A Man in a Room, and other poems - 7. more to song than music

Poem No. 13

Two rules for living

One:

Never take yourself too seriously

because there's more to life than living

Two:

Never conduct too slowly

because there's more to song than music

P.S. Not to be taken necessarily in that order.

Poem No. 14

She whispers from a place I've never seen

of meandering hills and misty pines

of gooey buttercups and creamy butterflies.

She tells me that a thing of beauty

is simply a thing understood.

She whispers that the key to growing

lies in the dream of imagination.

She whispers of a place I've never seen

of meandering hills and misty pines.

Poem No. 15

The curve of a face

is a misleading thing

for it of the soul cannot sing.

Beauty is ugly, it's only a thing

For a soul doesn't live in a face

Note: Another proto-Ross poem?

Number 15 I agree with completely, and I believe there`s a lot of people who should read it, so they`d wake up, look in the mirror and see what they really are. But that`s unfortunately not going to happen...Plastic people will always be plastic... Great pieces here. I will have to re-read again to get more out of them. :)

Thanks for a great review, Dennis. Yeah, plastic people...I like the image you create of them needing an honest appraisal in a mirror.

13 .. two great prescriptions!
14 .. oh gooey buttercups and creamy butterflies.. nice, rich descriptions! You may not have been there when you wrote these, but I think that by now, you surely have.
15 .. For Ross? Why not? Beauty is only a thing - that's so very true …. Handsome is, as handsome does. Some of the ugliest people in the world are beyond beautiful.

All three are wonderful, AC!

Thanks for a great review, Tim! I always appreciate hearing your take on things.

Cheers again.

Again, you give us three concentrated, powerful poems to consider. Each gives me things to think about and remember.
Two Rules:
I wish I could follow Number One; the Dalai Lama tells us that the truth you tell us is so, but why is it so hard to follow this teaching? As for Number Two, you have come up with a memorable and weighty idea and metaphor. It is going on my classroom door.
Poem No. 14:
So ambiguous, this whispering woman, yet she tells me so much in her breathy words. This mysterious and lovely place she lives must be wonderful, as you say. How I wish I could live the dream of my imagining, some days; to walk with my friend among the dewed and jeweled trees in those winding hills.
Poem No. 15
The last line should be engraved on everyone's unconscious mind. How many times do we mistake the face for the soul? I cannot help but feel this particular poem keenly, for experience has taught me that while this poem speaks of a very deep truth, many people have never managed to hear it.

I observed a man
called Ross; and it seems he was
fortunate, indeed.

I loved all three of these AC..
The rules are perfect, if only we slow down long enough to remember. #14 put me in the mind of spring and possibilities and places I wish I could be. And 15 is just pure truth. I love how wonderful this message is..
Not sure if the two were meant to connect, but much like there's more to song than music, a soul doesn't live in a face. That's what stayed with me.. Ok done..

Thank you..

Thank you, Parker. I'm never confident that my early work connects with people, and still find it amazing when feedback comes back saying it does. Your review is beautiful.

It's a great honor to hear part of lucky-poem No. 13 will be posted on your classroom door. I know it's a place some of your students except to find interesting and inspiring pieces.

As for No. 14, in this period as a developing poet, I was quite taken with the Romantics and kept circling back to absorb and try to re-create the feeling I got from reading their works.

Thanks once again for your encouragement and kind words.

Thank you, Def. Poems Nos. 13 and 15 were written two days apart, so there's every possibility they are thematically linked. It seems the January I was 20 years old I had given myself the challenging of writing verse every day. By the end of the month, 33 poems were written. A couple are quite surprisingly good.

Thanks again for a beautiful review. I appreciate it a great deal.
