited him to perfection. He was ashamed of himself now, getting baited by the first boy that had gotten his number...
"So what are you doing? you better answer me this time! "
"Reading."
"Could your answer be any shorter?"
"Yes." Maximilian answered a little pleased with himself.
"Ok... you got me smart-ass..."
"Could you please leave me alone? just for tonight..."
"Fine, fine. I'll leave you to your books, but just for tonight But know this, tomorrow you are going to hear my voice, a lot!!"
