Shrunk to Fit - 4. Icarus

'The floor tasted like'...

Icarus soared skywards, seeking ambrosia. Freedom.

Nemesis inevitably followed such hubris.

He plummeted.

The floor tasted like wax, burnt feathers, broken dreams.

He wept.

A faraway voice soothed. “Don’t worry – it’s only a trip.”

The use of nemesis confounded me at first. Although I know the usage is correct, I wanted to put something in front of it. Pretty good story for 30+ words.

Yeah - I get that as well. You stare at something and it snags somehow. ;)  Glad you liked it.

Even I wouldn’t be cruel enough to mock Icarus with that last line!

Well, of course, it isn't actually Icarus; just someone who seeks to be him. ;)

Wow! Although you riffed off the Icarus story, it is amazing what you accomplished in thirty- some words! I love this! I am reluctant to show my ignorance in a public forum, but I am feeling like the first half is someone being compared to Icarus, and the second half is the someone himself. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. You are very kind. The opening changes, kind of, after you've read the rest. Essentially it is about someone's 'trip'.

A nice piece and I like the finish with a touch of humour.

Yes, the ending is mundane in a way, after all the ancient Greek allusions.

I’m sorry I didn’t get that. That's my literalness in action again. And explains why I thought the final line was mocking ‘Icarus.’
