Collection of Poetry - 11. Not Good Enough

Not Good Enough

You gave it your best shot
But your best wasn’t good enough
You said you tried your hardest
But that doesn’t cut it

I ask of you
Nothing less, nothing more
Than what I ask of myself:
Absolute perfection

So the next time you ‘do your best’
Make sure you succeed
Failure is failure – don’t sugarcoat it
‘Almost,’ ‘nearly,’ and ‘maybe next time’ aren’t good enough

If something is worth doing
It’s worth doing right
If you can’t do that,
Then don’t bother trying

Don’t come crying to me when Harvard turns you down
It’s not ‘bad luck’ – it means you didn’t make the cut
Don’t ask me for sympathy when you fail
You weren’t good enough

Without losers, there wouldn’t be winners
Is that harsh?
Maybe. But it’s true.
It is whether you win or lose that really matters

It’s time for you to pull yourself up
I won’t wait around for your mediocrity
I grow impatient of your average talents
Why shouldn’t I hold you to the same standard I hold myself?

I’m alone, and you are not
You take this as vindication
Don’t.
I am happier with myself than you will ever be with another

Genius leaves a legacy,
Love doesn’t
My abilities elevate me
And your so-called love can’t hide your imperfections
Stop bothering with excuses
You’re no longer my problem
You failed me
You simply aren’t good enough
