World War Z- What book?

Usually when you buy the rights to a book, you assume that the movie is going to be based on the book. Hollyweird is known for taking liberties but in this case they threw away the book and rewrote it.   The only thing that the two have in common are zombies, a mysterious plague that causes them and the United Nations. That's it.       Max Brooks originally wrote World War Z in the style of Studs Terkel's The Good War. It was a collection of stories told by the veterans of World War II.

National Insecurity

National InSecurity       In the last week a whistle-blower exposed embarrassing revelations about the NSA. The National Security Agency is so secret that many federal workers that saw references to the "NSA" were told in no uncertain terms that as far as they were concerned that stood for "No Such Agency".   NSA's bailiwick is an obscure branch of spook-dom called signals intelligence which has been around since people used to splice into telegraph lines and listen to the message traffi

James Savik's 10 tips for young men

After seeing an article that was embarrassingly and egregiously full of crap, I created a much more relevant 10 tips...       James Savik's 10 tips for young men   1. Pull up your pants so you don't look like a prison punk.   2. Know exactly what those Chinese characters mean before they become your tattoo. Unless you read and write Mandarin, you really wouldn't know the difference between "wisdom and strength" and "little bitch".   3. Know what to do in a fight. Kick balls or clock so

LA Woman- the Doors Last Album

The Doors released LA Woman in 1971. No one could have know that it would be their last album.   Some critics think that it may have been their best. New tick borne infections identified

One of the most nasty and difficult to treat persistent infections is Lyme Disease. It is caused by bacteria spread by the deer tick. There really no sense in running away. The damn things are everywhere.   the deer tick, geneus Ixodes   the "bull eye" pattern that appears soon after a tick bite that is common in lyme cases   Lyme disease is pretty nasty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyme_disease). It's not fatal but it is debilitating. For years doctors have wondered- why does lyme dise

mea culpa

I made a mistake. In a post, I used a racial pejorative. "White trash" may be accepted but it no less wrong to use than any other racist language. I apologize to anyone that I may have offended.

Gun Nuttery

I have learned that there is a significant difference in culture between the cities and the country.   In the country, we are raised around guns. We grow up hunting. A great many of us are veterans. Guns aren't an object of fear. They are simply another tool.   Locally there are two serious nuisance pests: wild hogs (wildpiginfo.msstate.edu) and nutria rat (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coypu). Wild hogs are dangerous and cause huge amounts of crop damage and kill and eat everything in the woods. Nu

Aramus Depot Irulan 350 System   The Aramus Depot orbited the third planet of the Irulan 350 star system. Like so many Alliance military facilities, it was an abandoned commercial concern. The big space station was originally a refinery and trans-shipment point for the minerals mined in this and the surrounding systems. When the mines were no longer commercially viable, the company had abandoned it. The Alliance Fleet took over the station when the war broke out. Now it was the graveyard of h

The Vermilion Cannery

The Vermilion Cannery     The storm started out modestly near the Cape Verde islands off the coast of East Africa.   The prevailing winds took it across the warm waters of the tropical Atlantic where it grew to become a category 3 hurricane but it was too late in the season. When Hurricane Mona entered the Gulf, instead of strengthening like they often do in August and September, it meandered through the cooler waters of October and November losing strength. It brushed Hati and Cuba and the

This weekend needs a do-over

No. I don't want to talk about it.   Baby killing assholes. Losing Roan. I wish I could have called this weekend off as a bad idea.   Times like this it's hard to be clean and sober.   If you've ever been in a fight and you've been hit a few times, you taste blood before it really hurts.   Now I'm going to crawl inside my headphones and listen to good music loud and tune out the world.   I know that I'll have to come up for air sooner or later. Now- I just want to tune it all out.

Scientists claim to have solved the 'evolutionary riddle of homosexuality'

The House

The House   I waited years for the house to sell. Even then, I had to act through an intermediary. If David's parent's had known that I wanted their old place, they would have burned it down rather than see me get it.   They were like that. They hated my guts. They blamed me for everything about David. They blamed me for turning him gay. They blamed me that he got wanderlust and caught HIV and of course they blamed me when he died. Hell, they didn't even allow me to attend the funeral after

fashion & fuunction

As I work on networks, I am often in tight places that aren't very nice. Think spiders, rats and claustrophobia. Crawling around in wiring closets and raceways is a bit like spelunking. In the summer the heat can be well above 100. You want to get in, get it done and get out before you die.   What you carry can make so much difference: too much is a nuisance. Not enough and you've got to make more trips. It's tricky to find just the right combination. I've tried lots of different solutions.

The system will return to equilibrium

In our ecology sometimes things get out of balance. Subtle things that you wouldn't notice might make a huge difference.   The populations of various types of species, most noticeably insects, can suddenly spike to many times its annual average.   Things as subtle as a five degree variation in temperature, an inch or two of rain one way or another or even a early or late frost can cause huge variations in different types of species.   These events are called population outbreaks and can ha

Outbreak - writing prompt 172

Outbreak     For eons the bat and the virus lived in harmony deep in the jungles of Brazil.   For eons the world of the virus lived harmlessly without infringing on the world of mankind.   There had been a few times when a fisherman would stray into a cave to escape storm clouds and get bitten. The way the damned stuff worked, the victim was suddenly too sick to make it out of the jungle. Months later they would be found with their skull on a makeshift pillow and their bony fingers clu

Sandy: Don't Panic.

It was inevitable of course.   The winds and floodwaters of Sandy have barely abated and the usual suspects are out in force scare-mongering.   CNN: Is Sandy a taste of things to come? :>> http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/31/us/sandy-climate-change/index.html   NYT: Did Global Warming Contribute to Sandy's Devastation? :>> http://green.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/10/30/did-global-warming-contribute-to-hurricane-sandys-devastation/   Since there have never been hurricanes before and they
