Russ: On the loose in Ireland 4. Parborough Chronicles

   (3 reviews)
Genres: General Fiction,

It was meant to be a break, a few peaceful weeks in Ireland and a chance to reconnect with his brother.  But things don’t go according to plan.  Businessman Russ can cope, just about, with his football-mad nephews, but add in a punishing encounter with a group of yobs, and the results are not quite what anyone expected.  Though his brother has difficulty accepting Russ’ rather different personal life, ultimately the two bond over shared memories, Josephine Baker and bad poetry.

This is the fourth of my Parborough Chronicles series, but it can be read as a stand-alone. Having given Russ Kahn a brother living in southern Ireland I became intrigued by their relationship and decided to ship Russ off have an adventure of his own.

Russ takes a star turn on his own and does rather well. His appreciation for his biological family increases as they are placed on more equal footing, with his brother removing the long held chip from his shoulder and taking an interest in Russ' life and not being so defensive.

Some new friendships are forged, but it's not all ha ha hee hee, as Russ experiences racism and homophobia Irish style (or lack thereof). And of course, the weather is bloody awful, wet, cold, wet, cold and wet and cold, unless of course you like it wet and cold.

Another tasty morsel from the pen of @Robert Hugill. Given its short duration it's more an entree or an appetiser, but it's equally delicious and fulfilling as a main. "Eat" it and enjoy.

Wonderful little side story that allows us to get a better understanding of Russ, one of the more interesting characters in the Parborough Chronicles.

We get to see Russ with his brother, Con and his wife Lisa and their two football mad boys.  Russ gets into a bit of a fix; but is rescued by an unlikely mother son duo.  This of course, leads Russ to making a couple of new friends that helps him finding new ways to relate to others.

This time away, even if he is busy with family, allows Russ to really think about how his relationship with Brian and Gordon has progressed and how much that means to him.  He, with Con's help, comes to a decision, but one that Russ will have to put before Brian and Gordon upon his return to see how it flies.

A lovely jaunt through some picturesque areas of Ireland allows us to get a nice view of Russ and how these stories could move forward.

A warning, unless you have read some of the previous stories, you will be lost during certain aspects of this one.  That doesn't mean you can't enjoy this one without having read the previous ones, just means you will have to allow yourself a little more imagination to fill in the blanks.
