That Guy

Time for a confession. As often as I do it, you would think I was a bloody Catholic. :P

One of the biggest issues I had coming to terms with being gay was, in my time, that excluded you from ever being a dad.

Sure- things are changing on that front. If I had the cash, I could adopt but I don't and I'm getting to old for it.

So if you wonder why I am the way I am with the younglings, that's it.

I may not ever be a dad, but if I can be that guy that tells you that you have value when you feel worthless or gives you hope when you feel hopeless, that gives me meaning.

That's who I am and, I'm pleased to be that guy. Somebody has to be and it might as well be me.

I've never wondered, because I agree--someone needs to do it and it seems to me you do a good job. Maybe you should talk to someone about fostering :)

I am blessed beyond measure in my son ... and yet, I too have always been someone the younglings could come to. They know when I say "youngling" it is an endearment, that I see them as equals, as people ... you and I, we are the "dutch uncles" to those around us.

I have become the "Other Mother" to many of my daughter's friends, and even a couple people here. More power to you James, may you help many more "younglings" with your sound advice! Perhaps Irri is right - there are many mentoring programs out there and the foster system is always looking for good homes.

Being in the same boat as you James, I tend to act similarly. I consider any kid that needs help as my personal responsibility if they aren't getting the help they need. They all become my kids in a way.
