Socrates' Gad Fly

< LULZ     In any community of like minded people, there is a serious problem: they are LIKE-MINDED. Discussions invariably reach the same conclusions, the facts are all agreed upon and rarely challenged.   The danger involved is that such a once dynamic community faces a serious danger of becoming static. Anyone who has a dissenting view is an idiot. Dissent itself is discouraged and shunned.   The truth becomes lost somewhere in the sickly sweet goo of good intentions called politic

Tiger Poo Effective Pest Repellent

Study: Tiger Poo Effective Pest Repellent 03/10/2011 Source Link: Animal Planet Blog     Researchers in Australia have discovered that the smell of tiger feces is a great deterrent for crop-chewing creatures like goats and kangaroos. The idea is that the smell of a predator nearby will keep these animals away from certain plants.     A team of researchers at the University of Queensland in Australia spread tiger poo collected from zoos near the feeding troughs of goats and found it t

Tiger blood and other crack head horse shit

You can't turn on the TV or go on the tubes of the internets without running into the crackhead formerly known as Charlie Sheen.   After regaling us with tales of "socially" using crack and talking his way into getting fired from a shitty shit-com, he's now suing everybody in Hollywood not playing along.     I make no secret of being in recovery. In fact I help other addicts if I can. It's part of the 12 steps that Charlie THE CRACKHEAD is too good for.   To be perfectly honest, we dre

Oh my God, it's full of Trolls!

You don't really have to go this far to find them.   The Internets are full of trolls.     Even the nice kids are getting pissed.   This jackwagon gets around.

Why Westburo/Phelps Phails Miserably

Check it:   I Corinthians 13:   4Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.   8Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will

been a long time

I finished my first week of work in a permanent job this afternoon. It's been a long time since I knew where my next check was coming from.   Don't get me wrong. Contracts can be fun- if you can get enough work to survive. It's feast or famine and way too much famine.   I don't make the same hourly rate but I'll make much more over the long haul because of consistency. No weeks (or months *shudders*) in between.   It's so good to go home for the weekend and know the job will be there on Mo

Noise- Darin Bradley

Noise by Darin Bradley   This is one of the most timely and brilliantly conceived novels that I've read in a long time.   Timely because it doesn't take a great deal of imagination to know that there are big changes coming. Whether our society is elastic enough or will break under the pressure is an open question.   Brilliant from a writers perspective because the author uses his words like an artist uses a dry brush to get just the right color.   Given the shape of the world today, wh

Big Time Win

I'm FINALLY back in the big time.   All of those certifications that I earned have finally paid off.   I start Monday as the Systems Administrator for a mid size law firm.   After years of working contracts, I've got a REAL job again.   Not to worry. I will continue to write.   I have a new story coming out for the Spring Anthology that I think will be pretty good according to my beta readers.   That story has me developing another several stories set in the seventies. I've dusted of

What hell looks like

My cousin was diagnosed with terminal cancer last summer. We have tried to keep in touch as best we could but we got word last night that it was only a matter of hours.   I drove my Mom to Pascagoula, MS this morning and arrived at the hospice where my cousin is staying for her last days.   As soon as I entered the place it was like stepping into hell. There were people in various stages of excruciating death in every room. The first sound I heard was a man screaming for morphine.   It tur

My new meme

Everybody seems to have a meme these days.   After lots of coffee, doughnuts and revolting research into pop culture, I have come up with mine.   Here it is:   This XXXX business will get out of control! It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it!   It come from the Hunt for Red October. The US carrier group is emperiled by the proximity of Soviet naval vessels and aircraft. The Admiral utters this line.   Now for use on the internets, I use it a little differen

Heresy

When you take a dump on something holy, when you ruin something sacred, when you make a joke of a song so beloved- that's heresy.   Look- I never heard of Fergie before the half time superbowl show. I hope I never hear of that skank ever again. What she did to GNR's masterpiece Sweet Child of Mine was a crime against art.   No body seems to give a f**k about offending our culture. They call us trailer trash. They make fun of our mullets. f**k'em. I got no use for their half assed bullshit. T

the Place In Between

Coming soon for the Spring Anthology:   the Place In Between   It’s never a destination. It’s a place in between tedium and suburbia. It is an impulse turn off of the daily routine; a guilty pleasure that you can feel guilty about after you feel the rush of the forbidden.

My Addition to Wolfram Alpha

A while back I was asked to comment on Wolfram Alpha. See what's there. See what I like. See if anything is missing.   Never missing an opportunity to comment on anything, qualified or not, I said:     For those who don't know or care what a bloody Green's function is, check this. It will build character.     Green's Function, formal definition   Well- today this was added to Wolfram-Alpha's data bank:       My pleasure. I admire old George Green. Anyone who drops out of se

Best Classic Rock Station Ever

Because I'm old enough to remember when the oldies were new.   From Memphis, TN: home of Elvis and great Barbecue, I give you WEGR-FM 102.7 Rock 103.   I discovered it in Memphis this week and took them home in the handy streaming audio.   This is the email I sent them:     Driving home on I-55, I could hear them all the way to Grenada and they played: Pink Floyd, ELP, Journey, Boston, Styx, Aerosmith, Foreigner. Hell- I didn't even think radio stations had albums anymore.   Listen i

10 towns, 5 days, 7 1/2 grand

This has been my single best week ever.   I won a contract from a big company to roll out a change to their network statewide and replace old network hardware.   It all had to take place in one week. Ten sites, state wide. No excuses. Get her done.   That's what I did this week. ALL WEEK. ROAD WARRIOR!   < now with 35% less kRaZy   I have been all over the state. Top to bottom. From the Suburbs of Memphis to the Gulf Coast. Vicksburg in the West to Meridian in the East.   I got i

Story Recommendation- Second Variety

From time to time I come across a story that hits me particularly hard.   Second Variety by Philip K Dick is one of those stories.   It's about the war that my generation only fought in our nightmares.   Check it out. It's a real scream. Buh-wa-hahahah.

From: Are North Koreans using Bioterrorism?

Foot and mouth disease outbreak in South Korea 28. Have a little patience

I know. Construction is a pain in the ass.   Potholes,     Detours,     Traffic Jams...     It's all a huge pain in the ass.     It's enough to make you want to drink, drive and run over Lassie.     Or even take a different exit that doesn't even go where you want to be.     I suggest that we all mellow out, have some patience and let the process proceed.     Because we all know. It's not the traffic, the construction or the delays that make us crazy.   It

Best Christmas Ever!

I left Jackson, MS last Tuesday at 2:00 and drove the eight hours to Dallas on I-20. It's a fairly boring drive. The only points of interest are Monroe, LA which smells like a wretched fart that never dissipates because of the paper mills and Shreveport which you by-pass if you are smart. There is Marshall, Longview and Teryl Texas but... the prize is Dallas. Stopped for a burger and a shake in Canton, TX at the Dairy Palace. It's a little pricy but the food is good and its not one of those cook

Zombie Apocalypse tonight...

Tonight a rare astronomical alignment that has not occurred in centuries will appear in our skies.   Tonight is the winter solstice, a lunar eclipse and a blood moon.     It is thought that this rare astronomical convergence will trigger a Zombie Apocalypse.   In the event of a zombie apocalypse, don't get depressed. It's your big chance to smack your obnoxious neighbors in the face with a shovel.   Use weapons that are as silent as possible as noise attracts zombies. Inflict as much
