My Life Started at the End of the World - 12. Chapter 12 - A Light In a Dark Place - Fuckin' Perfect
Aidyn's POV
Noah and I just laid there on his bed. He was shaking and balling into my shoulder. He had grabbed onto my jacket and I could feel pulling on my cloths. He watch pinching my chest but I didn't care. All I wanted was Noah to feel better.
Aaron came to the entrance, “Hey, what are you guys... Noah what's wrong?” She rushed to the side of the bed and started rubbing his back. I handed her the diary, still open to the last page.
Her eyes teared up in seconds of starting to read it. She immediately came over and started rubbing Noah's back. “He read it not to long ago.” I told her.
“How are you doing Noah?” Aaron asked him. He continued to cry, shaking into me. Aaron kept looking between the diary and Noah. “Noah... Could I read other entries?” Noah nodded.
Five minutes of silence settled in the room. Noah had settled down but still pushing into me. Aaron had started at the beginning of the book skimming through it. It was kinda awkward sitting in the room.
“Noah there is an entry I would like to read this entry to you... May I?”
Noah actually turned and looked at Aaron. “What is it about?”
“You.” Aaron then began reading the entry.
March 23rd 2008
Today is Easter and Mom and Dad are home for it! Noah and I were so exceited when we got up today.
Noah actually came into my room and jumped on my bed to wake me up. At first I was really irritated and shoved him off my bed. That made him cry though, so I apologized and gave him some of the candy I got for Easter.
The rest of the day was fun though! We went to the beach and swam and splashed. We were there as a family and it was great. Why can't we have more days like this? If I could have more days where me and Noah just get along... That would make my life.
Noah was crying again but not sobbing. “I remember that day. He pushed me off his bed and I landed on one of his toys. It hurt allot! He gave me candy though and a back rub.” The smile on his face was priceless.
“Noah... I know you just, yeah... Can we try and focus on the good memories of Ryan?” Noah nodded. “He probably wanted you to find it, but not like this. He probably wanted you to be older. He never would have predicted how your life has been, he just wanted the best for you okay?”
Noah nodded, “I know... It's just... It hurts knowing everything he did he did for me. And it ended up killing him.” Noah looked up at me, “Aidyn, I don't want to hide anymore...”
“Okay...” I knew what he meant by that... he wanted me to come out to my parents. That wouldn't be an easy feat for me to do.
Greyson's POV
“How about Three Days Grace?”
“Of course!” Mom had just gotten me a new ipod, a shuffle. It's one that I don't need to be able to see very well to use. No screen, downside: low memory.
We were going through the musical library on the household computer getting songs for it. Then we placed them in a play list and that would be the only thing on the ipod. Sounded good to me! I was getting music to listen to.
“Now remember you can't listen while you're walking around anywhere. Do I make myself clear?” I nodded and saluted her. I got a light smack for that, “Don't smart act me mister!”
“All I did was salute my 1st in command.” I laughed and we continued with the search for music. We actually finished just as the phone rang. “I'll get it, you finish the ipod up!”
I rushed over to the phone and answered it. “Hello, is Mrs. Payne there?”
“Yes, one moment, may I ask who's calling?” I asked the grumpy old man on the phone.
“I am with her bank, we're just conduction a survey on her recent transaction.” Okay, sounds good to me. I brought the phone to mom and she started this survey thing. I guess they were asking allot of out of 10 questions.
Just as I heard the computer make a beep the door closed. Dad's home! “DAD!” I covered my mouth, “Sorry mom...”
I heard footsteps and finally a voice, “Greyson, what are you doing on the computer?” It was dad! YES!! He's been so busy with getting settled into his new job he's been getting home super late. “Don't you have your own?”
I sighed, “Didn't mom tell you? The voice system isn't working as well anymore. I could say 'cheese burger' and it'll put in 'please brander'. It doesn't make any sense sometimes.”
“Yes mom did tell me about that. Why don't you come with me for a sec.” Dad put his hand on my shoulder and lead me towards the kitchen. Even in my lack of sight, if I'm in a place long enough I can move like a normal person. Parents just can't redecorate very often. “Here it's on the table in front of you.”
I placed my hands down on a box form... wrapped in wrapping paper, “Is it in wrapping paper?”
“Yes Greyson it is.”
I rolled my eyes... I think. “You know I'm blind right?” Dad got a laugh out of that. “What is it?”
“Well it's actually in a very weird bag, not wrapping paper. And as for what it is, It's a new top of the line laptop with a program called JAWS on it.” JAWS... hasn't mom and dad talked about this before? “JAWS stands for Job Applications With Speech. It will allow you to search web sites, write email, word documents, PDF documents, excell spread sheets. You'll be able to be on a computer like everyone else. The only thing it doesn’t do is tell you what pictures are, it will only say graphic unless it is labelled and then it may say something like yellow lab puppy sleeping on blanket if the person putting the picture on the web page has labelled it that way.”
This got me so excited I started jumping around loosing where I was in the room. “Dad that's so awesome! Thank you so much!!”
“It's for being such a good sport about moving here. I know it hasn't been easy for you to adjust to your new surroundings. I've heard that you have the house almost memorized though.”
I felt my cheeks heat up, “Ya, you didn't need to guide me to the kitchen, I knew where it was.”
“I'm sorry, I wasn't sure.” I could hear that he really wanted to see that I knew my way around. “Come on lets tell your mom all about the computer.”
I rushed out to the living room. I nearly hit the wall on my way by it. I heard dad start to call my name but noticing I dodged it, he stopped. It couldn't have been helped, I went on a rant to my parents about what kind of stuff I would do on the computer.
The most important thing to do on it though was definitely, “I can start up my own facebook account and talk to Sky on it!”
“Sky?” Dad questioned.
“Skylar Scott, the boy who has been showing Greyson around at school.” Mom informed him.
I could hear the smile in Dad's voice, “Well why don't we invite him over for dinner tonight? It's only 4:50, hopefully his parents haven't started anything.”
“I'll call him right now!” I got up and was about to go to the charger for the phone, “Mom, where's the phone?”
“It's right here.” My hands went out looking for it. I finally felt it in mom's hands and grabbed it and went up to my room. The last thing I heard mom say was, “He really likes spending time...” I assume she was talking about Sky.
I quickly dialled his number and waited for the, “Hello, Scotts residence.” it was Mrs. Scott.
“Hi, it's Greyson, it Sky there?”
“Yes he is, I'll get him for you right now Greyson.”
“Thank you Mrs. Scott!” I waited for Sky's voice to be heard and asking who it was. Before he could even say a word I called out, “ASK IF YOU CAN COME OVER FOR DINNER!!” I must have blown his ear off. I think he heard me from my house, let alone the phone.
“Hello to you too, Greyson. So mom, can I?” I must have been pretty loud then. “Mom says sure, she was about to start dinner up. Should I bike over now?”
Cue my door opening, “Tell him we'll come pick him up.” Perfect dad thanks!
“My dad and I will come pick you up. Be there in a few minutes. See ya!” Sky replied back but I was to excited to listen, sorry Sky. “Come on we gotta get going!”
“Hold on their, calm down a minute. I wanna ask you something first okay?” What could be so important to keep Sky waiting? “Greyson, whatever your answer it wont effect how much me and your mother loves you. Do you have feelings for Sky?”
My exceitedness disappeared. Did my dad just ask me if I was gay? “What do you mean dad?”
Dad's tone went serious, “You know what I mean Greyson. Do you have feelings for this boy, like me and your mother have for each other? Do you like like him?” I don't think I've ever been his with such a loaded question in my life. I remained quiet, not saying a word. “Like I said, this wont effect how much we love you, or that Skylar is coming for dinner. I would just like an answer, Greyson.”
I backed up, not realizing my bed was right there. I fell onto it and pushed back into the wall. It felt like in my dark world I was trapped in a cage, the only key was a single word, 'yes'. But outside that cage were monsters... monsters who would hurt me and leave me to die in a heart beat.
My body started to shake so I hugged myself trying to make it stop. It was useless, I shook even more. My eyes shot all around the room, my breathing increased. The monsters were right there just waiting for it... Just waiting for those doors to be opened to lunge and attack the helpless blind kid.
I was about to scream when I felt a warm hand touch my foot. That hand pulled me in and I felt a chest, a man's chest against me. A hero? No... Yes, a hero, my dad. “It's okay to be scared Greyson. Those types of feelings can cause all sorts of stress. You don't need to answer now, when ever you are ready to answer you can okay?” I nodded, “Now lets go get Sky, okay?”
“Ya... he's probably waiting for us right now.” And he was. He was waiting for us in the front yard. Playing with Sam too! I could hear them from the truck! Sky quickly got Sam back inside and into the truck with us.
It was Sky's first time meeting my dad, and I could hear that he was nervous. Dad tried to find common ground with him immediately. We got home and us three were deep in conversation. We talked all throughout dinner, mom joined in sometimes too, it was great!
After dinner we excused ourselves and went up to my room. This was also the first time Sky was seeing my room. “It's really blank... Don't take that offensively.”
“Wasn't planning on it. I'm not a very good decorator... No eyes does that to a guy.” I laughed, but Sky remained quiet. “What's up Sky?”
The next thing I felt was our lips pressing against each other. We started to kiss, our lips moved in perfect synergy. The 1st of July fireworks were going off from our lips or at least it felt like it. The kiss stopped, “Sorry...” The exact thing I said to him.
“No need to be... It was nice.” We sat there in silence for a while. “Sky... Do you like me?”
“I think so... It's really confusing.”
“I think I like you too... I agree this is really confusing. My dad asked me if I liked you before we came and picked you up... I got really scared.” I felt his arms wrap around me in a hug.
“Don't be scared Greyson.” He hugged me tight. I returned it, “Greyson... What does this mean for us?”
“Can we just agree that no matter what happens, we'll be friends.”
Sky nodded, “Agreed!” I felt his arms lower down to my hips. “Greyson... I want to talk to my parents about my feelings... will you be there with me?”
I nodded, “Of course, Sky, anytime!”
Chapter end
One being my favourite part of writing this chapter was Greyson's thoughts when his dad called him out. Honestly my favorite thing I've written.
Second being JAWS is an actual program that a reader uses. YA an actual blind person reads this story! It's great! I love it! Thought I would share that.
