My GA Writing Prompts - 6. Poetry Prompt - Tanka

Watching the sidewalk

Trudging, earbuds in, a girl

Walks alone to school

I drive past her, wondering

Does her bag hold her friends? Books.

Lovely clear picture and the juxtaposition of the punctuation really puts a swing on the meaning. I like it. Love the way you've slid each line over into the next.

Thanks, Jaro. The tanka form got blurred, probably, but the outcome was satisfactory.

Ahh, but the last line presumes that books are her friends . . . Maybe, she resents them because they take her away from her music. But still, the observed are bound by the prejudices and the desires of the viewer--at least in their own mind--and this puts us in sync with the "I" of the poet. There is no where else to go. Nice one, Percy.
