He just made big news when he died at 100 years old a week ago in neighboring Italy.
Erich Priebke, an SS officer, who participated in the execution of 335 Italians during WWII, as countermeasures against the ambush and killing of 33 German soldiers by Italian partisans. Hitler had ordered a 10 to 1 ratio for the killing of every German soldier. It turned out that the Germans had brought 5 extra people up to the Andeatine caves over Rome, whom Priebke decided to have executed as well, even though the required ratio had been met, evidence that he had been willing to go above and beyond any orders he was given. He escaped to Argentina after the war, and Argentina extradited him to Italy in 1995. He was initially found not guilty, by reason of following orders, but it was eventually overturned, and he was imprisoned, though at home, due to age and infirmity.
He had asked to be buried in Argentina, but Argentina refused, and meanwhile the Vatican forbid all Catholic churches to hold a funeral for him. Eventually he was buried by a catholic sect (?), and the occasion was marked by violence between anti-fascist and fascist groups.
