Montana Hearts - Prologue. Prologue - In the Beginning

Author Note:

After my last story, Out of the Blue, I was looking for something different to explore. I have been asked a several times if I might write fanfiction, usually by younger readers wanting a fantasy about characters from their favourite TV shows. I had always politely declined, but in the back of my mind it became an itch I wanted to scratch.

And so, when looking for that something different, I finally settled on my own favourite show ... which I had recently binge-watched.

Here is my moment of self-indulgence!

If you are familiar with the series, you will know the characters by heart. If you've never watched it, then please find a little background information below, which might be of some help.

Please enjoy!

There was a time when the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch seemed as permanent as the mountains that surrounded it.

Generations of Duttons had lived and died on that land. They had fought for it, bled for it, and buried their dead beneath its soil. To some, it was a kingdom. To others, a symbol of everything that had been taken from them.

But nothing lasts forever.

In the end, the land returned to the people whose ancestors had walked it long before the first Dutton ever set foot in Montana.

The buildings came down. The fences disappeared. The great ranch house, which had witnessed so much triumph and tragedy, became little more than a memory.

And the people who had once called Yellowstone home scattered to build new lives elsewhere.

But the mountains remained.

And so did the memories.

'Montana Hearts' is a fan-fic story based on characters from the television series 'Yellowstone' -- an American neo-Western drama created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson for the Paramount Network. For those who are not familiar with the series, it premiered on June 20, 2018, and concluded on December 15, 2024, after five seasons comprising 53 episodes.

The series focused on the Dutton family from Montana, and their many conflicts -- both internal and external -- and starred Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, and Gil Birmingham, among others. The Yellowstone Dutton Ranch borders the neighboring Broken Rock Indian reservation, Yellowstone National Park, and various land development interests.

In this story you can expect to catch up with:

  • Rip Wheeler: John Dutton's fiercely loyal ranch foreman, now married to Beth. A hard man who rarely expresses affection openly, but whose devotion to his family is unquestionable.

  • Beth Dutton: John's daughter. Sharp-tongued, fearless and fiercely protective of those she loves, especially Rip and Carter.

  • Carter: A troubled boy who lost his father and found an unlikely family with Beth and Rip. Now approaching adulthood, he's grown into a capable young cowboy.

  • Kayce Dutton: John's youngest son, a former Navy SEAL who struggled between his loyalty to the ranch and his desire for an independent life. Now raising Tate following Monica's death.

  • Tate Dutton: Kayce and Monica's son, grandson of John Dutton, and a young man growing into his own identity.

More than a year has passed since the Yellowstone ceased to exist. A year in which lives had changed, families had grieved, and new beginnings had been made.

Yet somewhere beneath all those changes, the old bonds remained. And sometimes, all it takes to bring a family together again is a telephone call.

I, for one, don't like Fan Fiction; while I realize it has its place, it is something I would never cross the street for.

That said, knowing the author, I'm more than willing to give it a chance...

While I have seen Kevin Costner in other programs/movies, to date I haven't seen a single minute or episode of Yellowstone...but...I just came back from a week at Yellowstone National Park, so I may consider myself well-acquainted and quite the expert...just sayin....

Well you are smarter than the average bear Yogi. Did you manage to raid any picnic baskets during your visit?

I apologize to anyone who liked this but IMHO The Dukes Of Hazzard was. the biggest waste of  film, video tape or whatever they used in those days not even @Mark Ponyboy Peters would be able to save that

I never watched it as it had no appeal to me. I seem to recall it was inspired by Smokey And The Bandit  or is my recollection faulty?
