My Life Started at the End of the World - 4. Chapter 4 - Greyson Payne - Boulevard of Broken Dreams

Welcome my personal favorite character of MLSEW, Greyson Payne!

Here I stood inside of what my mom called the office of my new high school. She was talking with a secretary about me. Making sure I get the treatment I need. I would look around the office but there is nothing to see.

“Greyson needs a guide. After a few weeks he should be fine but in the beginning he wont remember where his classes are.” My mom practically demanded it.

“Mrs. Payne I will see if there is anyone who is in all of his classes. If there is I will ask them to show him around.” Mom seemed satisfied with that. I just hoped it wouldn't be an ass like last time. “There doesn't appear to be any. Ma'am, still, I can guarantee you that someone will escort your son around. You can go on with your business with peace in mind.”

Mom sighed, “Greyson are you going to be alright.” She put her hand on my shoulder.

“I'll be fine. I'll find someone who can help me.” I gave her my 'I'll be okay' smile.

She didn't wanna leave before she knew I was fine. She's always been like this. “If there is a single problem you call me immediately. I'll see you after school. Love you.”

“Love you too mom.” She kissed my forehead and left. “Where should I wait for my escort?” I asked the secretary.

“Just outside the office should be fine. Just stay near the door.” I nodded and found the door. I made a few steps to the left of the door and stopped. There was a window behind me. I hope I wasn't blocking something important.

When I get nervous I grab my phone and just squeeze it. It's just what I do. I didn't know where I was, I've never been here before. My dad got transferred over here for his job. Something about a promotion. Now I had to get to know a whole new school.

As I stood there I got bored. So I started walking back and forth about a foot away from the wall and back. Out of the blue I felt someone bump into me. My phone went flying across the hall, I could hear it skid along the floor.

“Fuck!” I said under my breath. Where could it have gone? “Hey can anyone see my phone?” I called out. They all ignored me.

Minutes passed by and I could hear it sliding farther and farther away. I sat down by the wall and hugged my legs. With a sigh I heard someone, “Hey what's wrong?”

Without missing a beat I replied, “My phone is on the floor somewhere but I can't find it.”

She must have looked around. “I see it, one sec I'll be right back. Sky, keep him company.” There were two of them?

Who ever Sky was said nothing. I decided to start the conversation. “My name is Greyson, nice to meet you Sky.” I got up and extended my arm for a shake.

I heard a giggle and moved my arm accordingly. “You know your phone was in plain sight right?” A boy!

I smiled, “Sight isn't something I have, I'm blind.” He must have been taken aback by this. “So something that's easy to find for you, can be rather hard for me. More so when there is lots of noise.”

“I didn't know, sorry.” He must feel so bad for me.

“It's fine.”

The girl came back, “Here's your phone.” She put it in my hands. “So you're blind, aren't you? How come I haven't seen you around before.”

“I just started here. I had spent the last month getting to know the high school I was going to attend, but my dad ended up getting transferred here last minute. Now I have no idea where I am or what the school looks like.” She seamed nice enough to tell.

“So is your hair and eyes a side effect of being blind?” I heard something get hit. “Owe!” She must have hit Sky.

“Skyler, that's rude to ask.” Skyler, nice name. “If you don't mind his rude asking.”

I smiled, “It's odd really. I'm told I have white hair and faded red eyes. The doctors say I have no pigments in my hair or eyes. I'm like two thirds albino.”

They laughed at my humour. She must have realized something, “Oh, I never told you my name. it's Aaron.” Not often do I hear that as a girls name but okay. “What are you standing around the office for?”

“Like I said, I have no idea what the school looks like so I need an escort to show me around the building until I get it memorized.”

Skyler's voice was like a bullet, “I'll show you around!”

Aaron's voice appeared, “I just showed you around here Sky. What grade are you in anyways Greyson?”

“I'm in grade eight.”

Skylar was jumping from the sounds of it. “See? Perfect for me to show him around.”

“What classes do you have Greyson?” I reached into my pocket and found the only piece of paper inside and handed it over. She scanned over it, “You two don't have a single class together.”

Skylar started to whine, “I can still do it, I won't get lost.”

I turned and poked my head into the office, “Ms. Secretary, it appears I have found myself an escort. Thank you for your assistance this morning.” and walked back to them. “Where to now?”

“Well you missed homeroom so first class I guess. For you that is... Science.”

We were just about to leave when the office door opened. “Greyson dear, give this piece of paper to your escort. It excuses him or her from being late to class and allows them to get out a minute early.”

“Thank you!” either Skyler or Aaron got the paper for me. Either way it was going to Skyler.

Skyler actually knew exactly where the class was. We got there just as the bell went off. “Everyone take your seats.” The teacher called out, a Mr. Something for sure.

Skylar spoke up, “Excuse me, this is Greyson Payne. I'm escorting him around for the first few weeks of school. Where is he going to sit?”

There was a pause. “Ahh Greyson! He's sitting at the desk beside the door. It'll be easiest for him I think.”

I nodded, “Thank you, sir. I believe it will be as well. I'll see you after class Skyler.” With that he was off.

I sat down and took out my laptop. “We're not allowed laptops here escort kid.” A voice boomed from behind me.

I turned around to where I think he was. “When you're blind and can't write on the lines maybe they will let you bring your $3000 laptop in to take notes with.” I turned back around and continued the start up of my computer.

“Greyson needs a way to take notes. His family has spent money on said laptop and it allows him to take notes and more. As long as it doesn't disrupt the class its allowed.” The teacher spoke to the kid particularly.

“I promise you sir, it wont be a disturbance.” I smiled and started looking for the plug in.

My computer has braille instead of normal keys. It also has voice commands and is able to copy down everything that is said in text form and read it back to me. Like I said, it's a expensive laptop.

“The plug-in is right here, Greyson.” The teacher took my hand and brought it to the power source. “If you need any help don't be afraid to ask.”

“Yes sir.” And with that I turned to my laptop and spoke, “Record audio to text.”

The machine spoke back, “Now recording audio to text.” And then the lesson started.

The class was awesome. Mr. Nelson was his name and he was great. He's a real jester and a great teacher. I hope more of my teachers are like him.
