Collection of Poetry - 9. On Trust

On Trust

I was flustered, and Alex was suave
I had so much to say, but not enough courage
I tried to open up to him
But he just walked away

I want to love – without the loss
I want to trust – without opening up
I want to be kind – without being used
I want to relax – without letting down my guard

I was arrogant, and Bobby was accepting
He wanted to know me, but he couldn’t crack my shell
He tried to tell me he love me
But I just walked away

Arrogance keeps me safe
Austerity keeps me distant
Dispassion keeps me calm
Cynicism keeps me realistic

I was subservient, and Chris abused that
I didn’t want to rock the boat, but my burden was too great
I tried to make ‘us’ work
But he just walked away

Unconditional love doesn’t exist
Some things should not be shared
Humanity has no hope
Trust has no place in the world

I was haughty and aloof, and Dave loved me
He asked about my father, but I ignored those questions
He tried to show me compassion
But I just walked away

Trusting leads only to pain
Loving leads only to revenge
Giving leads to loss
Life leads only to oblivion

I was alone, and I hated myself
I wanted to be at peace, but I was too broken
I tried not to look into myself
But I had nowhere to run
