Shrunk to Fit - 3. Fear the Dark

A lantern's light...

How long have I got?

It lurks close by: a shape, waiting, panting, in the pitch black. The lantern splutters; dims, exhausted.

“Set me free, you bastards!”

It scents my fear: growling, inching ever closer.

“Help me!”

One last flicker… then utter darkness descends.

Have mercy, O Lord!

A smidge of horror, this was my first attempt at a tiny tale.

This is why the only horror movies I’ve seen were chosen by my friends! And why my favorite horror movies are really only semi-horror: An American Werewolf in London (horror/comedy) and Alien (horror/science fiction). I’m glad I’m reading this just after noon!

  🐔   I prefer my horror to be psychological - hints, distortions, delusions. I have no stomach for the slash and gore school of overkill.

This is the type of short piece that lets the reader's imagination run wild!

And I have to go to bed shortly! :)

Yes, indeed. That's the way I like my horror / weird tales. Hope you slept OK.

This left me with a sense of the desperation and fear that the character possibly felt, I like it but not the feelings it left me with. To get that across in so few words is brilliant.
