God or the Girl- GMAFB!

Ok the latest hoop of reality-show cheese to be rolled our way is a huge, reeking pile of crap called God or the Girl. In it, several young men try to decide on whether or not to enter the priesthood.

Can you say very sad closet cases boys and girls?

The Catholic Church, and Christianity in general, has been playing this idiotic head game with gay people for millinia. AND they have the NERVE to be surprised when the immature, sexually confused people that they bring on to be priests years later turn out to be really F**ked up??

Why would anyone want to be a part of a religion that is more than happy to forgive murders, thieves and rapists but someone being gay and honest about it is a deal breaker?

Religion is the biggest con game in the history of the world. It's rather brilliant if you think about it. Somewhere up in the sky is this omnipotent being that controls the universe but he is apparently a codependent bitch that needs to control your life on a micro level and can't handle money. He wants to be worshiped by beings of much less significance than ants in the grand scheme of the universe, constantly needs money but HE LOVES YOU as long as you aren't GAY! OH- and if you ask for proof, you are told that you are too small and insignificant to possibly understand.

So- we get to watch 5 little brain-washed closet-queens vie for the position of alter-boy fondler on A&E????

It is ridiculous, nauseating, vulgar, contemptible, vile, repulsive, idiotic, ignorant, immoral, incomprehensible and... just fine since it is done in the name of religion.

Pardon me while I run off and puke.

This reminds me of why I don't own a TV anymore. :P

Also reminds me of the old saying, God didn't make man in his image, it was the other way around. Man made God in his (man's) image.

Hi James :)

Why would anyone want to be a part of a religion that is more than happy to forgive murders, thieves and rapists but someone being gay and honest about it is a deal breaker?

well that isn't exactly the doctrine. I believe it's something like there's a problem if you're actively killing, stealing, or sleeping with guys, but once you "repent" it's all good. But yes, I do believe it might be different now that the new Pope is office. I did hear something about the "witch hunt" he's conducting, but formerly I think the position was that you just weren't supposed to keep doing it.

I readily admit that religion is responsible for a HUGE amount of the negative attitudes toward homosexuality, as well as screwing with the heads of gay believers. But I think faith is something which ought to be more personal. I pick and choose exactly what I believe and what I don't; I don't need any church leaders to tell me what I believe. I continue to identify with Catholicism because I do hold to quite a few of the major beliefs and because it wouldn't really matter which religion I held affiliation with; I'd just continue to do my own thing anyway. Besides in my region of the country/state gay Catholics have an easier time of it, and less issues, than gay protestants.

I'm not trying to dispute your claims, the way the religion is carried often comes across in the manner you described. However, I don't doubt for a minute that if gay-sympathetic people ever came to power they could reorganize it in such a way that would be much more accepting. Anyway I guess you can't even call me a "Catholic" as undoubtedly if I ever had a theological discussion with the Pope (or even the previous Pope) I'd be excommunicated, but my weird, eclectic blend of beliefs does work for me :) , and I have no religious issues with homosexuality ;) .

As for your evaluation of the reality show I'd say it's dead on. It does sound rather disgusting and in poor taste; however, that's pretty much my opinion of all the reality shows I've seen (the number of which I've thankfully managed to keep to a bare minimum).

Anyway take care and have an awesome day! :D:hug:

I have a distinct recollection of a quote from Mark Twain that goes something like: "God made man in his own image, and man, being a gentleman, returned the favor." However, I haven't been able to find a reference to it. Any help?

I don't think it was Twain, though he may have quoted it.

If you don't know Twain's Letters from the Earth and if you're interested in a satirical view of religion, I suggest you might like it.

I like this one from Anne LaMott, on the site you linked to:

You can safely assume that you've created God in your own image when it turns out that God hates all the same people you do. ~Anne Lamott
