Street Words - 8. Sadness - Life - California

Three poems from my past.

Sadness

Rolls over me
Like a morning fog; thick
blankets my soul like
Chain mail

 

Life

The sun shines bright and hot
People run like roaches
Afraid of the light
Why don’t they see the futility?
Life is a wheel
Run till you drop
or stop, breathe and see.

 

      

California

 

Tired of the cold, we travelled to
a land warm and gold
We sat on the beach, walked tide pools
warm. Teasing crabs and laughing
We knew rent needed paying, so to
work we went, walking

the new streets of L.A.

Sadness... perfect... concise yet full... so full of real... chain mail...such a powerful image to evoke
Life... a lesson... intuitive... I loved that you italicized the final word "see" because for me it was the most important one
California... from carefree and childlike to resigned and businesslike in a heartbeat...the singsong I felt in it made it all the more powerful
All three resonated with sadness, but were beautiful within their confines... these are quintessential tim poems to me, but your happy ones make me feel better... You don't need me to tell you, but I will anyway... you are a poet extraordinaire... cheers... Gary...

Hey tim

 

As you always do, you have a way with words. I liked all three poems for the stories they tell but it was these lines from the Life poem that touched me the most. You've said variations of them on more than one occasion I do recall. It is an important message. If only everyone could hear and heed that plea, the world might be in a better place.

 

Run till you drop
or stop, breathe and see.

Thank you Gary, for your thoughtful and insightful comments. I found these some time ago and showed them to AC. But forgot about them until I was looking through an old notebook. I appreciate your kind compliment. Thank you.

Hi dugh, yes you're right about the chain mail, it's heavy but conforms around the body somewhat, as heavy as it is protective.

Hi reader. You know i saw a lot while i lived on the street. I'd watch people rushing here and there, and I couldnt figure out why really. To me at the end of all that rushing only lay death. So why hurry? I'm not much of a rusher now... thanks for your comments and for your support. I appreciate it.

Hi Parker, glad you liked em. Jeff and I made our way to California one year. Living on the beach in the warmth and playing together, the first and only time really, was amazing. But yeah there was a price to pay. We nearly went to jail there, so we thought it best we come back home... thanks Parker for reading and for your comments, I appreciate them.
