System of a Wolf - 31. Chapter 31

A rock flipped over, sending several bugs scattering in the light. Lynn’s tail hung limply behind her as she chased the bugs. She couldn’t miss the feeling of a tail moving behind her; the neko had never felt that. But the prosthetics still helped a lot with her dysphoria.

“Damn it Erith, fucking drag Blake and I out here to help you and then you don’t even stick around…”

“You said a bad word,” Lynn giggled, looking up from the rock.

“No, I said two two bad words,” Adam said. “And you shouldn’t repeat either. Now, if you help me dig these holes, we can get this done a lot faster.”

“I dun wanna,” Lynn pouted, staring at the shovels.

She wasn’t even supposed to be out, and she knew it. Five at night was her time, but she had missed so much over the past few weeks, and Lynn was tired of hiding.

‘If you help Blake, he might give you cookies.’

“Biscuits?” Lynn blurted, looking at where Blake was working in the pond.

The mage frowned, looking up at her.

“Cookies? Did Erith say you could have cookies?” he asked, several silver fish spiralling around him as the school tried to figure out what he was.

“Yesh. But I have to help dig,” Lynn replied, a scowl crossing her face.

“Okay. You help Adam dig, and when I’m done anchoring these lilies, I’ll go make us some cookies and nice cold milk.”

“How about a bit of iced tea?” Adam suggested, watching Blake pull himself out of the water.

“Sounds like a plan,” Blake smiled, shaking himself off.

He crossed around the pond, and pulled Adam into a hug, their lips meeting briefly.

“Ew…” Lynn complained.

“Don’t ew what you don’t understand,” Blake chuckled. “Erith likes it too.”

Lynn grumbled as she stepped away from the rocks. She took the shovel Adam handed to her, scowling at the tool.

“You’re the expert. How deep do we need the holes?” Adam asked.

“I dunno. Erie knows,” Lynn pouted, climbing up to balance on the shovel head.

“Look, I’m doing this for Blake. I could leave you to dig on your own right now. I don’t think Erith would be very happy that nothing got done today, would he?”

Lynn shrugged, scowling at the dirt.

“I’m digging,” she said, shoving the shovel into the ground.

“But how deep?” Adam asked again.

‘Twelve inches for brugmansia.’

Leaning into the shovel, Lynn glared at the man.

“Erie says twelve for the bru… brug… for the trumpets,” she muttered.

“Twelve it is,” Adam said, stepping up to a small post buried just next to the pond. “Brugmansia?”

Lynn shrugged.

“We’ll dig here and hope it’s right.”

The man stabbed his shovel into the ground, loosening up the dirt as Lynn joined him. The two worked together until they had a large hole in the ground.

Adam grabbed the plant that looked like hanging trumpets, carefully removing it from the container it was in before dropping it into the hole.

“You want to loosen the roots?”

Lynn knelt, dropping her shovel as she dug her hands into the clumped dirt around the plant. Loosening the roots, she began mixing the dirt with the dirt from the hole. Adam began burying the roots again as Lynn held the plant up.

“There we go. One down, five to go,” Adam sighed as the hole was filled.

Erith supposed it was mean, taking over from Lynn before she could have her cookies. But she’d had her fun, and besides, Blake was too busy cuddling with Adam on the couch to fetch the cookies. Erith had to convince her and Gara, but finally he was in control of his body again, pulling the cookies out of the oven so they could cool.

The yard was finished. He’d glanced out the kitchen window at the landscaped pond, feeling a surge of gratefulness passing through him. This was his home now. There was nothing left of his uncle here. It was a quiet moment for him, something he knew not many would understand. For so long he’d been remembering his past, seeing his uncle every time he looked out this window. It had been near impossible to change that, but Blake had helped push him into fixing his home.

The elf set several of the cookies on a plate, pouring milk into a trio of glasses. Erith carried everything into the living room, frowning at the sight of Blake curled up on Adam’s lap.

“Excuse me, doesn’t he get enough of you at his house?”

The elf passed the cookies around, before dropping onto the far end of the couch. Instantly Blake changed positions, leaning against Erith as Adam let out a low chuckle.

“I have to admit, Lynn is a lot more agreeable than you,” the man said.

“Probably,” Erith shrugged. “I’m still figuring her out.”

“I always thought tails were offensive to nekos.”

“Yeah, try telling that to a neko without a tail. It’s not like I can stop her.”

Erith bit into a cookie, letting out a soft moan as Blake snuggled into him. His hand began stroking the man’s hair gently as they watched the tv together. Despite the presence of Adam, the elf had to admit he had never felt this loved before. Nuzzling Blake gently as they shared the cookies, Erith closed his eyes, basking in the moment.

Blake leaned against the wolf as the sun started to set. Tonight he would be heading back to Adam’s house, but there was no way he was leaving without saying goodbye to Gara.

The wolf breathed in the scents around him happily. There was love here, proper mated love, and he was in the middle of it. His tongue flicked out, licking at Blake’s leg, and the mage giggled.

“Stop it!”

Gara let out a loud huff, resting his chin on Blake’s leg as the mage pet him. This was the life. Laying with the one he loved, listening to the soft hissing of fragrant juices as food cooked, the wolf was feeling spoiled. So many weeks, months, years even, spent eating kibble, and now he had human food almost every night. Sure, Blake often spent four days at Adam’s house, but he always came back, and he always gave Gara extra hugs the first night he got back.

The wolf still felt the loss of Varen. The elf was in there somewhere, but he was not going to front again for a long time, if ever. It was painful, but Gara focused more on the members of his pack that he could feel.

His pack was happy.

“Can you wash my back?”

The mage fiddled with the lock as they approached the front door, the lock clicking just before Adam could slide his key inside. It was a game they played, letting Blake practice unusual applications of his magic. Adam seemed happy to let him have his fun.

“Of course Puppy,” Adam smiled, pushing the door open. “We’ll shower together. I’m surprisingly dirty after digging holes in a yard.”

“I can’t imagine why,” Blake snickered. “Is tonight the night?”

“Not quite yet. I know you’re anxious. It’s okay. I want to wait a little longer.”

“Are you scared?” the mage asked. “I know you want me. I can smell it.”

“A little,” Adam admitted. “I don’t want to hurt you. And there’s… a little more to it than that.”

“You want me to fuck you instead,” Blake replied, his hand running along Adam’s side.

The older man nodded.

“But not yet. I’m still getting over sharing you with Erith honestly. Well… getting used to. I don’t want you to think I don’t want to do this for you. But it’s definitely a stretch for me.”

“It’s okay Adam. I can wait,” Blake smiled. “But you can’t take a shower with this on.”

He pulled off the man’s shirt, before slipping his fingers into the waist of Adam’s shorts.

“Or these.”

The fabric fell, leaving Adam in his underpants. Blake stopped there, drinking in the sight of his mate. He would save the images for later.

“Why don’t we go get cleaned? I’m all yours right now,” he murmured, leaning in to kiss Adam gently.

Arms wrapped around the mage, pulling him into Adam as the werewolf returned his kiss hungrily. Blake could feel both of their bodies reacting, and he closed his eyes, letting his magic brush tenderly over Adam’s head as his arms rubbed the man’s back.

“Yes, I know you have magic. I’m not going to change my mind,” Adam whispered. “But we’ll still take our shower, and then we can cuddle together.”

“Deal,” Blake smiled. “I’m going to look all I want, but I promise I won’t touch unless you tell me it’s okay.”

He pulled away, leaving the ghost of a kiss on Adam’s lips.

“Why don’t you go get started? I need to put some things away and then I’ll be right in with you.”

Blake nodded happily, before racing upstairs to the bathroom. Grabbing a fluffy bathrobe from a closet, the mage stripped off his dirty clothes and tossed them into the chute that sent clothes straight to the laundry room. The shower started with the twist of a button, hot and steamy, and Blake stepped under the water, watching the dirt from the day darken the floor under him.

He reached for his toothbrush and set about cleaning every part of himself, teeth first. Once that had been taken care of, the mage shaved quickly, letting the hot water provide lubrication for his skin.

It didn’t take long before he heard the door open. The curtain was pulled back, and Blake grinned at the sight of a very naked Adam.

“Don’t even think about it. I already took care of things,” the man smirked.

“I never should have gotten you back into that,” Blake pouted playfully.

He turned around under the water before handing a bar of soap to Adam. Leaning against the front of the shower, the mage spread his legs, grinning over his shoulder as Adam stepped into the shower behind him.

“Okay, let’s get this show on the road,” Adam said, scrubbing Blake’s shoulders and back.

His hands stopped short of Blake’s butt, and the mage pouted at him again, his eyelids flicking.

“No, no touching. You can wash that part just fine without me,” Adam said firmly.

But the man still stepped forward, leaning into Blake as he kissed his mate gently. Their bodies met in a mix of warmth, and Blake melted into an embrace as he turned to give Adam access to his front. He took the soap from Adam, scrubbing the man’s back as they kissed.

Adam pulled back, his teeth tugging at Blake’s lower lip lightly.

“I love doing this,” he smiled at the mage. “I love being here with you, letting you take care of me like this.”

Blake felt his face burning as he turned his attentions to Adam’s chest. Letting his hands run over the man’s torso, the mage was sorely tempted to reach lower, to play with what he knew he wanted. But Blake forced himself to stay above Adam’s waist, finally setting the soap aside as he stepped out from under the water so Adam could rinse off.

“I enjoy it too,” he said quietly, leaning back as he watched his mate shower. “I always get people who think because I have a little side, I have to be babied. You don’t do that to me. And it’s nice to have that balance, to be adult and little when I need it.”

“It’s because I love you Blake. And I am learning to understand you. I never want to hurt you, and this is my way of showing you, you don’t have to be afraid around me. You’re my mate, and I promise, I will always protect you.”

Blake stepped forward again, pulling Adam into a tight embrace.

“I love you too.”

This story is admittedly not the best I've written. I wrote it as a test, to see if I could get a decent story out in a month's time. With two thousand words and one chapter a day, often written three or four hours at a time while chaos reigned around me, I was lucky to finish. For that reason, there are probably a lot of plotholes, a lot of inconsistencies, and for that, I apologize. That said, this is considered canon for the world, and I wanted to make sure Blake and Erith had their stories told, even if poorly done. I hope everyone enjoyed the story, if not the writing.

Very well done for a speed writing contest.  Sad it’s the end, but very enjoyable reading.

Honestly? I'm just disappointed. In the beginning I was hooked on the concept, I'm autistic and the idea of exploring D.I.D. in a story where they weren't vilified or pitied for it was super interesting. The first few chapters had the spark of something unique and good, but it just went nowhere. Blake's autistic traits and routines were phased out, and Erith's system and how he copes with it felt more like a plot device for drama rather than a realistic portrayal. Erith and Blake's... romance? Was both rushed and drawn out. The legitimate conversations about coping with their trauma and disorders and the impact that would have on their relationship was SO interesting. It felt so good to see frank discussions of stuff like that because that's something I can relate to, only for that to take a back seat. The hospital interlude was 100% pointless except to give points to Adam for.... not leaving Erith to be tortured to death?

Adam as a whole is just... such a shitty character. He's introduced as a child rapist going after his victim... and never evolves past that point. His only goal, his only motivation, is wanting to get his victim back. At no point did he ever come off as anything but a selfish child rapist, but the narrative seems to treat him as reformed and nice. He only got therapy after he was caught. After that, he IMMEDIATLY chased after his victim, kidnapped the victim's friend/love interest to stop him from interfering, and acts like a dick when people are rightfully wary of him.

Dr Martin is supposed to be Blakes guardian I guess, and seems to have no objections to Blakes childhood rapist wanting to come back into his life. Blake seems to have no suspicions of literal strangers saying "Hey I'm your rapist's friend, put on this blindfold and get in my car". The whole plot there is so messy, and actively disgusting. Adam's every action shows he has not changed a bit, and is only saying things to gain Blake's trust. The whole thing took an interesting story and ruined it. We didn't get an exploration of Blake's trauma, or forgiveness, or change, or accountability. We got a love story about a child rapist getting their victim back, and only one person objecting. Everyone became eithrr faceless "friends" or completely differnt characters to fit this plot. It reads as so sympathetic to pedophiles in a way I know is unintentional, but the sloppiness of it means any actual analysis of it comes off as far more caring about Adam's wants than Erith's feelings. They should not be on the samelevel.

Honestly ALL my complaints lead back to Adam. Why you thought having Blake fall in love with his childhood rapist was a good idea to push the story's focus to is beyond me. I really liked the first half, the second half is a sloppy shitshow that delivered on nothing and upsets me at killing the potential of the first half. The rough prose, the pacing issues, the lack of detail, all overlooked. I liked it, a LOT. I looked past the superficial flaws. I shouldnt have, and getting invested in these characters, their lives, their stories, was a mistake. I would give the first half a 4.5 out 5, but I cant in good faith recommend This story to anyone.

I gotta say for me this story was about Erith more than about Blake.
And about Erith’s journey finding out who was in his head and dealing with a lot of stuff.

I feel like it’s far from over but he went a long way and I’m happy for him. I want to see the rest of his journey.

And I will say that I don’t like Adam at all. But I respect him. For being able to resist the mate bond for so long and avoid sex (as I saw other wolves fail the same despite good intentions).

Although the fact he wasn’t able to resist that same pull before, when Blake was a kid - that is something that makes me despise him.

I don’t think he is a pedophile in the usual sense. There’s no mention of him being attracted to children as such. The years of therapy just helped him control his wolf I am guessing? But I still despise him for doing what he did and not saving his mate. If he felt the bond he should have protected Blake. Maybe he was just a coward who knows?

I understand what he does for Erith doesn’t give him any extra points as it’s the same bond working - he can’t hurt his mate or see him hurt so he accepts the elf as part of the deal. So maybe it’s a way for him to try to make up for what he should have done all those years ago but didn’t?

And for the same reason he is willing to save Erith from the weird hospital. Because the hurt Erith’s death would cause Blake would be unbearable for him too.

I’m curious about one thing though - Varen held Erith’s memories of abuse and his sexuality - now Varen is gone and the sexuality is back - what about the memories? Because those are definitely something Erith needs to deal with too.

This story was never supposed to have a traditionally happy ending, and that's because of Adam. He's not supposed to be a character anyone could relate to, he's supposed to show that even this world has its struggles with laws that do more harm than good.

Regarding Erith and Varen, it's shown occasionally that Varen fronted when Erith was reminded of certain triggers, largely having to do with his trauma as a child. Those memories are not going to come rushing back, but it's possible that, as Varen is "dead", the memories might start returning when triggered instead of being locked away by Erith's alter.

I totally understand what you mean about the ending. But I feel it needs more background about werewolves and laws to be understood by people who didn’t read any other story of yours about werewolves.

Also I know it sounds bad, but in some way it’s the happiest ending we could get. I mean Erith is happy and Blake is happy. They are both being taken care of and both of them need it a lot.

And yes that’s what I meant about the memories.

I was enjoying it a lot; I do think that it suffered from having been a speed writing towards the end - I don't think your style of writing lends itself in that direction. Left to your own pace the characters develop beautifully, and it's worth breaks in writing to get the story you want to tell. Adam certainly suffered (being introduced later in the story, he was likely to). No insult or comment on you intended - I couldn't speed write if my life depended on it.

All that said, I did enjoy it, especially the first half. Hurt/comfort/forgiveness and having initial assumptions challenged always appeal in a story. Thank you for writing!

It was a unique story. I do feel there was too much unexplained at the end. I feel like I'm lacking closure. It feels like when your reading an unfinished, timed essay, and the professor says "pencils down". I would have liked to understand Adam more. I think if there had been more depth than, "I was your mate & wanted to save you" it could have been more understandable. I can't say relatable since I'm a father and do not understand pedophilia, Norton I understand the inclusion of "minor attracted" people in the alphabet mafia (sorry but the LGBT community just keeps adding letters to the point it's ludicrous). My sister is Trans, I am Gay, we're both parents and neither of us will ever condone touching a minor. You can do anything you want with another able minded, consenting, adult. Animals and minors don't have the cognitive ability for informed consent.

That being said, this is an alternate world where there's a carnal pull to another person, if the mate bond/attraction had been better portrayed, where it was shown that Adam was trying to save his mate and had no other option, instead of him saying he had a sickness, it would have been more relatableish. However it came across as "I liked to sleep with little boys, and just happened to come across as my mate. So I mated, turned, and abandoned him."

I love your eloquent writing and creativity, but this was probably not a storyline to be rushed.

I agree. I wrote this story during a very chaotic NaNoWriMo (if I remember correctly, our car broke down and I had to hoof it three miles in the desert with a cold) and it definitely shows in the storyline. I'm probably not going to write on such a tight schedule again.

I think you have very creative and intriguing content. I just felt you did yourself a disservice on this one. Plus sick and in a hurry never bides well. I do love this entire Astara series & the necko's are quite inventive. I hope you know I wasn't trying to bash, but I appreciate your skill enough I couldn't let it sit.

Oh not at all. I understand this story didn't come out well and I appreciate your notes :) I'm happy you're enjoying the rest of the series.
